The UK's best selling car has just received its mid-life update & I was lucky enough to check it out at Pye Motors Ford in Kendal!
Being based on the Fiesta platform, the Puma is now Ford's smallest new car, being truly a small SUV. The exterior design has remained very similar, something we have seen on rivals facelifts such as the Juke & the T-Roc, as small SUVs have proved very popular and as with those SUVs, the Puma was well designed & stylish in the first place. The interior has seen the main changes now featuring the SYNC4 system in a 12" screen, facing TOWARDS to driver!
The trims and engines offered are a smaller range, helping the Puma to stay similar in cost to the pre-facelift model. I drove the ST-Line finished in 'Solar Silver' including the 'Comfort Pack' and featuring the 125PS 1.0 Ecobosst with the 6-speed manual transmission, now the only engine available as a manual.

Absolutely nailed this review Sam - well done 👏🏻❤ as everyone says it’s so well presented, thought out and informative. The improvements to the Puma are small but substantial, the interior tech upgrades in particular are really impressive. Can’t believe Ford have got that much power from the 1 litre in the ST 😮 the figures are impressive but I’d be concerned about how reliable it will prove in the long run - especially the way ST’s are usually driven 😂😂 time will tell I guess 😊 Simply fantastic work as always Sam 🙂

Thanks Richard, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the interior is the main improvement on the Puma with the new screen & digital dials, it feels much more modern. They have been quite brave offering the ST as a 1.0, however as you say it’s very powerful just unfortunately not available as a manual anymore. As the new generation of EcoBoost engines don’t have a wet timing belt, it should prove more reliable than pre 2019 Ford vehicles, (providing it is well looked after!) Thanks again 😊

Such an informative and detailed review! I currently own one of the last of the st-line mk8.5 Fiestas, 125ps auto in Agate black, and it's also a 3 door which is a massive plus for me. I've warmed to the Puma and its curvy looks, and if anything were to happen to the Fiesta, or I were to change it (but I don't think I would) I'd consider buying one as its replacement. I do think the facelift was due, and the screen is 100% better than the original. Well done on delivering a great video!

I recently purchased a facelift puma,i had the automatic after 30 years of driving manual cars, now missing the manual,im surprised you didn't mention all the new EU, safety features, that drive you nuts, good video.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video Kevin! Surprisingly I didn’t notice any of the safety features bugging me in the time I had with the car, maybe just the speed warning going 31 in a 30 😅. The manual is great, but most say once they’ve gone to auto they wouldn’t go back, it might just take a while for you to adjust 👍🏻

Do you have to buy an optional pack just to get wireless phone charging? It looks like Ford just continue to make savings by reducing material quality, removing features and splitting what should be standard features across numerous additional option packs.

drive the 22 model st line, chassis, steering, 6 mt gearbox and clutch are all on point. But Prefer the 155bhp variant for that little extra punch 👊 esp for motorway overtaking.

Lovely car! Yes the manuals are excellent, it is a shame you can’t have the higher output with it now, however there are plenty of pre-facelift cars like yours with that nippier engine.

Thank you Chris! Yes it has a unique interior but I do like it, the screen is in a much better position now and I don’t mind the vents where they are, but I get it’s not for everyone! It certainly isn’t as wacky of a layout as Peugeot’s 2008 though 😅

Having owned a couple of the more recent Fords, I'd have concerns about longer term quality and longevity. On my Focus, the rubber door seals became detached on both the front and rear doors. There are known ongoing issues with the 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine etc... Sure, these cars have massive "new" appeal, but don't seem to take longer term use too well...

Just got rid of my 2020 Focus Estate due to quality issues. Missing paint, cracking/broken switch gear, scratchy plastic, rattly fly wheel and to top it off, engine oil issues....all within 20k. Glad I got rid of it, never again! Gone to Kia now, quality is a night and day difference in favour of the Kia, plus 7 year warranty.

To be fair Roy you couldn’t be more wrong! I’ve been a subscriber to Carcode for a while and there’s nothing lacking in Sam’s knowledge of cars! I’d wager Sam could tell practically every car salesman I’ve ever met more about the product they are selling than they know…. He gets about to a heck of a lot of industry events and has been driving long enough to tell a good car from a bad one! Heck I consider myself to be a huge car nerd (having owned over 30 cars since I started driving 20 odd years ago, and driven more models besides than I can remember) yet Sam usually enlightens me on some interesting fact about the car he’s reviewing. Just because Sam doesn’t resemble Tony Bastable doesn’t mean he has insufficient knowledge or experience of cars and driving…

It is quite similarly priced in the small SUV segment, 3 years isn’t the longest warranty but it matches that of Volkswagen, Nissan & Vauxhall. You can also get an extended warranty too 😊

Your loss - the review is absolutely spot on. Sam knows way more than many of the reviewers on KZbin about the motor industry and his knowledge of the new car market is excellent. Just because he doesn’t resemble Chris Goffey doesn’t mean his knowledge is lacking!! 😂
