A new study out of RVC examined how pugs, along with some other brachycephalic breeds, are completely atypical relative to the broader dog population, and not in a good way. In this video I review the article and give some thoughts on pugs.

I recently became a member of the Balto community. Balto makes braces for dogs and I plan to use the neck braces for cases of cervical spinal instability. I think these braces are less cumbersome and much easier to place compared to traditional bandaging measures. People have become so anthropomorphic about their pets. I remember one client remarking that they had a mellow pug and they thought it’s snoring was so cute. She played a video and I can honestly say I was impressed that the owner could sleep through it. We had to tell her it was not normal while we watched the pug nod off to sleep in the exam room. I remember thinking it’s not a mellow puppy, it’s an exhausted puppy because it can’t sleep. We widened the nares, shortened a really long soft palate and removed everted saccules. About 2 months later The same owner ended up bringing her older pug in for the same surgery. She said her mellow puppy became a little hell on wheels and she felt really bad that she just didn’t realize what a toll it took on her puppy. BOAS is present at birth, it doesn’t suddenly affect adult pugs so people that get these little guys at a really young age don’t realize it’s not normal because it’s been doing it for it’s entire life. She was told by the breeder it was normal. When a problem affects the ability to breathe it is not normal, it is exhausting and at times life threatening, but never normal. Outside of work, It’s hard to talk to people about this problem because they automatically assume I hate the breed and I don’t. I have come across beautiful pugs, frenchies and English bulldogs with fantastic personalities but they shouldn’t have to suffer (I don’t know what else struggling to breathe can be considered) because human beings gave purposely bred them into this condition because they thought it was aesthetically pleasing. Ask someone that needs an asthma inhaler how they feel right before they use it and right after and you might get some small idea of what it’s like. The human is way more fortunate because they have an inhaler and know there’s relief right around the corner.

@@tikimillie I first heard about retro pugs yesterday Ended up on a website of French Bulldog breeders - and they (of course) didn't recommend the retro pug, because: it's too active (because it can breath), sometimes barks (because it's mixed with jack russel) and don't look "special." I won't even go into what they said about frenchies, but yeah... this is how these people think. I do hate the breed - pugs that is (and frenchies). A wonderful personality does not make up for the poor health breeders have given to them. It's just so sad, and being a breed is what has done this to them. I fostered a bulldog once, so he could lose some weight so they could sedate him - fantastic personality, but all I could see was his twisted back legs and exercise intolerance. He was a great guy - used to hump me though... every bull terrier that came into the shelter wanted to hump me, the only dogs I ever had that issue with.

Vet tech here. We had a pug come into out practice early last week with severe breathing troubles (we were at the beginning of a mild heat wave at that time). The owner didn't even realize the danger the dog was in. Poor thing was in so much stress and overheating she got a fever of 104°F and rising. We sent her to our nearest clinic for treatment, where she was put under general anesthesia to clear airways and cool her down several times during her two days she spent there. She passt away in the clinic, she was 11 years old. Later that week, still in the same mild heat wave, someone brought us their deceased French Bulldogg. 3 years old. Collapsed from overheating only two streets from our practice. Immediately dead. I'm sorry to all the lovers of brachycephalic dogs, I don't hate you and I don't personally hate your dogs, but I hate these breeds. I hate seeing these poor creatures suffer. I hate seeing them doing so d*mn well under general anesthesia, because they've got a tube down their throat and can finally breath for the first time in their godd*mn lives. I hate hearing them strugge for oxygen every time they take a breath.

I feel all of this. I have a Frenchton who has somewhat of a snout. That being said living in FL, we are not outside for longer than to potty during the warm months. As much as she enjoys sunbathing, I simply won't allow it. I love her to pieces, she's a great dog, so sweet. I won't be "supporting" their breeding after her as it is just not fair to them. Thank you for doing what you do!

