You gotta remember all the big names in hip hop from the late 80s through the mid 90s grew up with hardly any rap. It was still mostly in the streets in the 80s when they were young. So they were taking samples from rock, RnB, funk, and everything else they were exposed to or found and rapped over it, and established what we know as classic, older hip hop today. It's not like rappers now who might have listened to hip hop their whole lives. So artists back then of course knew all the rock hits and much much more.

The key word there is "samples". Puffy didn't use samples in a subtle way and mix them. He just ripped a track whole and laid garbage flows over it. It is all he does.

I bought this album the day it came out because it captured the tragedy of his death in a way that made it feel like I wasn’t alone in how unfair it felt and how sad it made me over somebody I never met. It’s a beautiful tribute to a friend, father, son and a legend in rap and American culture. Helped to cope with how cruel and pointless it felt to lose Pac and then Biggie over nothing. Nipsey was probably the next time I really felt that angry and sad over somebody I never met.

The other way that makes sense (especially for coding) is year/month/day. But at no point ever is month/day/year useful or sensical. I get why USians do it- it’s because they say January 8th etc. but there’s no need to change the way it’s written just for that. And even Seppos say it the other way around sometimes, when they say “the Fourth of July”. There’s no excuse. 😊

A lot of rockers from the original era always resented rappers using riffs from original musicians. They consider it to be ripping them off. Just because of the time it takes to be a good guitarist or bassist or drummer, singer, songwriter, etc. I personally like all music.
