Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) are out to retrieve a stolen suitcase. After they killed the stealer, they’re attacked by one of his friends who blindly shoots toward them but fails to hit them. Surprised to be unhurt, the hitmen quickly use this chance to retaliate.

What’s the movie Pulp Fiction about?
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction follows the mission of two hitmen, Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta), out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his next fight. Honey Bunny and Pumpkin (Tim Roth) are a couple of young lovers and small-time thieves who decide they need a change of venue. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating motion picture adventure that both thrills and amuses.

This is the first time I've seen this clip in HD as I've only had it on DVD before, and I've only just noticed how Jules's suit is all smart and clean, and Vincent's is all grubby and wrinkled. I love how it's a nod to Vincent's really chill don't-give-a-damn attitude about mostly everything. Dude shot Marvin in the face and he's still like "Chill, it was an accident, man..." xD

WOW, very impressive catch. I've seen this movies an unreal amount of times and I haven't noticed the suites at all. It's similar to how in one of the previous scenes - when they are taking the guns out of the trunk - Jules checks the safety on his gun while Vincent doesn't.

One thing that's interesting that i just noticed (besides the bullet holes already being in the wall), is that the bullet holes are directly behind Jules and Vincent. The way the gun went off on Vincent and hit Marvin in the face was the moment when Vincent was questioning God’s intervention earlier. It makes me wonder if Quentin did that on purpose as a way of portraying God getting back on Vincent for being blasphemous 🤔
@ReasonMakes
@ReasonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
I think Quentin was just making a point that chaos is chaotic. Death can happen randomly and instantly. From that we can go further and conclude that many things we like to think we have control over, we don't. We don't have control over whether we live or die. It can happen randomly. We don't even have the control we think we do over our own impact on others.
@arcasolar1969
@arcasolar1969 3 жыл бұрын
The unconscious of Vincent betrayed him. The own Jules explained unintentionally when he told Ringo that "when motherfuckers get scared, that's when motherfuckers get accidentally get shot". Although, Vincent wasn't entirely wrong, as the Holes were already on the wall. The more rational explanation is that it was prop gun inside the own movie, being that interesting way of breaking the 4 *wall* by the director, who consider himself as the god intervening on his own movie.

Well in context, Marvin was the one who intentionally posined and destroyed his brothers, therefore he was dealt the wrath of the lord, through the tyrany of evil that Vincent was stuck in and he eventually receives his punishment for this act as well later on.

Gold standard for how to use a coincidence to tell a better story. These days contrivances and coincidences are used too much to simply push the story forward to the next scene here its aknowledged, argued over and pushes a character to rethink their life.
@JaybayJay
@JaybayJay 3 жыл бұрын
None of the bullets were meant for Vincent, they were all aimed at Jules. 3 went past him, the 3 miracles were all center mass. That's why Vincent didn't get the message, because it wasn't meant for him, he wouldn't have heard it anyways. Marvin was pretty stupid too, staring down the barrel of a gun and not even moving away, begging to be shot.
@davidbrandel4128

I think what Tarantino is telling the audience is that the message was for both of them. Jules heeds the message, and lives, while Vincent ignores said message and pays the ultimate price.

@@Stevo935 I'm saying the CHARACTER shot blanks. There were holes in the wall BEFORE he came in blasting... So where did his bullets go? Jules believed that God spared them. So there are three options. 1. The character had blanks in his gun. 2. He had bullets and God made them not hit anything. 3. It was a mistake on set and they forgot to edit it out. The holes were in the wall before the gun went off which kind of discounts Jules going over to the wall, and looking at the holes thinking that God saved him.
@EliteDB21
@EliteDB21 2 жыл бұрын
@cecilvansciver4309 id say number 3 is by far the most likely. And not even neccesarily that they "forgot to edit them out" but that they just didnt care. The further back in time you go the more examples youll find of that. Granted, this is the mid 90s, not the 70s or even 80s but it was still well before HDTVs and the fullblown digital/social media era, and its a really quick shot etc

The fact that to this day, 30 years later we dont know how they survived getting shot at and that they theorized it was either a freak occurrence ( Vincent) or a miracle ( Jules ) really is a testament to this legendary film. I mean, who knows how they survived, for all know they didnt realize that the gun would only shoot blanks. Or maybe the bullets were real and they were diverted away from both Jules and Vincent. We dont know, all we do know is that this scenario, as far as the movie is concerned is a mystery and i would be so ok with no answers being provided because perhaps we were always meant to never get a direct answer as to how they survived but still its one of those things that make Pulp Fiction so good even 30 years later