I have had pekingese for all my life and when I had my first one in the 70's she lived to 16 years, no breathing issues but ..... Lulu had a a face that the nose was not "pushed in" nice size nostrils and died from heart failure at 16 - a great age for a dog. When I got my second and third pekingese from a different breeder in the mid 90's ( they were x breeding Pekes and in a bad way so , in a sense , I rescued them) they had flat faces and the breeder when seeing a photo of my old girl Lulu said "she is NOT a pekingese" .... well, she bloody was and if you look at the old photos way back in history you will see that Peke's and probably Pugs had longer noses. Some idiot thought it was better to selectively breed them with flatter faces . My two girls had a lovely well cared for life with me but they died around 10 years and it was horrendous for me , my husband and the Vet. I now have one last Pekingese who has the short nose and from that same breeder .... they are born so I feel , with me they will live a better life but Dr Cellini he will be my last pekingese.... I love the breed for their personality and sweetness but I cannot live through another breathing issue dog. Things NEED to change.

People always seem to talk about Bernese and histiocytosis, dobermann's and DCM, Dalmatians and deafness (which at least doesnt directly kill them, but I digress). I've personally had friends say "Oh I couldn't get X because they're so likely to die of [Histio\DCM], so many of them die and it's awful. I got a pug\frenchie instead." Like are you actually serious. I would love to see data or a comparative analysis on these notorious diseases diagnosis rates in BMD's and dobie's compared to the diagnosis rate of BOAS in pugs. I would bet money that despite how infamous those problems are, they're still vastly less common than the like... 90% of pugs that have at least SOME signs of BOAS.

Exotics Vet tech here with a Holland Lop Rabbit that I own which we like to joke as "the pug of rabbit breeds". They have that same flat smushed face and a lot of the same issues in my experience. Of course, she has had to have surgery on her eye due to a chronic 3 year eye ulcer (classic) and she wheezes and snorts while sleeping. Freaks me out constantly and I have often woken her up during her naps cuz she just sounds too strained for me to be comfortable. It was really interesting seeing her CT scan of her skull (taken due to dental issues, no surprise there lol). Glad to see a study like this on Pugs and I agree that all brachycephalic breeds should be bred out. Thank you, Dr. Cellini, for another great video!

I've been on a rabbit forum called Bunspace and the rabbits with the most tooth problems and eye problems are indeed the lops. I've never had a lop and warn people not to get them. I agree all brachycephalic breeds should be bred out but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Totally agree with all these points-- people want so many mixed "designer" breeds and doodles but won't cross a brachycephalic dog with a non-brachycephalic one to let them breathe better??? (Not recommending we make pugadoodles because that actually sounds like a raging dumpster fire of a disaster, but you get my point) Also-- would love to hear your thoughts on sports medicine and rehabilitation and its use with neuro patients. I'm a vet student and I work with a lot of neuro patients in our sports medicine department and would like to hear a neurologist's perspective on the discipline.

Not a neurologist or sports med surgeon/clinician here, but I spent a lot of extra time with them as my mentors at school (mostly the small animal side; I didn’t spend much time with the large animal cases to be able to speak to that side of it, especially since the ones I did see were either unable to be treated, or they were primary ortho’ injuries). We had a ton of overlap in therapy/treatment plans created at CSU (US teaching hospital) by the neurologists working alongside the sports medicine teams when I was there. Like most treatment plans, it was incredibly dependent on the condition diagnosed what modalities or physical therapy would then be recommended, and at what stages each is safely introduced for a given condition and patient. Since leaving CSU, I think the biggest struggle I find is having both specialities available in a given geographic area to recommend, so it makes the multimodal therapy/treatment plan coordination trickier.

“Puggles” are a thing. It’s a pug cross bred with a beagle hound. I used to go to church with a lady who had three “puggles”. They have a little bit more snout than a pure pug. I would compare it to a boxer snout but maybe a teensy bit longer. Anyway they DO cross breed pugs.

AMEN! I Absolutely agree! Breeders are creating mutants, and not only that, with every puppy they create, they are creating lifelong suffering! Why can't people just adopt unwanted animals? Millions of perfectly good pets have been killed because people want designer pets... All of the shelters near me have dogs that I can’t rescue due to strict housing breed bans. My neighbor had to lie about her miniature pincher’s breed (which shouldn’t even be on the list as they are not the same as a Doberman). The shelters are full of “bull and terrier” breeds and those are prohibited in public housing. And the shelters have strict adoption requirements for them like “no children” and “no other pets”. We gave up on shelter dogs and opted for saving a bunny from becoming potential snake food.

