Public Relations 101

3 жыл бұрын

Enough of the childish social media challenges going around - example: "bottle cap"/"b&w filter"/"kiki challenges"/"don't rush". Let's UP our games. Have an insight to share on your industry? Have something to add about #publicrelations I may not have mentioned in this video? Think I can add more about #advertising or #marketing, and I didn't say enough? I challenge you to be #highperformance, make a #video, share your #knowledge about your industry, and help me and other life-long learners collaborate together to build a #knowledgeeconomy!
Would love your support (as well as a ‘thumbs up’ and hit of the ‘subscribe’ button, of course!).

When i read any article say about some company,how do i know if it an official company pr vs unofficial newsworthy topic ?
@PR101
@PR101 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's an excellent question (I'm surprised more people don't ask it!). Look, the best source to get "official" company news is by going on to the company website. In the GCC, many newspapers will receive press release news and publish it, mostly as is. So here, newspapers are pretty straightforward, sometimes mundane, when it comes to corporate/company news. Other markets, like the US, Asia, and Europe, tend to do deeper, more investigative-style journalism. They'll quote more than just the company they are covering, interview other stakeholders, and balance the conversation. Extending the same logic, if there's even a hint of negativity in the news piece, it's obvious a company wouldn't say it about itself, so it's not a press release. One the other hand, if it's overly one-sided, short praiseful news about a particular announcement/subject with no real deeper story, than chances are it is a press release. Another clue is if you copy/paste bits of the news and like 10 sites are showing you the same exact sentence structure, it's obvious that it was a press release. One last clue that works in certain cases is that some news sites carry a boilerplate (or a contact information for the PR agency) under the news. That's also a tell-tale sign that it's a press release (received and published, as is) from the PR agents of a company.

Advertising is selling a product. Measured by volume of sales. Marketing is getting the product in front of public that needs/wants it. Measured in comparison to competitive product sales. (example 15% of market, 3rd place). Public relations is how the public feels about (trusts) the company that sells the product. This a factor that affects the other 2 indirectly. This requires public feedback to measure its effectiveness. (Web hits, surveys, responding to public and press inquiries). How did I do PR 101?

Thank you. PR is a great field - and yes, it does sometimes seem more underrated than an MBA (and PR degree programs are harder to find). I think the best advice I can give you is to get your foot into the door - contact PR agencies in your city, tell them you'd love to intern (internships are not just for students - it is truly for all ages), and try it out. Most amazing PR professionals don't have degrees in PR (I don't and I only know one person in my 7-year career that has had a PR degree) and got into the field just because they found it fun and managed to get their foot in the door through their sheer perseverance.

I am a recent BA graduate and start a MA in Public relations this fall. I really enjoy the concept o public relations and marketing, but chose to go into PR as I preferred the concept of building brand trust and reputation, creating creative campaigns as apposed to working towards sales figures. However, I am now worried that i made the wrong choice as I can be a little shy at times and am not the person who can walk into a room with the confidence to walk up to everybody and start conversations. How important is this in terms of the networking side, and do you think I have made the wrong choice?

Hey Zeinab, good luck with starting your brand in the near future! While a more business-centric field (business admin, business management, etc.) may have been the classic choice 20 years ago, today, a degree in advertising, public relations, and social media, innovation, branding, etc. may be the more relevant choice to making that business successful so long as you have the business acumen and capital needed to launch your business. I'll definitely add it to my next list of videos - thanks for the lovely idea. Just a bite-size answer on that now, Ishie: to be honest, today, nothing that isn't 360 degree comms (inclusive of paid media, earned media, and owned media) is likely to amount to a lot of PR success. Paid media and advertising is critical to the distance your idea goes. Also, p.s. healthy track records of advertising with various print, digital, and broadcast channels also help promote amounts of earned coverage by the same channels in many cases.

I'm a beginner but this is how I see it; Marketing: Does not come in contact with Clients, they just put the word out there. Unless you are also a sales rep in the marketing department. Public Relations: Direct Contact with clients/prospects also, try to keep a relationship.
@PR101
@PR101 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Jon. I imagine today, marketing teams would also be very much in contact with the clients (to align on vision and objectives) before creating products/selling existing products. At the end of the campaign, they would also take some kind of surveys amongst their target audiences as to how their products/services are being received. But you wouldn't be wrong to say PR absolutely lives in the thick of the 2 way communication, managing the clients reputation, telling them what to say, monitoring their audiences' behavior daily, and tailoring their strategy/approach along the way to get more favourable outcomes for the client. PR also, importantly, goes way beyond the service or product being marketed. We are incharge of overall reputation and narrative, which is way bigger than just one product or service of the client.
