For people confused as how night owls do it: It’s just at night, we tend to be more relaxed and creative because our daily duties are done. Once our jobs and works are over, we have a sense of comfort and motivation to do all sorts of things since now we have “free time”. Alongside the fact that, at night most people are asleep and we have the “night to ourselves”. It’s quiet, peaceful, and comforting. Doing homework/jobs, cleaning, listening to music, doing art, it just hits different. Plus: 2am thoughts do be wildin so it’s an experience HAHAHA Reply about why you like working better at night down below to see what else i missed, this is personally from my experience

I'm definitely a night owl. I don't like going to bed early, and by staying up late, I feel like I can get more time to myself. When it's later at night, I'm less likely to be pestered by emails and more likely to have the kitchen to myself. And there were times when I really wanted to finish (or at least make significant progress in) a project, before going to sleep. I can wake up early, when I have to get ready for something specific, but I tend to get sleepy later on in the day.

Throughout all of high school I would regularly go to bed around 1-2am and wake up around 5am to get to my first class at 6am. I hated sleeping with a passion for a lot of my adolescence, I wouldn't even take naps, I also never drank coffee or energy drinks, but I somehow still had the energy to get through the day. I can't function with a sleep schedule like that anymore, but I'm still not able to take naps, even if I try to, not matter how tired I feel.

I'm kind of atypical, I'm a hobbyist artist but I'm an early riser, although I'm so much of an early riser that I might as well be a night owl, haha. I wake up for the day at 3 AM so there's a lot of overlap between my "work on art and other fun stuff" times (about 4 AM to 6 AM most mornings) and times night owls use, except mine's at the beginning of my day. I live in a tiny rural village where everything closes at 8 PM so amazingly, my social life is unharmed by my weird schedule. It's cool I think that extreme early risers and extreme night owls actually have lots of common ground.

100% a night owl. I can wake up early, but I have to plan it. Let me do my thing until 2 am and you'll get me at my best. That's what I love most about my flex hours. I have gotten remarks about me doing stuff at night, but as long as I do my job it's not an issue.

Im the same I usually stay up till like 5 or 6am, and usually my natural clock wakes me up at 11am no matter how much sleep I get. I can wake up earlier if I have to, but if I get woken up early without warning I get really bitchy. My roommate learned the hard way if she's going to wake me up early at least bring my a donut or something as a sacrificial offering. Otherwise I'll either purpose sleep through her attempts or I get snappy and will either cry in frustration or fight someone 🤷😂

I'm a night owl and a music producer. I do agree that we, night owls, feel more creative at night. But personally, I feel more relaxed at night since it is quiet and nighttime is colder and it makes me more focused on what I want and need to do. Although being a night owl has disadvantages like most shops are closed at night so I sometimes need to wake up earlier in order to buy stuffs outside or some people I work with are morning larks so I sometimes don't get sleep at all. At first, I thought it was a bad thing being a night owl but as my life goes on, I realized that I can live my life at the fullest even being a night owl.

@@stephanietang3716 this is really relatable. I’m a night owl. Miss most of the morning, usually waking up around 1-3pm. Night is the time to let my mind run free, and the latest I ever go to sleep is 7am. Assuming I can sleep, which can be a problem as a night owl. Sometimes your body just has too much energy reserved from how late you wake up that you end up going a day without sleep. That’s really the only drawback I’ve experienced. I do want a more productive sleep schedule, since with how late I wake up it gives little time to get things done that my night time usually gets cramped with things to do. I’m not a morning person, but I at least want to be in bed by 1am and up by 1pm. That’s a goal, and if I can keep that consistency I will be more productive with my time.

I’m definitely a night owl, but there are what I call “early bird cycles” where I find myself sleeping at or before midnight and/or sleeping late and waking up early. Idk what causes these. They aren’t regular either, but they just happen occasionally and only last up to a week. As a night owl artist, I am more creative around 22:00 (10PM) and knowing there is less activity at night gives my mind a little more peace. Not having to worry about guests and awkward moments around strangers; however, I do get anxiety at night b/c of the risk of robberies and murders. No matter how “safe” a place is, chances are slim for where I live, but they are never zero. playing music or listening to commentary while I draw helps me focus on getting art done.

I was also the only one chose to get to work at 9am. Every year I used most of my benefit time for being late to work. I am retired since July. My body can’t be happier to follow its bio clock.