Agreed!!! Maybe in the meantime, those who find it cute that their brachycephalic dog startles themselves awake snoring (or brachycephalic dog breeders) should get a dose of karma and get sleep apnea themselves!! I know I cannot sleep without my CPAP machine and be functional either so if we can decrease or eliminate those breathing issues in dogs, it would be great.

Agreed, I’m afraid the same thing is happening with Chihuahuas, my grandma has two apple head Chihuahuas, a mother and her daughter, from a breeder (idk who the breeder was) and I don’t know if it could be considered a puppy mill or not but the daughter is extremely messed up. Her snout is very short, her eyes bulge almost completely out of their sockets, and her forehead is giant. She also isn’t very intelligent and has already had various medical issues involving tracheal collapse despite only being a few years old, although she is probably extremely inbred

I feel so sorry for these flat face breeds. I'm not a fan of pure breeds period. I've had dogs all 60 years of my life and they've all been mutts with the exception of a bull terrier I adopted from a family who were fearful of him for their children. The bull terrier was the only one that required medical treatment other than check ups and vaccinations. He had demodectic mange and was allergic to grass and very aggressive towards adults and other animals. I loved him but he was a handfull, he and I required professional training ( not cheap) and expensive medical care. I don't think I'll take in a pure breed again. Give me a big sweet mutt any day.

I'm reminded of an article I saw a while ago. It was about a study done in the UK showing that among 10,000 pugs tested, the genetic diversity was equivalent to roughly 50 individuals. To me, the breed is a lost cause. Even with reform I just don't see brachy breeders today ever coming to their senses and understanding the true gravity of the situation.

I've seen data that suggest it could be as low as 30 unique individuals. If they aren't willing to crossbreed to introduce new genetics, the breed has to go. Same thing happened with king charles spaniels in Norway.

I say either ban the breeding of pugs, frenchies and English bulldogs or require that the unhealthy features of them be bred out. We’ve seen the Old English Bulldogge, which are much healthier, be recreated through crossbreeding. Perhaps pugs and Frenchies could be crossbred to be healthier and perhaps it could be made mandatory to only breed the healthier ones without the unhealthy features? Perhaps they should ban the breeding of modern English bulldogs and only allow the breeding of the Old English Bulldogges?

Karen Becker is widely regarded by the veterinary profession as a dangerous and harmful quack, though most veterinarians aside from her are too professional to say that directly. Most of her advice directly contradicts general medical consensus and has little to no research backing. She uses fear, emotional manipulation, and attacks on the veterinary profession as a whole to persuade people to buy into her arguments (and her commercial products). I would not put any store in anything she claims nor, frankly, give her the time of day. If you want science based, reputable opinions on anything covered in the book, there are so many better, less scummy sources out there.

I have a 1+ year pug girl. Very active and playful. I can't say that she suffers, that is not the case at least for now. Yes she can overheat so I don't go to the walk with her when there is temp above 30-31 Celsius. I talked to a vet and he confirmed that problems with breathing happen and there is some surgery that can help but it can't help in every case and is not cheap. Also she has perfect weight because I don't overfeed her. So...yea problems with pugs can happen it is not a myth but as far as I understood they happen not super often. Most pugs live normal lives and live more then 10-12 years even, if you don't overfeed them, don't overheat them and if you visit vet from time to time and give them good dog food. But you need to be aware that pugs need some special treatment. Just don't think that pugs are miserable mutants that all suffer from young age. It is not THAT bad.

He is a great dog, though lacking in so many respects from "a proper pug". ( His gain, I would say ) But, the biggest problem is heat. Any heat at all and the consequences are almost immediate. So many people like to talk about the 'smile' in these breeds; it is a sign of real physical distress. I really hope more people will educate themselves about this, because it just seems so cruel to encourage it.

There are those of us out there that intentionally adopt the ones that need extra care. My rescue, Augy was a Frenchie Mix who was diabetic and blind. He had 10 years with me… and I gave him insulin shots twice a day. I gave him a life of live. Now I have a Pug….rescued from multiple try out homes. She and I will grow old together. (Tbh it's the best I hate pugs tails they look like a poop on their back and cause issues). He was 18months, we didn't pay for him. Since owning him we have neutered and he's had multiple teeth removed. All in all he's really healthy for a pug, keeps up with our bigger dogs. Snoring isn't too bad and he doesn't have an excessively long tongue which I'm sure helps. I don't think they should exist this way tho, I feel for him and wish he had a normal skull/head/muzzle. I have a purebred frenchton and he has a longer muzzle. I say this to say that there are some reputable breeders who are trying to make the breeds healthier. I hope the breed standards can be updated so health becomes the common practice, not the exception.

