Not in PR, but I am in the legal field. One of the reasons a lawyer will tell you not to apologize is because you are opening yourself to legal liability. If you get sued, you have a public admission of guilt. If you must apologize, lawyers will tell you to keep it brief and vague so you can wiggle out of specifics in Court.

Her describing her transgressions as “immature and inappropriate” really minimizes the extent of her creepiness. For those who don’t know, here some of the standouts that come to mind: 1. She sent sexually explicit images of Trisha Paytas to children in order to mock her body while pretending to be her friend. 2. Had group chats with her minor fans where she’d ask them sexual questions and shared details about her sex life, including things like the size of the genitals of both her former and current husband. 3. She message fans outside the group chats to create divide, flatter the kids and convince them that *they* were her favorites. 4. Use that very influence to send the kids to harass one of her inner circle fans off the internet once he exposed some of the things she did. 5. Allow for her predator brother to have access to the children in her fan base. This might be on her whole family, since apparently everyone knew he has “issues” with staying away from kids. There are messages where he explicitly asks one of Colleen’s fans their age and continues to flirt after the kid says they’re 13-14. And that is just some of what I remember off the top of my head

Exactly 🤣 Also, calling the facts of the matter "accusations"? What a slap in the face 😬 She also used the "many years ago" sentiment when the truth is that she left the Instagram Weenies chat A FEW MONTHS AGO. How four years of grooming followed by a hate campaign that continues to this day is "not thinking carefully enough" I do not know. She thought VERY carefully indeed. Why else would she have encouraged the children to create burner accounts to talk to her on once parents started monitoring their socials more closely, or indicated potential mistrust of her?

That "apology" was absolutely horrible. She's minimizing the things she did, and also making it sound like it was ages ago which isn't true. One of the things she did was sending nude pictures of a sex worker (who is also her friend..!) to minors. That's disgusting in so many levels. This was a very PR-handbook apology; don't get into details because then it's definitely out there, don't admit it (say "i was accused of xyz"), mention therapy and/or your own mental health and taking a break, minimize the transgressions, emphasize things being in the PAST, say "i'm not a perfect person", and most importantly *_be vague_* .

Dr. Honda, I love your content. I'm a big fan of the channel. I'm honestly disappointed in this video. Not only in content, but in tone. I've never felt like you're talking down to us mere internet mortals, but I did today. Please dig into this story more. Colleen isolated specific individuals into group chats and told them they were "special". She openly started conversations with these minors about explicit content, asking for them to elaborate on their own sexual experiences and discussing her ex husband's genitals. Adam was hired as an unpaid intern after building a relationship over time where he was told he was "special" "talented" "different" and continually brought pressing issues to Adam about her divorce and sex life when Adam was just a younger teen. She used her group chats of the "special" fans, and had them carry out specific tasks for her on the internet like harassing her ex husband and anyone who disagreed with her online via social media. She sent nudes of another content creator that were behind a paywall unsolicited to people (and allegedly a minor). She asked Adam for pictures of his butt. The idea that this is just a matter of underwear, is NOT a fair representation of the situation. Everything I mentioned above has been heavily documented and all sources have been verified down to the metadata of screenshots. Please reconsider your perspective on this. I don't usually call anyone out on the internet, but it is harmful, as a therapist, to subtly hint that legitimate grooming tactics are not actually grooming. This isn't just "internet hype" and I did not get the feeling you understand that based on your response in this video.