Hello there. I’m a night owl by accident after 5 years of poor sleep habits and staying up later and later. I now usually fall asleep around 3AM to 5AM and wake up between 11AM and 2PM. It certainly helps that at my last few jobs I’m ALWAYS the evening shift cuz no one else can or wants to work closing shifts. Which is great for me cuz I get to sleep until 1PM and chill before work a bit.

I lovingly call myself a midday pigeon 😂 I like waking up later, and am very energized 1-2 hours post wake up, get super tired around 3 and 7pm, reenergized by 8pm, and want to be home chilling by 9pm. I go gremlin if kept up past 2am and wont sleep until 6 or 7am if kept up. I *did* notice that 4am wake up felt really good though, but maybe that was because my dog always wanted a 4am walk and we would go see the sunrise every morning lol My sleep ritual also takes 3 hours, so I start that at whatever time will give me 8 hours with a 1-2 hour insomnia buffer I've suffered from debilitating insomnia for most of my life, so sleep has become part science for me 😅🙃

@@cantin8697 it makes sense, my more extroverted friends tend to be up pretty early and enjoy socializing with lots of people throughout the day, while myself and the other introverts I know tend to be night owls and we tend to enjoy not having to have to interact with people and having time to our selves.

@@cantin8697 if you are more easily able to attend events or meet people because the rest of the world is "forcibly" pushed into a morning lark routine than it only creates more trouble for night owl type people to meet. There are not a slew of midnight coffee shops or bookstores, shopping centers close around 9pm, movie theaters too. This means that you are fighting both the social norm as well as a lack of ability to function on your own and have places to go to outside the social 9-5, leaving night owls to isolate after about 9pm every day. Once you get into a routine of self isolation then socialization becomes more difficult as you are not practicing it daily. Two pronged problem :) The world really should run in a split lifestyle, would be quite interesting to see this happen, more ultraviolet lights after 9pm, more businesses to have day and night shifts (I am talking big businesses, ones that normally only have a 9-5). Until that social support exists night owls will be more apt to learn self isolation.

For me it differs. It definitely depends on stress and other factors(like what exactly am I expected to do either that day/week/month) but most of the time, I go to bed either at 10pm 12am or 2 am. Then I’d either wake up at 3am(mainly because of an alarm if I needed to do something really important),6am, or 9am. The sleep times correlate to the wake times. I normally go to bed at 10 if I’m wanting to get up at 3, same for 16, I go to bed at 12, and I don’t ever want to get up at 9 but that happens on days off usually when I want to get up at 6 but don’t because I’m still tired. I normally stay up til 12-2 on the nights before a day off because I know I can risk not getting up at 6. All in all. I sleep like this because I just can’t bring my self to do homework. But, if I wake up at 3(and if I even get up) I need to start working or else imma fail. This was working for some time and I implemented it because of my adhd not allowing me to focus on anything and me not having the will power to work. TLDR:school fucked me up man.

Night owl here. Used to play guitar till I slept back in high school. This semester is the closest I've been to a morning person for a while, and I usually fall asleep around 12-2 (as opposed to 3-4:30 from prior semesters). Nights are quiet and alone, and since I'm very sociable and distractable I prefer to socialize when everyone is up and about, and work when they're asleep. I like mornings, but they come to an end quickly and are hard to catch. I miss them but I'm not a functional morning person.

My schedule forces me to be work with coworkers from 9am to 4 pm. Most of my coworkers only do day-time work and always like to have a laugh when I show up lethargic. "good morning sleepy" they cheerfully say as I respond with my deep crackling voice. However, when graveyard shifts (9pm to 6am) happen, I always volunteer along one work mate, and we always have a good time talking philosophy until the sun rises. NO larker EVER wants to do it (been at my work for 10+years). No matter the work, we always enjoy those times. That's when, I feel, most introverts would benefit socially if they all took up graveyard shifts. We'd all benefit socially then. Then, the larks come out happy and we go to sleep happy because we could work on our own time.

Next thing I know I'm blabbing on about one of the things that's got me down to my friend. It's not like my friends aren't night owls too, it's just that they actually have lives outside of gaming, they go outside and do things (even if some of them don't want to) and some even have a SO. They end up going to bed much earlier then I do (around 12-3am) and I just sit there and try and find out what I'm gonna do since I'm not tired and don't have any sleep meds, so I cant sleep until I'm tired.

