For the second year in a row, the French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in America, this is according to a press release by the American Kennel Club. But did you know that despite their popularity, French Bulldogs are widely considered the single most unhealthy dog breed in America, often times costing their owners multiple thousands of dollars in veterinary bills? Let's talk about it.

One of the major issues he didn't mention here is their reproduction. Many Frenchies (and English Bulldogs) wouldn't even manage to mate naturally without human help, and if they do, the rate of c-sections is huge compared to most other breeds. Big heads don't go through the narrow birth canal, and small average litter size also shows problems. It's as if nature is doing it's best to reduce their numbers, but humans are finding ways around it to keep producing these dogs that would naturally likely go extinct.

@@JacobBartlett-mh4xy the breed itself has unhealthy features. They're breeding them for profit and demand. If they were responsible they'd only breed healthy breeds. At this point it's impossible to breed purebred frenchies, bulldogs, and pugs ethically because they're inherently unhealthy by nature of their features. Watch the video. The only way to breed them ethically would probably be to cross breed it with healthier breeds to delude their awful traits and change the breed fundamentally.

well snoring is actually pretty normal for humans, it can occur simply due to age or nasal congestion, and a lot of people who own dogs are unfortunately not super educated about their health until something goes wrong and as a result can assume that things that are normal for us are normal for them when they're not, so she most likely in my opinion wasn't thinking about it in a sadistic way. it was probably just a noise she got used to at night that then became annoying not to have- same happened to me with my busted-ass AC unit. clanks and buzzes and rattles like crazy but now i can't sleep without it it's good to educate people but it's not productive to deliberately interpret (or worse, disingenuously frame, which i certainly hope you're not doing) people's actions in the absolute worst possible way you can come up with lmao

My dad is unfortunately a backyard breeder, and he wants to get a frenchie to breed her and make money off of her. I keep trying to tell him to please not do it, but he doesn't take me seriously due to him being my dad. Years ago he was breeding English Bulldogs, and he was going to let them give birth on their own. I told him he can't do that because their birth canal can't handle their big heads, but he refused to listen to me. His dog almost died trying to give birth and got an emergency c-section. I didn't waste time saying "I TOLD YOU SO" because I was pissed. And honestly, he can barely afford to take care of these dogs anyway. Not to mention that he has this belief that dogs are meant to sleep outside, which has resulted in puppies dying from mosquito borne parasites. I wish there was an extremely strict law where a difficult to obtain license is required to breed animals, and the top focus needs to be health, but I know that will never happen because people love money too much.

One incident that haunts me forever is when my sister and I were on a short hike. We came across an owner with a limp French bulldog in her arms. She was in such a hysterical state that we opted to drive her to the vet ER because she wasn’t from the area we were worried about her ability to drive safely herself. The dog had likely passed by then or on the way to the vet. It was only 60 degrees out that morning and the dog was only 11 months old, all I can think is he suffocated due to the dusty trail and exertion.

Many nurses or doctors say to me “I’ve been thinking of getting a bulldog. . .”, and to that I always tell them not to. It’s very odd explaining to a nurse why something with a deformed body isn’t a good pet to own, I thought they would have understood that innately. The dogs looked so much better years and years ago, this is true for so many breeds, german shepards, chihuahuas, bull terriers etc…i dont get why we are breeding dogs with legitimate disabilities. Thank you. I would argue that public sentiment is finally starting to change because veterinarians and vet associations finally started speaking out publically a few years ago. You are the only people most owners or prospective buyers will trust over breeders and breed associations, and you are also most often the people who have access to the proper research. I’m 45 and I have been pretty deep in animal welfare and ethology since I was a big kid because I wanted so badly to become a vet myself, or, failing that, do ethology research. People will not listen to us garden variety dorks when we tell them something they don’t like, even if we offer to share our sources. It has been such a huge help that for example the national vet association in Denmark where I live, finally went out and shared a message warning about brachycephalic dog breeds especially a few years ago. The knowledge is slowly, slowly becoming mainstream around here, I feel. A lot of these breeds have wonderful personalities and temperaments and they deserve to be able to show that off without them being hampered by disabilities put in play on purpose ❤ Thank you for helping them when you get the chance.

