If the pump is electrically driven and has an efficiency of 50%, what is the power required? What type of pump would you use and of what material would you construct the pump and pipe? Need to know how long it runs for, do you want e.g. 3m^3 in 1 hour or over 24 hours. Then you need to know the difference in height from pickup to drop off. Then need to know the pipe diameter and roughness and length to calculate the resistance. Then put this all together and you know the size of the pump needed

What is the relation between Head Pressure and Pump Power? I did some arrangements to all your formulas and I got that Head Pressure (new)=Head Pressure (old) x [Pump Power (new)/Power Pump (old)]^2/3 (here, 2/3 is 0.6666667). But from another equation relation between Power (P)=Force (F) x velocity (v) and Pressure (p)= Force (F)/Cross Section (A), which A x v = Q we got that Head Pressure = [(Pump Power (P)/Flow Rate (Q)) x efficiency (n)]. Here, the Head Pressure is directly linear with the Pump Power. Did I miss something?

These laws assume that the pump efficiency is constant across all regions of the pump curve; which of course is not true. The accuracy of these calculations will vary from pump model to pump model. Even using the same model but altering the impeller size can cause huge variation. In practice, I would never use the affinity laws and instead try to interpolate between two points for the best results.

May I ask, is the liquid flow same as (or at least close to) the flow rate at the pump nameplate? Eg. the design nominal head is 30m, and nominal flow rate at 45m3/h, let say in the actual system the head loss is only 20m and the pump is oversized, will the flow rate higher than this design flow rate of 45m3/h or still around this value? We don't change the AC frequency and other stuff.

How to convert motor H min in metre to frequency
@benisleviosa6 жыл бұрын
hey I have a query -- i've been watching your videos from 3 phase to transformers to invertors to induction motors to pumps... and if the frequency/Hz affects the rpm of the motor thus the rpm of the pump... would a 60hz supply cause 3600 rpm? if a pump has an rpm of 1200 or 1300 like in this, do they have a controller?
@lutosronnie6 жыл бұрын
A controller affects rpm by changing the frequency of the motor. If the frequency is not altered and is at line frequency (60Hz for USA and 50Hz for Europe), the motor rpm is determined by the number of motor poles. RPM = 120* frequency/No. of poles

@TheConfuciusPanda5 жыл бұрын
Convert you 161 lift (head) to a pressure measurement. I don't work in imperial, but if a pump is able to produce 20 meters of lift my discharge pressure would be approximately 2 bar.

Imagine an standard 3 phase irrigation pump of 20HP... if I want to use only photovoltaics panels, to dimension the PV plant I need to know how much pannels I require to fulfill the irrigation hours... with a known solar profile per Watt, at each day hours the PV panels through the Inverter will deliver a different electric power, which need to be converted into pumped flow for a defined pressure head...¿how you could convert this electric power at fix voltage into pump flow at fix head? (It will depend in the number of PV panels and irrigation requirement, so it is not trivial at all).... hope you can review it to help the spread of PV pumping with standard equipement (current PV pumps are small and with no spare parts market, so aren't recomended by irrigation designers)
@EngineeringMindset2 жыл бұрын
Well it would be better to store the solar energy in a battery bank and then use an inverter to power the pump. The inverter will let the pump run at the required speed and head pressure and it will pull as much power as it needs. The the pump doesn't need to run only when it's sunny
@whatitmeans2 жыл бұрын
@@EngineeringMindset actually that is part of the economic assessment you have to do to size the project, since batteries are one of the expensive parts of the system, and PV pannels are cheaper nowadays related to the inverter, you consider first to oversize the ammount of panels and lose energy of the daily peak in favor of more hours of energy production during the day (current inverters support near 50% of oversize in DC peak power/ máx AC power). A few months ago I tried to do the assesment for a small high-flow pump to move water between two ponds, were the farmer use a gas pump and he was wanting to know if PV could be cheaper on a 5 yrs payback analysis... considering irrigation in farms runs on the month with higher availability of sunlight, I started the analysis but I get stack since as electrician I wasn't able to properly model the pump running with a variable power electricity input.. was the first time I saw affinity laws, but they end to be not enough information to made the output power-or-flow graph vs electric power input for a fixed head... give it a second thought, surely it will be a good video.. also related papers I found were highly misterious on how the closed the connection about the input power and output power for the induction electric motor and the variable frequency drive.
@EngineeringMindset2 жыл бұрын
It's not so difficult to calculate, you'll need the pump data from manufacturer, some will provide with vfd, if not you find a vfd that will fit and see what the losses will be from the manufacturers chart. At full load the vfd losses will be highest. Once you know maximum values calculate run time and then you'll know how much power and for how long, then you can size your battery bank and then your solar array needed to capture that much, plus a safety factor. There's other things like ram pumps which require no electricity. They could use anaerobic digestor from farm waste. Wind.

If 1 pump is 3 bar and I run s second water pump also 3 bar what is the pressure is it 3 or 6
@TheConfuciusPanda5 жыл бұрын
You need to clarify the configuration of your system. Are the pumps in series or in parallel? From explanation sake; let's imagine a pump which operates at 3 bar producing a flow rate of 5 l/s. If you operate in series; pumping from one pump directly into the suction side of another, the flow rate of this arrangement would be 5 l/s at 6 bar. The discharge pressures are summed, the flow rate remains constant. If you operate in parallel, two pumps pulling from the same tank and discharging into the same line, the flow rate would be 10 l/s and the pressure 3 bar. If you're unsure about different pump arrangements look up some diagrams.