I'm a night owl, and I get that the quiet nighttime is when your mind wanders (usually to the bad directions) especially when you are depressed. Since I'm not tied to any work schedule, the way I did it was to simply have fun whenever I'm depressed. Be it at 1 am in the morning or 3 am, just get up from bed and play some games, watch a movie, read a book, whatever your hobby is. Fatigue will naturally set in your body and that's a good time to fall asleep. I know this advice might not work on everyone especially if you're working in the morning, but you can try it out during weekends or holidays, or even by taking a paid leave if necessary.

Oh i am absolutely 100% a nightowl. What isn't covered in this video are Circadian Disorders such as Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder. DSPD is mostly genetic, though it is still being studied, and sadly, very much not a choice for those who suffer ): In short, DSPD is like permanent jet lag, your brain does not start producing many of the chemicals required for sleep until much much later in the evening (this has a huge affect on the orexin system, as well as your digestive system!) Many people with DSPD are forced into an earlier schedule due to societal norms and requirements - this is always a recipe for a slow moving disaster because it means we often move about our world unhappy and exhausted. It also means that health wise, we're prone to being overweight, and at a much higher risk for diseases such as diabetes. Worst of all, though, is that DSPD cannot be cured. Light therapy, sleep hygiene, antidepressants, everything under the sun only give temporary relief, but one evening of going to bed 30 minutes later causes a reset of a process that takes sometimes over a year to solidify - it is the most rigid and unyielding of circadian rhythms, and we can't even go to sleep when we're exhausted unless it's a certain time. This does make those with DSPD at risk for falling into Freerunning disorder, or non-24 hour circadian rhythms where our biochemical 'day' can be anywhere between 26 and 48 hours long which is a much more severe circadian disorder. However, when we're able to live by our natural clocks we're happy, creative and healthy - it just rarely works out that way! That being said, us biological night owls were probably the ancient watchers of the fire at night, when the majority of the tribe slept, we kept them safe from ambushes, attacks from animals, and kept the fire going. We just don't have that use or recognition of importance anymore ): I will say though that I am EXTREMELY excited for the research into orexin antagonists going on - it's a whole new world for us, and there might be hope in a year or two! for a more socially acceptable schedule.

I'm a total night owl. I literally hate being out during the day. I hate the hustle and bustle of everything going on during the day. At night, I feel far less anxious, so, more calm, focused and undisturbed. This compliments my INFJ personality. The downside of this, for me, is that I still have to find ways of operating during daytime hours. Most businesses are open during the day and things like Dr appointments have to be taken care of during daylight hours not to mention being around extended family. I also don't want to be doing things like grocery shopping too late at night because, well, there are crazy people out there and a lot of crime happens under the cover of night. Being a night owl comes with challenges but I've always leaned more towards a nighttime lifestyle and it may even be rooted in the fact that as a child, both my parents worked graveyard shifts. At least my years of moon light have saved me from the ravages of the sun. I am constantly told that I look far younger than I actually am. Find the positives where you can!

But also ironically I am very artistic and some of my best paintings and written chapters for my books has happened in the middle of the night so I'm always very conflicted about my sleep schedule but I've noticed that my sleep schedule when I'm very calm and happy can fluctuate with what project I'm working on because some of my really beautiful earthy paintings wanna be painted in morning light wear some of my stories and chapters want to be discovered in the dark of the night.

Some observations about environmental factors, from a morning lark: - sunlight plays a big role on my brain being awake, I've noticed that I'm most active during the summer (even though it's always hot) because there's so much daylight - during the winter, or on gloomy/rainy days in general, I feel like I fit the woodcock type more.. it's hard to get out of bed and it's hard to focus and work with artificial light - when I was in Japan during a summer vacation, the sun rose suuuper early, like at 4/5 am, and I've never been awake around that time! but I found it so easy to wake up and go about my business because konbini are open 24/7 and I could just get a quick breakfast and take a walk until tourist attractions opened up - about Japan still, even though I walked/took public transport a lot, I found myself rarely out of energy! and after the sun set, it was easy to fall asleep, whereas back home I always have trouble sleeping early - still about Japan! my sister who lives there did tell me that people in general tend to live a bit early than in our country, as in they have lunch by 12pm and dinner at about 6pm? idk if it's different anywhere else, but that's super early for me, could it have anything to do with the daylight again?