This goes to the ignorance of people in general. Status rules over all, and these dogs are $3000 plus. Everyone knows how pricey they are. But the selective and inbreeding should also be well known at this point as are the risks of ownership. I'm amazed that people will front the price and then are SO IGNORANT of the health care costs associated with the breed. RESEACH YOUR BREED BEFORE YOU BUY!!!! I inherited a frenchie pup when my son in law bought him and lost interest. I took him straight to the vet for a full check up, as he was not exactly fitting the look of a typical French Bulldog. He's lean, long, and "buff" instead of the usual stocky shortened and humped looking Frenchies and is very athletic with a double coat. It turns out that that my guy is 3rd gen reversion breed from a programme started in the Netherlands to bring the original looking Frenchie back. His spine is perfect as are his joints, musculature, throat, teeth alignment and gut. We neutered him as his genetics showed that his offspring could have issues if he was bred with a non reversion breed. He's up for nasal surgery this week to widen his nostrils which is his only breathing problem. He has a good strong vocal bark which comes from deep in his chest. His vets were blown away when they met him for the first time as they were preparing with dread for the type of frenchies they usually treat. He did extremely well under anaesthetic with no issues at all. I got extremely lucky, as I had taken out a huge insurance policy for his medical care knowing that these dogs live a difficult life. I would ask people not to buy these dogs as the way they breed them to get the cutest traits and colours is absolutely wrong and extremely cruel.

I’m not a dog person, but i love reptiles, and there are plenty of similar problems with them. The most common one you hear about it the ball python pattern morph called spider and its related morphs. A neurological problem that affects their balance is tied to the morph, so all ball pythons with that morph have that neurological problem to some degree. They dont seem to suffer much if at all though, and are reportedly great eaters. It can look a lot like the snake is seriously ill in severe cases, but thats considered somewhat normal for those morphs. Its harder to tell how much reptiles are affected by breeding like this since they cant communicate much.

Leopard geckos have two morphs linked to neurological disorders: “enigma” and “white and yellow.” It’s been a while since I’ve learned about them, but I _think_ both gradually worsen throughout the gecko’s life, and do have a significant impact on quality of life. It’s really sad that we didn’t immediately stop breeding the morphs when the neurological disorders were discovered. I don’t care how pretty they are (white and yellow _is_ very pretty), if the animal has any sort of lowered quality of life then the morph needs to stop. :/ (From what I’ve heard, white and yellow does have some lines that have the disorder bred out. But a lot of breeders don’t care, and continue to breed the disordered ones.)

I have a Frenchie-English bulldog cross that we sort of stumbled in to owning. He's a lovely dog, stubborn as a mule and friendly to a fault but I could never have another one. He's about as healthy as a dog like him can hope to be. He's 6 and a half and has only had one slipped disc and developed a minor food intolerance that was a nightmare to diagnose but super easy to work around now. His breathing is mostly fine, he snores sometimes but that's about it and I could still never have another. Because of his smooshed face he's extra sensitive to either end of the temperature scale. I take him out for good long walks through woodlands and fields and I never see another bulldog when I do. He can walk for a couple of hours if the weather is just right, but 10 minutes of playing with another dog and I start getting worried he's going to pass out. I grew up with a border collie cross and seeing the difference in energy levels sometimes makes me feel like he's living a half life.

I am always amazed at how people are so willing to breed genetic defects in animals. The same defects in humans are seen as something to look away from, to grieve if we have a child born with, to try to cure or fix. Yet people purposefully breed animals with those genetic issues. If your baby was born with achondroplasia, you would be so sad, upset, anxious, fearful, as you pet your dachshund and Munchkin cat. If your child developed gigantism, you would take them in to get the problem corrected as you bring along your Great Dane. And if your child was born with a defect that affected their ability to breathe and caused them great pain and even paralysis, you would fund support to eliminate that defect from the genome or find a way to screen for the defect soon after conception because you wouldn't want a child to go through such suffering.

@@hunterv9259I think that the writer is stating something that is universal. You may disagree with the sentiment, action or attitude but the simple and brutal truth is that people do stare, and do think: there but for the grace of God my child. We are brought to value, accept, pity without condescension the persons born with various genetic errors in their body's construction. Every society on earth has looked on major deformities with horror and minor with distress. Pitying the persons whose child came into the world with the various birth defects. I think of my cousin whose firstborn had spina bifida. She cried so much with distress that she required medical help. Her entire life became her daughter's operations, conferences with doctors and rehab sessions and services to assist her daughter being able to cope with her condition. As a young child she learned to walk with braces and all seemed good. But with the teen years came obviously self esteem issues. This despite the fact she was beautiful like her mom. Because her condition worsened. She became incontinent needing to wear diapers. Followed by some strange neurological issue affecting her ability to walk and now she is wheelchair. One of her eyes now looks towards her nose when before they were normal. The poor girl has lost much of her freedom to face life!

Removing the features that makes the dogs suffer, by breeding versions that have a chance in life, is more than crucial. I know some breeders have already started, and I really hope that more will follow. Also, on the customer end, we need to realize that non-existent noses, constant panting and snoring, popped out eyes, non-existent or misformed tails, too short backs or legs and many more deranged physical features are not cute, but simply cause suffering for the animals you want to love so much.

