Take an old set of valve covers, cut the tops off and install them. Start the engine, loosen the 1st rocker arm till it chatters, tighten it till it stops making noise, tighten half a turn. Repeat 15 times.

The screws you're referring to are your idle mixture screws. If one is closed off, then the bank that screw serves will run lean, thus one side of the engine will run hotter than the other.

That van will probably tow just as good as your pickup., maybe better. The only difference between the two might come down to the gearing. The only downside I’ve ever experienced towing with a cargo van is they are harder to see out of, other than that they are pretty similar. On a side note: I had a fleet of vans for my business both Ford and GM and the weak point of the GM vans was their transmission so you might want to do a preventative service on yours. I think I put transmissions in ever one I owned but we put a crap ton of miles on them everyday. They were excellent trucks. At first you might get the creeper van vibe but driving them kinda grows on you and you see why people like them.
@davidhazel36

Yeah, the ford's are the worst. I've blown every ford trans i ever had. Gm trans last much longer.
@MastaT_150
@MastaT_150 Жыл бұрын
Well I would disagree with them being the worst but to each their own. I can only speak on the van’s I’ve personally had and out of all them I’ve never had to put a trans in any of the Fords but that’s not to say I’ve never replaced a transmission in a Ford because I definitely have, just not in any of the vans. I was thinking about it and I can’t remember if the Chevy’s I had were 4L60’s or 4L80’s, but if I was to guess I would venture to say they were probably 4L60’s since they are notorious for not being the best. Even at that they were still excellent vehicles and they got the crap beat out of them everyday. Every brand has problems there is no perfect vehicle out there…

When I set valves I use a bore scope. Set each cylinder one by one to TDC. Use the bore scope to watch the valves open and then back off until they just close. Makes it so damn simple. I've done so many of these in the last 7 years every engine has been different. I've had some that had open valves at 1/2 and 3/4 turn down. But doing the bore scope method I can guarantee they are right on the money allowing for max lift and 100% sure of closure.

Couple of thoughts. In my state they require you to run the exhaust out the back to get beyond the interior of the vehicle. I guess if it is legal in your state just be sure you aren't getting fumes inside. Back when I had a 283, I always adjusted the valves while it was running. Seemed to work really well. Nice to see the project coming together.

MAN I"M LUVIN' that Wagon!! Just an FYI. Change the PCV from the pass side to the driver side. Engines pull fresh crank case air from the pass side (thru the breather) and release to the driver side where the carb picks it up thru the pcv. You might be creating a internal vacuum that may or may not cause tuneability issues. The PCV is a one way check valve. Therefore the engine is not able to pull fresh crankcase air in and will create a vacuum which may be why you are having a hard time setting the valves. Just something to consider. Luv the work you're doing. Keep up the great content.

It'll bounce down the road if it doesn't have any weight in it. It tows amazing too. Used it to move some friends recently, packed to the brim and pulling a full uhaul trailer it acts like nothing is there.