I have two phases that switch quite randomly. They can switch in days or months. First is Insomniac - I sleep max 3-5 hours a day, sometimes even less. Few times I couldn't fall asleep for 2-3 days and then slept for whole day 😅 But otherwise I function relatively normally Second is Hybernation - I'm able to sleep even up to 16-18 hours a day and feel always sleepy, still am able to function if I don't have busy schedule.. I've had it like this since elementary school, now I'm in college.. ppl are always horrified, when I tell them about my sleep schedule 🥲

I’m definitely a night owl type as I tend to stay up late like 2am on work days but on days off then maybe longer at night. As I have a hard time getting up in the mid morning and get going for work. Thanks for your video.

I love you guys so much, and even though you have heavy topics, you have light fun ones like these. I feel like im in between. I can wake up and am ready to go and out the door by 7:00am if I NEED to, but I wont be happy about it till at least 9: 30 -10:30 AM And thats w/o caffeine. I often need a shot of energy at some point in the day if I go that long. Like say I know im going to be up for a long period of time, from like 7am-6PM. I will often have an energy drink (Ghost or Alani---they´re sugar free and don't taste bad) But if i know im going to be by myself at home all day, I will try my best to sleep in as much as possible. Lately that looks like around 10:00am-10:30am (Depending on the day) I dont know what late vs early is either i just have always had the ¨super power¨ of waking up with out an alarm clock and just out the door in over a half hr to an hr depending on whos taking me (yep being crippled by anxiety stinks)

Thank you for your videos and hospitality it helps a lot .I just like your channel a lot that I feel like it's the only thing that relate to me so much more than my family, well you see I have been suffering with anxiety + Insomnia from so long even though I am still a teenager and .... it's been 7 months since I normally interacted with people outside ....I just don't know what's wrong but I've been growing more and more ..uhh weird each passing day and I don't have any idea what's going on with me, seems my parents are far from understanding .After watching your videos I've learned about mental health and stuff a little but still couldn't figure out what's my problem is....

I'm a mixture of early bird and night owl. Used to be the latter but the older I get the easier it is to wake up early 😊 But there is no consistant schedule sometimes I can go to bed at 9:30pm and sometimes 1:30am but lately (for the past 6-8 months I'd say) it is usually between 10:30pm - midnight. Then sleep 4-9 hours depending of many things so there is a lot of variety 🙂

I often listen to music during day and night while commuting to school or behind my desk in my room. It tends to be that the night is much more quiet so, I'm able to concentrate more on that one thing(ex. the music) as there aren't much interruptions in information which are much more frequent in the day. Ig this is also why I really don't like it when my parents wake up in the middle of the night and come to my room for some reason. Just too much interruption there.

I love sleep bc it's my way of escape and rest in reality but it's also something I struggle with and waking up early and for me, my sleep sched does describe my mental health, my relationships, and everyday lifestyle I tend to feel pressured when i don't wake up early which ends up with me getting scolded and being a dissapointment bc i can't do this "basic" task but they don't know how maybe i despise mornings or i don't really have anything to do, rathen than being a night owl i feel free, quiet, and productive and staying up all night is fun just catching up on things that i know i can't do in my mornings but even my shitty sleep sched get worse or better I'll thank myself for having the courage to get out of bed and still do things like eating and daily hygiene but damn i wish i was a morning person it fits the life that me and family have.. thank u for this video and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year take care slay 🎄💗

I switch a lot between schedules, but when I switch I keep it for good 2/3 months. But I did an experiment in the summer vacation 2 years in a row, and I noticed I'm fully awake and productive between 7pm and 11 am. I feel well rested and are able to wake up easier at 7pm, but I can't use that schedule in an average day life. So I try to be productive in the morning, drag myself in the middle of the day, and be productive again in the evening! Luckily my classes are in the middle of the day, so I won't use alit of energy then.