Dr Honda, I was hoping you would critique this apology. As someone who was a former fan of Colleen Ballinger for many years (as an adult), I feel reading a Reddit review isn’t very good preparation as this situation is so nuanced. Many were expecting to hear from Colleen about now as if she had not posted soon she would have become demonetize on KZbin. Also now with the holidays as you know KZbinrs make their most money due to advertising for the holidays so the timing does not strike me as a sincere apology. Also for years now her victims had asked for a private apology and they said they would drop the subject and not mention her again. This didn’t happen in the past and again in this video her mea culpa is vague with as you said no real example of what she is apologetic for. The attorney she hired to deal with the allegations levied against her is an attorney that takes on some of the worst clientele (Prince Andrew, Arnie Hammer to name a few). Make no doubt his office and a PR team approved and created this video for Colleen to have no culpability and leave her open for criminal investigation or being sued. In your accounts of what she was guilty of or what made people mad you left out the most serious. She shared on a group chat with minors pornography from Only Fans of a fellow KZbinr she had let believe was her friend. This is not only a Federal offense because it went across state lines, it went across country lines and can result in imprisonment for CP. Her victims have saved all their correspondence with Colleen Ballinger and have disproven the false narrative she tried to pass with editing she released trying to show herself as innocent. I was very disappointed when I saw all these KZbinrs giving their evidence of how different Colleen Ballinger is in her public life (goodie goodie mom and comedian) versus the mean girl (woman) she seems to be in her private life. From observing her videos for many years she had seemed to regret growing up in a family with a very tight income in a very affluent community ( Santa Barbara) so I feel in my opinion she is very driven by money and fame at all cost (her ex husband also stated this but for all fairness let’s call him biased) and this video is just another example of how she is trying to preserve her personal wealth instead of being truly apologetic. Sorry this comment is so long, I just felt you were missing some of her motivations for doing this non-apology and the timing of it.

Hi Dr. Honda, I love this apology series! I wanted to provide my perception (as explained to me by social media professionals) as to one of the reasons PR teams might tell an apology to be brief. There are probably many more reasons than this one. The public has groups of people who are willing to accept and hear a genuine apology, and a group of people who are primarily interested in generating backlash and don’t want to accept an apology. Unfortunately, the second group tends to be the more vocal, the more obvious, and even the more dangerous group of the public even if they are likely fewer in number. I could easily see “not wanting to add fuel to the fire” as a reason for being brief in an apology. That being said, I much more appreciate the genuine ones, as it makes me appreciate that they are real emotive humans too and not just characters on a screen.

She is a groomer. Videos, receipts of chats and texts, sending inappropriate gift to a minor across national borders. Told the kids not to tell their parents about the chats. Had her very predatory brother and her also predatory ‘bff’ Kory in those chats, where they also did things that could easily harm kids. She ‘family vlogs’ which is awful for kids-and even doxxed her own child’s dance class location. She used those kids as free labor to run her media. Again while telling them not to tell anyone. Plus other things listed below. I suspect that if Adam’s mom had not found the underwear-Adam might have been coerced to pose in the clothes. My opinion. Adam was not asking for the panties and bra. Please get that straight. Adam and the other victims have been horribly and brutally abused by her fans-and not even once has she spoken out about that. And indeed there are receipts of her encouraging them to go after others. Evil is the word.

As an actual victim thank you for this. People have watered certain words down so they mean nothing now. Colleen isn't a predator or any of those things, even by definition. I as an actual victim cannot speak out without getting attacked because people wanna virtue signal and act as sheep who cannot think critically for themselves. It's infuriating. She hurt people and was incredibly inappropriate but that does NOT make her a groomer. People wanna talk about reformation but they don't really want that. It's crazy how powerful a story and crowds can get. All sheep, and I've never seen anything like this before. I've watched countless videos on her and none prove towards her being those things. That doesn't mean she wasn't bad or did bad things. People act if you disagree then it's "downplaying". downplaying how? Because we disagree over a words meaning? That just means YOU don't see her actions as that bad if you think having that word next to her means anything.

An important detail for Adam's story is that at some point he was creating content for Colleen for free, just because he was a fan. Colleen pretended that SHE came up with the content, and baited him that she would hire him later. Then one of the posts didn't do well, many got offended. Then she publicly blamed Adam (only for that one post), and got all her followers to harass him for years. This is one of the things Adam cites in when he talks about grooming. Colleen's apology is a bit shallow. I would like her to say this is what I did, detailed. Saying "I was inappropriate" is too surface level at this point, given how much she pushed back before. This is an apology for the way she handled the issues, not the issues themselves.
@enraegen561 Жыл бұрын
The last part (apologizing for the previous, crappy apology) is a genius manipulation. It is genuine, and feels right, and she can do that because it is a less embarrassing transgression. It gives the illusion that she somehow apologized for the main issue, when she didn't at all.