I adopted a cat years ago (same as in my profile pic!) who had a very very short muzzle and experienced a lot of the same issues you outlined here in Frenchies. I learned so much today, thank you!!

Would love to hear an expert like yourself address the matter of cropping ears & docking tails of dogs. From everything I’ve read it’s so unnecessary, yet I meet people who absolutely insist it is vital for the dog’s sake. Some countries ban these practices, but in others veterinary organizations push to keep it legal. Is there some angle I’m missing?

More people need to be educated about brachycephalic dogs. As a vet tech for over 30 years, it’s disturbing how popular these breeds have become. Almost all frenchies have medical issues. Anyone buying a French bulldog, needs to know how much of an ongoing expense they will be for at least the next 10 years, and that insurance companies make their premiums much higher for these breeds. It’s very common for them to need surgeries to correct their breathing. On top of that, almost all have other ongoing medical conditions, especially skin and allergy issues. Skin and allergy medication is very expensive and none are a complete cure, these are life long managed conditions that usually require life long oral medication, medicated baths, special diets and even monthly injections. If you’re not rich, DON’T get a frenchie.

If you don't mind me asking, because google is too vague on me, how does one go about in obtaining health insurance for a pet?
@unsocialbutterfly5760
@unsocialbutterfly5760 Ай бұрын
@@CoquiDeBoriken There are many pet insurance companies. Many human health insurance companies offer pet insurance too, and a discount if you already have human health insurance with them. If you don’t like using Google, just pop into any vet clinic, and they will give you a list of companies and offer their advice on the best ones available where you live. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to thank you, your staff, colleagues, and other veterinary professionals. I know you guys don’t get enough thanks or appreciation for the important work that you do. I lost my childhood cat this year to what was likely a brain tumor. He developed seizure-like episodes where he would suddenly lose coordination and become very disoriented for around 5 minutes at a time. All he could do was lay down and meow in distress while we comforted him until the episode passed. He was almost 15 years old, and my family made the hard decision to let him go because the high risk of surgical complications and additional suffering was just not something we were willing to put him through as a well-loved and cherished senior family member.

Thank you for the factual info. My boxer is elderly & I had my heart set on a Frenchie. I do not want to contribute to perpetuating the inappropriate breeding by purchasing a Frenchie. Now that i know the stats for IVDD and OSA I will not purchase this breed. I was planning on getting pet insurance. It's just about the cost as it is the suffering of the poor animal. My boxer has had multiple medical issues that has cost me a fortune financially, but both of us in suffering. It's very hard to watch your animal suffer. Again. Thank you.

Please consider adopting from a shelter or rescue instead of buying. There are plenty of dogs and puppies out there for adoption who need homes, even pure breds.

Great video! I also need to add AVOID “long haired Frenchies” and “mini Frenchies”. The long haired Frenchies are a genetic nightmare (on top of what you already spoke about). Mini Frenchies also have worsened outcomes for all the problems you outlined. Shrinking a dog doesn’t mean the rest of their body parts went along for the ride.

It’s crazy to me how French bulldogs took over as the most popular breeds, even ahead of goldens and labradors which are the kinds of dogs my family has. Those kinds of dogs can walk and breathe properly and can live a happy life, but French bulldogs have so many problems and I’d be crushed to have a dog that may be sweet but is suffering their entire lives. It just shows that they’re popular to be trendy which shouldn’t be a thing because dogs are living breathing creatures who need care and not some accessory.

I remember when we got my puggle. It was an effort to get rid of the bag aspects of the pug, and it kind of worked. She was basically a beagle with a pug tail. Had a beagle snout and good teeth. Couldn't get away from the sleep apnea though, and she got terrible gastrointestinal issues and ended up dying from it when she did that common beagle thing where they get loose and run for miles. She ate something and just couldn't recover - it acted like poison and she passed away at the vet the next day. Since then, I'll never get tiny dogs. They slip away too easily and breeding info is terrible.

Thank you so much for this video. I hope this reaches the people who need to see it. I work at a pet vaccine clinic and all the time I see people trying to breed frenchies out of their backyard for a quick buck. I hope that those people and AKC breeders alike can learn about how many issues these dogs have can be persuaded to avoid breeding for these features and think twice before trying to make more of this breed as it stands now.

As someone who got stuck with a frenchie for a period of time (my dad's boss abandoned her and we were the onlu ones willing to take care of her giadria infection) i didnt even know a lot of these things. She had constant ear infections and the vets just told us it was because she didnt have floppy ears; when clearly its more complicated. And the spinal stuff? Yeesh. I already was never gonna get one again but i really appreciate this vifeo to seal the deal