@@itsjesshere14p58a night owl here, but the most SIMPLE tip is having a routine. Sleep at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. Your body will adjust your circadian rhythm to that sleep schedule. Make sure you eat healthy, have balanced meals (that means adjusting your meals, so you don’t become deficient and/or accumulate toxicity due to over-consuming one or more vitamins). Just make sure you are getting the right AMOUNT OF daily nutrients (note down daily nutrients and review it weekly)

And being a night owl/late sleeper that’s also productive in the morning is super annoying, because my sleep schedule is literally in the middle of the time I’m most productive 😓 I have to drag myself out of bed, extremely tired and try to get things done. But when I can’t get myself out of bed I miss that productive window and the rest of the day is just unmotivated, tired laziness

Great video! A follow-up about sentinel theory would be cool. It's how I internally rationalize my... hmm, nonstandard sleep habits. So it'd be good to know if the consensus is that it's bunk. Also, my take on this video will be maximally influenced by confirmation bias, but as a full night owl I feel unreasonably vindicated watching this. It is so hard to be a night owl in society. Capable people should not be defined by whether they default to waking up before 6am... This is a uselessly small sample size, but I work at NASA, and basically everyone in my group has a phd, and we're almost all night owls. And also, most of my friends in grad school were also night owls (though maybe that's because it's easier for me to be friends with other night owls? Idk). So it's always annoyed me that industry and govt and really just society in general so completely cater to larks. Also, also: the narrators voice in this video is outstanding. Something about it reminds me of the AI Samantha from the movie Her.

I'm a night owl for sure. though maybe a woodcock right now because I havent been able to adjust to the "normal" early bird schedule that I've been living for like 6 months now. I like being able to wake up naturally an laze around for a bit before starting to work and do things. I know that in order for me to have the most productive work day, I should wake up a 5 so I can get in my work out, dog walk, shower, and breakfast. I just cannot force myself to do that for more than 3 days in a row. I know that I should go to bed at like 10, but lately ive been tossing and turning until 4am or just get hyperfocused into something and all of a sudden its 2 am. The time change and it being too dark to walk my dog through the park after work is really ruining me too, as i didn't feel bad if I slept in, knowing that I could still take the 2 mile walk after work, but now I don't feel safe doing that.

Hey, Psych2Go! I'm a new subscriber, these past few months, I've been feeling like I'm not hungry, I feeling like I have a lot of stress, I would force myself to finish my assignments before school ends, even I know that I can do it at home, not really sure why I would do this, and if I'm not able to finish it before school ends, I would kind of start panicking, feeling very stressed. Sometimes, I would feel like I'm always peoples' second choices, I would feel that I'm nothing, sometimes I would just be happy thinking nothing could go wrong. Most of the times, I would feel like I'm not tired, I would sleep very late at night and sleep till around 10-11am, or I would sleep at 10pm and also wake up at 10-11am. No, I don't lose interest in the things I would do in the past. But I feel like I'm a very sensitive person, a person that can't really control my emotions. I know this is a very long comment, but I would like to ask, *Is it just me or is my mental health getting worse? Or do I have anxiety or depression?* I'm sorry for this long comment, I don't really know if you know if I have depression or anything, but if you could give me an answer, or at least let me know if something's wrong, I would really appreciate it, thank you, hope you have a nice day! ❤🙏

I am both an early bird and a night owl! I think around my teen years I started to want to sleep in more, but I have a big family and share my room so... yeah, never really got used to sleeping in😅 I will say that my environment usually dictates how my sleep affects my mood. Like, during a hard time I'll have those restless nights occasionally, but what usually happens is my sleep schedule won't change, but I'll wake up feeling gross and tired. I'm happy to say that I'm doing really great now, and have a healthy, consistent sleep schedule😁 thanks P2G!

As a highschool student and night owl, I usually go to bed at 1-2am and wake up at 6:30am to get ready for school. Because of where I live I’m not close to school so I have to wake up almost 3 hours earlier before school actually starts. My days are long and sometimes if I really overexert myself I’ll pass out and sleep from 5pm to 9pm or 9pm to 2-3 am, it all just depends. I’ve always been a night owl and I’m most comfortable when I’m alone in my room at 2 am doing nothing in particular. I would also definitely consider myself a creative person and an artist. I like to be alone whenever I have the chance, especially when I’m at home so I tend to stay up late so I can feel at peace by myself. On weekends I’ll stay up even later till 5am and then sleep till 5pm. But I actually don’t like waking up that late. I don’t mind sleeping in till 3pm, but 4pm or later just makes me feel gross, but sometimes my body can’t help it. I do wish I could change my sleep schedule on weekdays for school but I love being awake in the night and it doesn’t really affect me all that much. Sometimes when my mental health isn’t doing the best my sleep schedule can really mess with me, but I’ve been doing alright recently.