The description of the bra and panties you gave is not accurate. It’s based on an edited video. SHE sad the fan should take the bra and panties, and he said he would want them AFTER her suggestion. Also what’s covered in this video is not even a third of the things she has done. Spreading nude pictures and having watch parties to make fun of a friend is kind of a big deal. She did that as recently as 2 years ago and lied to the friend about it in July. As well as exploiting the labor of their fans, exposing them to her p3d0file brother, sending her fans to attack people, and like at least 3-4 other things not covered here or in her (and I believe your) other videos.

@dandelion_official4812 Жыл бұрын
Low grade for this assignment Dr 😬 I would encourage you to get your facts from someone other than Colleen... She actually edited the footage from that livestream to make it LOOK like what you described. She edited out the parts where she offered them to him multiple times and Kory did a s3xyy modeling moment in them and TOLD ADAM TO DO THE SAME. When said lingere arrived in Northern Ireland Colleen and Kory had him sneak them out from where his outraged mother had hidden them to wear over his clothes LIKE KORY DID on a live stream. Her editing of that footage is a major reason why her smear campaign of Adam as a crazed fan worked. He did not initially ask for them - that was a proven lie. Also REGARDLESS of whether he had or not - she as a 30yo woman POSTED THEM INTERNATIONALLY to a child. KNOWING it was wrong - she even said in the same live stream that his parents would say "you're not allowed to watch that person that sent you bra and panties anymore". That is calculated. She realised he was very funny, and knew a lot about social media. Perfect target for her to groom as he ended up supplying her with content for four years. She kept him awake until 4am telling him lies about her ex husband abusing her, and when the inevitable divorce arrived he was on the front line defending her from her "abuser" in some of the most toxic places online. When he was AT SCHOOL. The lingerie was a way to test the waters, and then she went further. She had him travel 4HOURS to Dublin to meet her, and once she realised his parents were dropping him off directly she changed plans and left him alone on the streets of an unfamiliar city. Luckily his mother is a very smart lady and remained close by keeping an eye on her child because who KNOWS what else could have occurred. You did him and all her other victims a huge disservice here.

Round 2. I am sorry for sounding negative. I understand Balanger has grown up on social media and has a completely different relationship to it than me. She asked minors about getting divorce advice and talked about sexual things about her husband. A child does not need to know that Colleen was saying her husband had tiny privates. Sadly, Once the child (or her ex husband) was no useful to her, she Would send fans after those people. She had children working for her for free. Adam did not ask for the underwear. It was idea of Colleen’s assistant/friend in that video, Cody, and Colleen found it hilarious and agreed with it and joked that Adam’s mom will be disturbed, like haha so funny mom will go nuts over who sent it. WHICH SHE WAS DISTURBED. For obvious reasons. Then after Adam came out to explain this much later she sicked those other young fans in him - not directly she’s not that stupid. She would go to chats with fans and just victimize herself like aw damn that boy is just out to get me in so hurt. The fact that so many teens then reacted aggressively towards Adam shows that her grooming was working. She basically manipulated a bunch of teens to do her bidding. And THAT is not what this apology talks about.

Dr. Honda there's an important detail about the "bra and panties" incident that you missed. The fan in question, Adam, was only 13. He did not request the items at first. He was participating in a livestream chat as a minor and said he thought they were "really ugly" and that was funny to him (again, he was 13). Colleen read his comment on the stream and joked that he was being rude and said she send them to him as a form of payback. She and her friend who was on the stream with her then began goading Adam and taunting him asking if he wanted them. Her friend also tried them on over his clothes. Adam played along and said sure, he would take them. Then he forgot about it completely until the package arrived at his house weeks later and his parents were horrified. It's by far not the most egregious thing she did but the order of operations here is important and demonstrates that Colleen is the instigator, not the other way around. When Adam first told this story a few years ago both Colleen and her friend on the stream lied and said that Adam was "begging for them" and implied they almost felt coerced by *Adam* to sending them.

Oftentimes it's because of behavior that isn't a huge violation of accepted etiquette but bothers me nonetheless. Or I just feel fundamental incompatibility. When I unmatch them, I often include "I'm sorry" even though I don't regret anything. It's sort of an acknowledgement that their feelings might be hurt and I'm not happy about that. And an acknowledgement that they are not terrible people and don't deserve to have their feelings deliberately hurt. Is this the wrong way? Is there better etiquette around this?
