Hey Ivan. I have made many comments on your videos and told you before your intellect and skills lend yourself to shine with working on German cars. Looks like you have this one nailed already and excited for part 2. Especially so for me because- I had an E92 335i N54. I loved it and although it was a bit temperamental, it actually saved my life. Two people hit me head on (they were doing 10MPH on the wrong side of the road and I was doing 60MPH) and they both died. I note the chassis number was 7 digit behind end P which means it was built in Regensburg. Hearing it and seeing the engine made me smile a lot. Fix her and take her for an extended test drive. Absolutely brilliant cars. ❤ love them and also you and your amazing work.

Yo Ivan, to get easier access down front of engine, remove two small torx holding inlet snorkel above radiator and disconnect snorkel from airbox and remove. Hand tighten reasonably cwhen reassembling so don’t strip plastic threads in snorkel.

Been telling you for years, Germans think about engineering and maintenance usually so it might look bad on first assessment but taking a few parts which are designed to be easily removed changes the workability hugely.

One of my customers owns one of these. I've done a lot of work on it. The throttle body inlet pipe is a weak point. They like to crack and blow right off the throttle body. BMW updated the design and if you buy a new one from them it's beefed up. They're like $300 though. Canister purge valves are a common failure point. The weatherstrip above the windshield turns to crap, as does the passenger side front door pull. All easy fixes. It's a fun car to drive.

It's easy to afford a BMW, it's less easy to pay to repair it. If you want to own a BMW and drive it beyond 90,000 miles, make sure you have a well equipped garage and know how to diagnose and repair things that don't normally break on other cars. I loved my BMW, but my weekends were spent fixing things (I had it for 180K miles). Plus there are lots of fake parts out there. I would buy another BMW, but only for a weekend driver. Or lease it and dump it at 50K miles

Hi Ivan, That's a nice BMW. Keeping fingers crossed it's only the exhaust cam sensor. I just had to replace the water inlet on my 2006 Toyota Sienna van with 3.3L V6. The water inlet broke where the lower radiator hose is attached. Hate those plastic parts. Dorman had an aluminum replacement that fit like a glove and came with a thermostat for $45 and change. Took me three days working only an hour at a time due to my chronic low back pain. Looking forward to part 2.

I think the OEM replacements for those are metal upgrades. I know it’s a non electronic Dorman part, but I’d still be hesitant to use it considering the access. The last non electronic Dorman part I tried( customer’s idea) lasted about 30 miles, but it was easy access.

A friend's daughter had her eyes on a beautiful turbo BMW at a used car dealer, I forget what model it was. She asked me to take a look at it before they bought it. First thing I noticed was it was leaking oil from just about every orifice on the engine. Took it for a drive and engine had no power at all, never even felt like the turbo was coming in. Seemed to idle decent but when I removed the oil cap it literally shot off the valve cover and the engine would completely drop a cylinder. Put cap back on and cylinder came back. And to top it off, no codes for anything. Told her to run as fast as she could.

Might not directly be a sensor issue. The +5V is pulled up from the ECM through a resistor and the sensor pulls the line down, but if there is too much resistance on the signal line (bad wire or wonky contact) then the pull-up may not be strong enough to take it all the way to 5V. That's also consistent with the signal level dropping when it heats up. Unplugging the sensor means it's not sourcing any more current, so it will always pull up to +5V.

If you remove the sensor and read the signal and pull it up with a piece of metal the voltage was erratic at 3.8/3.9/4.0 volts. A good sensor pulls to a steady voltage of 4.8, in my case.

The typical repair approach would be to follow the direction of the cam sensor codes and replace the exhaust cam sensor. It's probably not crazy expensive and if it doesn't fix it, you'd diagnose a wiring or other issue. And having a new sensor (plus the old one) isn't a terrible outcome.
@LeverPhile
@LeverPhile Күн бұрын
Why not check the wiring first though? Its easy to do.
@kevin9c1
@kevin9c1 Күн бұрын
@@LeverPhile Of course I'd check the plug and wire at the sensor when replacing it. But I'm not going to pull the entire loom apart and load check the signal wire to the engine computer, while flexing every inch of the wire or something. I'll look into that if the new sensor doesn't fix it. If the part was NOT known for failure or was "very expensive" then yes I'd spend more time on the diagnosis. This is really a learning channel so I expect Ivan to show us the process that leads to a 100% diagnosis. But I'm saying in the real world, you don't need to bring out the O-scope for this unless either the new sensor didn't fix it, or if the new sensor is extremely pricey and I need to be sure. HE needs to be sure because that's the service he provides. I do agree that with the visible mouse infestation, taking a closer look at the wiring was warranted but I still would have just replaced the sensor and reevaluated the situation.

For my vehicles that are setting, including my ATV and boat, I’ve used rodent control repellent that has stopped rodent storing food and damage.

Hate working on 3 series as everything is stuffed into the engine bay, the 335's are especially awful for access. 5 series are much nicer to work on as there's loads more room to work.

I guess the wiring integrity is good from the test leads to the ecu but from the leads to the sensor could still have issues. Bmw uses twisted pair to combat signal interference and if a mouse were to expose a little copper then piss on it that could cause a fluctuation like this.. and the nest was right in between where the leads were tied into the copper and the sensor itself.. more than likely its the sensor but ruling out the copper totally in my opinion is not 100%.. is like 85% likely its the sensor.. and as a poor person for a part that costs more than 20$ its worth my time to verify complete wire integrity..

Garage Queen. Sensor failure at 15-16 years and low mileage. Time not mileage... hermetic seals fail, capacitors fail, and fuse/antifuse logic devices of that era are beyond the typical end of life (10 yr mfg guarantee). Heat is the enemy and those underhood beauty covers not only retain heat but give the mice a nice place to hide. Some people don't like using rodentcides but they work more efficiently than any trap and keep mice urine and feces out of everything that maybe stored in the garage along with the cars.

Problem with rodenticide is that they may end up in an inaccessible crawl space (car or house) before giving up the ghost.

@LeverPhile Don't wait for the mice to nest in your structure. Keep bait stations maintained all year round. Once you've abated, new arrivals will likely die elsewhere.
@LeverPhile

@@CJRock-xn5qf That does not address the problem with rodenticide, which is not immediate necessarily. If rat makes it into an inaccessible crawl space of your home or car and then croaks, good luck with the clean up.

How would you diagnose it without a scope? Easy, parts cannon. Shop looks at trouble codes. Shop replaces cam sensors. Problem is fixed if they install OEM sensors. But they still would have no way of knowing 100% it’s going to fix it without the scope.

I'll never understand how someone can own a beautiful car, such as this......well made, powerful, low miles, rarely driven and let it become infested with rodents!?! That just, absolutely, makes ZERO sense, to me. I mean, what's the point of taking care of it if you're just gonna let it become a REALLY nice condo for rats and mice!?! Truly UNBELIEVABLE! What really gets me is that there are PLENTY of options out there to effectively deal with this problem. Ridiculous.