We need to ban the further breeding of pugs, need to cap the number of brachycephalic dogs. If you have to have this breed, at least rescue and adopt (a lot of them sadly end up in shelters), don't contribute to the breeding of these dogs.

When we adopted Dexter,we considered a pug…until I read into the breed. Dex is still special needs, for other reasons. You could not pay me to adopt one. After Dex I still want a small dog, but not any flat face breed. The conformation standard is animal cruelty, imo.

I wonder, if you could somehow get a properly breathing version of a pug, if it would be more on the average range for aggression. Maybe pugs don't go out of their way to do stuff including aggressive things because they are having a hard enough time just breathing while they stand still

So-called retro pugs are usually more athletic and outgoing personality wise, but they're usually crossed with a Chihuahua or a JRT. Their personality might just come from there.

@@kennikitty I agree with KennKitty... the only way to get a pug that can breathe normally is by cross breeding. I think Jack Russell's would be the perfect cross! But the female of that cross would need to be the Jack Russell, since pugs can't always give birth without having a C section.

I snore and have a cpap my wife insists i use to keep me from it. My 3 do not wake themselves, have no issues, and are the sweetest dogs ever. They have no eye problems and since we feed them correctly they are not overweight. The problem isn’t the breed, it’s the owners. Sleep apnea ….. as weight is increased outside, so happens inside. Can make a huge difference if your pug is not overweight. Not small difference, HUGE. SAME WITH PEOPLE.

Flat faced dogs have apnea and other breathing problems because the length of their soft palate is the same as a dog of the same size who is not flat faced. The only place all that extra soft tissue can fit is down the dogs throat. The uvula is the end of all that tissue and happens to fit neatly right into the airway. While the dog is awake, their muscle tone holds the uvula up, but when they're asleep, the muscles relax, and down it goes. Extra weight doesn't help, but it's not the primary cause of apnea in brachyocephalic dogs. I would also argue that the problem is not the breed or the owners. It's the breeders who continue to breed without paying attention to what traits they are over emphasizing. PS, I had apnea when I was overweight, too. But I lost the weight.

I totally get what you are saying and why you are saying it. It hurts my heart tho because I love the Pug breed so much. There have been 4 in my family. My daughter had 1 and we had 3, we have 2 now. Boogie was 13 when he passed and Charlie was 10 or 11. The reason for their passing didn't have anything to do with them being flat faced. But Boogie did have a few issues over the yrs because of it. My problem with doing away with flat faced breeds where are we going to find other breeds that have their same loving funny personality. And don't all breeds have their own kind of health issues? I'm asking honestly. I'm this doesn't sound argumentative. I really appreciate your opinion.

all breeds have their own health issues, some just severely more than others. pugs are the absolute worst when it comes to health issues, buying one and promoting the breeding of more dogs doomed to a life of suffering should be illegal

Pugs are no better than any other breed in terms of personality. In fact, us in vet med know that pugs tend to be snappier and harder to work with than many other breeds. If you adopted any other puppy and raised it yourself, it would be just loving and fun as any pug, with none of the suffering. Just because a pug didn't die as a result of its deformities, doesn't mean it wasn't suffering. These animals are able to hide so, so much from us humans. While it's true no breed is without issues, the same could be said for humans. There's no human bloodline that is immune to all human ailments. Why should we expect dogs to be any different? If you truly want to avoid genetic disease, your best bet may honestly be to avoid purebred dogs entirely. The only way purebred lines are able to maintain specific and often exaggerated features is through countless generations of inbreeding, which is why so many breeds have multiple breed specific issues. Pugs are some of the MOST INBRED dogs in the world to this day. A study done in the UK showed that 10,000 pugs had the genetic diversity of about 50 individuals. The breed is a lost cause and requires MAJOR reform if anyone wants to perpetuate it ethically.
