From an old gas tank repair technician.. the best way to make sure nothing blows up when welding a gas tank. Just run a vacuum lose from a running vehicle’ exhaust to the tank. The exhaust allows you to weld without any fires or explosion

You don't have to fill the tank with water to weld it. If you drain it and hook up a hose to the exhaust of a car and put the other end of the hose into the tank and let the car run for a while it will make it safe to weld. Try it. I did it that way for years and never had an issue. It was something my Dad showed me when I was 11 years old.

I was going to suggest an inert gas like nitrogen (we use it when welding on large oil filled transformers), but the exhaust is probably insert and definitely available.

Put some thick rubber washers under the tops of the straps where the retaining bolts go through when you re-install the tank. They should at least absorb some of the vibration. Also, find an old inner tube and cut it into strips to go between the tank and the support that you built, and also between the new straps and the tank.

Caught that too. There should definitely be some rubber between the straps and the tank. Road dirt is going to act like an abrasive disk and it will eventually wear through the tank. Maybe not soon, but eventually.

All you have to do is run an exhaust in the gas tank and it neutralizes the gas fumes in the tank so you can weld it safely, use a lawn mower or edger, believe me it works
@justin-sane713
@justin-sane713 Жыл бұрын
My Dad taught me like his Dad taught him, how to weld a gas tank. You clean it out the best you can then use a hose (vaccum hose works good) in the exhaust of another vehicle in the fuel tank. Run it for a few minutes. Leave it in if you can while you weld it. Remember the longer you run the vehicle the hotter the exhaust gets and it will melt the hose. It’s the fumes that will ignite even with water in the tank unless it is completely full. Glad you made it through it without an issue! Keep up the good content!

Puddin, I used to weld Gas and Diesel tanks using either Mig or Tig. Some were steel, Stainless, Aluminum and sometimes Alloys. Steaming out (if possible) the tanks cleaned a lot of the junk out of them. The key to welding the tanks was to fill them with a non flammable or inert gas. Depending on the welding process used the gas could be CO2, Argon mix or combinations of them. A good and easy substitute is to fill the tank with Dry Ice pieces. I have also welded, Brazed and Soldered small engine tanks by simply piping engine exhaust into the tank. It certainly reduces the risk of an accident.

My friend owned a body shop and when he fixed gas tanks he would do 1 of 2 things depending on his mood. 1 he would empty the tank as much as plausible and throw a match in it as his foot held the tank down 2 he would hook the exhaust in to the tank and fill it with exhaust to replace the gas fumes. I knowing about the 2 methods would be across the street watching him.

Let Mr tell you, hammer therapy is a real thing. It will let out alot of stress. About 25 years ago I was stressed out super bad,I went to my garage grabbed a sledge hammer and a push mower pulled it into the back yard a went to swinging on it. Parts were flying off of it with every swing. After 5 minutes or so I picked up all the parts and tossed it all into the alley next to my trash can then went towards the house. Looking up my wife's standing there with the neighbors wife. She is telling her "Oh he just got some bad news" and the neighbor says "Well at least it was the mower!" I went inside for 10 minutes or so then decided to go see the damage now that I calmed down and when I get out there the mower was gone. Luckily I had 5 more mowers in my garage. (I used to rebuild junk mowers) and that was the best stress relief I ever had. I know it sounds childish, but I was in my early 20's then so its ok to be a bit childish.

The old timers say to use exhaust from a running vehicle to purge out a gas tank you need to weld on, just slip a hose in the tailpipe of a car, leave it running and put the other end into the emptied and dried out fuel tank. I know its after the fact but thought I would share.

I quick story about fuel vapors. I was working up past latitude 68.4 at a Dew-Line camp located at Cape Hooper Nunavut, Canada where my crews task was to squeegee the floors inside several 65,000 gallon fuel-oil silo's into a sump to then be removed. Story goes that a group of Native Eskimo hunters were out on their 25" canoe style boats hunting seal & Norwell whales when bad weather had caused them to hold-out at Cape Hooper on the beach where this Dew-line ( Distant early warning ) camp was located, only the camp itself was not on the beach , it was up a 20 min vertical drive to 1400 feet before it plateaued. At any rate , during the raging weather that stranded them there, the Group of hunters came across the three 65,000 gallon fuel oil silo's and seeked shelter in one of them that was empty. They all climbed through the portal opening finally out of the severe weather. Can you guess what there downfall was? There was no remains, just red stained interior walls. I have pictures that show me trying to ignite 18- 45 gal drums of the pumped out fuel oil during a 40 mph cross wind with a lite oil soaked rag wrapped around a wood stake that I had to initially light inside the cab of 5 ton camp truck. With that burning rag on a stick , it took several minutes holding the flame directly in the raw fuel oil before it would stay burning. Just goes to show, it's not so much the fuel itself that causes combustion, it's the collection of itt's vapours. True story.
