Hi again Gareth, here in China one of my neighbours was sending her son off to school each day with a very expensive Australian steak pie bought from a high-end supermarket in the city. I decided to try one, the Pukka reminds me of it very much. Took it home, heated it up, cut into it to find the majority of the filling was fresh air along with just 24g of meat! As I have my own micro-bakery I set to and produced pies guaranteed to contain at least 100g of the finest beef. I can sell these all day at less than half the cost of the Australian pie and with an excellent profit margin. Just goes to show what these large food conglomerates take or try to take from our pockets….

Controversial, but I like my pies with a tin of soup poured over. For example for a minced beef and onion I'd have heinz oxtail. Meat and potato I like pea and ham or baxters cock-a-leekie. It's a common thing in Preston (home of the butter pie btw) but my partner from Manchester thinks its minging. I think it's just free a gravy (or liquor if your a cockney) Some of my friends like a tin of heinz tomato with a cheese and onion but that's not a combo I like. What's your view on the matter?

Some clarifications: MSG is not harmful for the majority of people even at large quantities because glutamate is an amino acid found in many foods like tomatoes, meats and cheeses which makes it taste savoury. That’s why MSG is used as a flavour enhancer - because it contains glutamate. As for palm oil, it’s not harmful by itself but palm oil plantations need lots of land which means a lot of deforestation since palm oil is used in essentially everything. I’ve simplified quite a bit but hope it helps. Cheers

I've never had a Hollands pie, though the all-shortcrust pastry is very appealing to me. As for Pukka, I've always found them to have a rather large air-cavity inside which, considering their height, always makes me feel a little bit cheated - Growing up on the East London/Essex border I seldom encountered them as a youngster. Our local Chippies seemed to favour Peter's Pies (originally a Welsh company I seem to recall), which I always thought fine, especially the Chicken & Mushroom. As for the Morrison's pie, these are generally alright - Whenever I visit my young nephew (a Student) he invariably (and proudly) produces these for dinner, with crinkle-cut chips and baked beans, alongside a bottle of Chop Sauce (my own particular favourite). And I am very proud of him for it too! :)

The only place I see Holland's pies for sale is in freezer shops and supermarkets. Being from Kidderminster in the Midlands I moved up to Colne Lancashire in 1986, back in 1986 it was Hollands pies down the midlands as well as Lancashire , when did Pukka pies start to take over? p.s.always drive past Hollands in Baxenden lol! :-)

Having sampled a Morrisons pie fresh out of the oven in the store, I can recommend them.

It's a shame you don't have a Sainsbury's near you - at the time of filming I used to regularly buy Pukka pies from there and they were £1.00 each on offer. That would significantly help budget-wise :) Great review though 😁

If it helps pukka are often on special offer for a quid in asda and tesco .. love the pie 🥧 off video ... how about a curry off or them kind of stuff

Cheers, yes they can be picked up for a pound, cheers

dont forget that the pukka mince beef and onion is 231grams and the morrisons is 150 grams so the pukka is over half as big again. £1.65 for 231 grams makes the pukka at £1.07 for 150 grams not far off the morrisons. the hollan works out as the most expensive per gram
