6:30 (An excerpt) The shell phone is not a real thing. According to Mitchell (in the Yahoo interview), the sea shell smartphone/e-reader was made up for the movie to keep things feeling “like a dream or something outside of time”.
@ChefK4y Жыл бұрын
My interpretation of the movie is that it's supposed to feel like an era-less nightmare which is why the characters feel so weird and lifeless and its impossible to pinpoint a specific era that they are in. A lot of people theorize that the kids have been transported to some nightmare version of where they live, which is why its so grey and empty and there are no parents around any of the characters besides the girl in the beginning, with her concerned father. To me, the world and characters feel very uncanny which gives me such a weird feeling of anxiety. I love this movie and it deserves so much more recognition!
@KwameSteward Жыл бұрын
like a dream...interesting
@robertyeah2259 Жыл бұрын
i like this interpretation a lot. but it’s also possible that a lot of the dream like setting is a side effect of being set and filmed in lower-middle class Detroit. At least as far as the somber emptiness of the setting. But the acting does seem intentionally stilted and strange.
@ChefK4y Жыл бұрын
@@robertyeah2259 That's possible! I will say, I went to school in Detroit, and even in the lower-income areas, despite it not being as populated, it still held some form of life, like people sitting on their porch talking, people riding bikes, people walking and waiting for the bus. But how they convey Detroit in this world just felt so... empty. As if people aren't really /meant/ to be there. And to add to that nightmarish feeling, you literally can't tell what year it is. Like the weird shell phone seems more futuristic, but the house the MC lives in is very 80s, and the neighbor guy across the street is very 90s. And when the two sisters are walking in the beginning, one is dressed in a winter coat and boots and the other is wearing a flannel and shorts. You can't even tell what season it is. It feels so chaotic but very on purpose, if that makes sense. Sorry for such a long message, I love talking about this stuff with others. :)

I was lucky enough to be able to watch this movie for the first time in a theater all to myself. Truly an unforgettable experience. Although admittedly, this movie made me extremely paranoid for a few days afterwards. I was constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure there wasn’t anyone silently following me. 😂
@danwilliams2551 Жыл бұрын
This movie is a nightmare coming of age tale about realizing you are going to die. There's a couple speeches like them looking at the kid in the theatre "How cool would it be to have your whole life ahead of you again" and the teacher and the girl on her e-reader at the hospital are discussing facing down death. Once the realization fully drops in your life, it will never go away. It's always approaching, and that fact begins to taint everything you enjoy - the movie is filled with her doing things she used to do as a kid, but she finds no joy in them anymore, too anxious about what's coming. You can push it away with the act that has the fullest amount of life energy - sex - but it's a temporary high. It can be close, it can be far, but it's always coming. Even after the pool scene, she props a chair against a door because the fear is always there and she must now learn how to live life carrying that weight. The last line of the movie is "The worst thing is that it is CERTAIN."
@meesh11p Жыл бұрын
I will say to the lead actress feeling stunted - I think it's intentional and a directorial choice. She is fantastic in other films such as Watcher - this is one of her early roles too.
@90bubbel60 Жыл бұрын
yeah this is one of the horror movies that actually make me really anxious. the monster may be slow but it never stops, there is something so incredibly stressfull about it. kinda reminds me of when you were younger and doing cod zombies on higher rounds, No jumpscares just a constant sense of tension and stress.

It Follows is a such an interesting movie, tons of little things you can miss at a first time watching... so much stuff in the background and the music is fantastic. As a movie it doesn't follow (haha funny joke) a conventional narrative. No real conclusion, no real downtime for the tension to go away... it's a constant state of paranoia and hopelessness, we never learn anything aside from what we got at the beginning and all attemps to defeat this entity ultimately amount to nothing. It's a very interesting direction for a movie to take. Really enjoyed your reaction too... I'm not sure how often people tell you that, but you just have a certain natural charm to yourself that makes you very likable and entertaining to watch.

The director really did so many seemingly “little” things to make the atmosphere uncomfortable. To the point where you can’t exactly place why you feel ‘off’. Like one instance it seems to be summer or warm weather, and the next the leaves down and it looks cold. How in the houses there’s old things, so it seems from decades past, but then there’s a stainless steel recent fridge. And then the seashell device the girl has that can’t be places anywhere because it doesn’t exist. And more. These subtle things that you don’t consciously notice are there to make you feel uneasy subconsciously. I know it worked for me! The plot of the story on paper seems mundane. But the movie creeped me out so much. It left me with that creepy eerie feeling the whole night after watching it. There’s an article that explains it better but the things they did sure worked.

Fun reaction Pugg. I think the director deliberately had the lead, Maika Monroe, act so lowkey. I have seen her in another movie that I had YMM react to called The Guest, which funny enough released in the same year as It Follows, and in that she had tons more personality in it. I think the reason for the lowkey, subtle reaction to her situation was to help maintain the calm and dreading tone of the film. Which is probably why everything else also feels so muted. Great work dude! If you want another slow burn movie with some moments of violence at the level of Terrifier, you should check out Bone Tomahawk. Has Kurt Russell from The Thing and Patrick Wilson from Insidious and The Conjuring in it.
