Lou and Arnold? They shared and share freely. Were and are very generous people. I'd like to include "The Barbarian Brothers" Peter and the late great David Paul. "Pumping Iron" (the movie) gave birth to the feared/famous Barbarian Brothers (twin brothers looks of movie idols). Peter Paul the mind of a studio executive by the time Peter was 20. The brains of the Barbarian Bros. Their true driving force. Work ethics like you couldn't/wouldn't believe. Great minds - also a huge INTEREST in the mind as a training tool. great that Lou came out of Brooklyn - it's a completely different mindset. i.e. "West Coast vs. East Coach" bodybuilding philosophies. At least back then it was. Arnold as script doctor did tremendous script/character work on PUMPING IRON. i.e. Arnold basically had the last rewrite. Thus humor taking a big role in the project/documentary. Lou such a key component/character/story element.

People are reading way too much into this. It gets overlooked that Pumping Iron was a docudrama, not a documentary. Like the scene where Waller steals Katz's shirt. They did that to build up the theatricality of a Katz/Waller rivalry. They did the same thing with Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno.

Arnold has been invited for breakfast with Lou. He asserts that they are trying to psych him out, but really he is playing games with Lou, having little digs at him. It culminates in Arnold saying that Lou got his timing wrong for the contest, and that he would have been in much better shape in a month's time, before saying that it wouldn't matter as he would still be improving his own physique. Essentially, breaking down Ferrigno before they even hit the stage.

Whenever you're around your parents you need to be respectful, you'll always be at a disadvantage psychologically because you can't be yourself. Yes Arnold was one of the greatest body builders of all time but I don’t think he should have won at the embarrassment of others. I don’t appreciate the way he treated Lou . We have seen this in other sports like boxing. Ali did the same things against his opponents. If you believe you can truly win against another man than so be it. Bullying has no place in life and Lou was bullied because of his ear infection and the way he talked. In my opinion Lou Ferrigno was a gentle Hulk and I will always remember him for the tv show as Hulk. As a kid I thought he was really larger than life

By now Arnold was already bored with training for the Olympia. He'd lost 50lbs to play in "Staying Hungry" and only was able to put 35 back on. Arnold was particularly cruel as he communicated with Lou's Dad instead of Lou telling him to "help him" read Lou needs help. Arnold could have won it easily for quite a few more years; he simply moved on to other realms to conquer. Arnold never firgot his roots and sponsors the Arnold Classic the Biggest show in Bodybuilding.

I was an amateur bodybuilder for 10 years and never competed but for 10 years I trained with the other guys in the gym who competed and I can tell you is not easy at all! You have to love bodybuilding to be faithful to it! Bodybuilding is a 24/7 deal. It's not lifting heavy weights in the gym for 4 hours but also you have to have a strict diet and you have to make sure you sleep at least 8 to 10 hours a night to grow muscles. Winning the Mr. Olympia competition is a huge achievement but more than once is out of this world! The life of a bodybuilder is hard and sometimes lonely because you can not go out partying or stay up all night and also you have to eat at least 6 meals a day with at least 50% protein each meal to maintain and grow muscle mass!

Turns out Lou obeyed Arnold, he did retire that year because father threw him out and disowned him for placing 3rd. He should have stuck with it and won the following year's Olympia (unless Matt was financially supporting his son in which case he would have had to get work after he was disowned.) Father and son had a difficult relationship.

Arnold didn't need to psych Lou out to win here. The game isn't won at the breakfast table a few days before the match, cmon people. The game is won in the months before during your prep. Lou wasn't ready to win. LIke Arnold said, the timing wasn't right. Bodybuilding is not like some performance where you could go out on one night and overperform and beat a superior opponent. Arnold had a better body. Lou probably needed a few more months of training to get there. Everyone knew who the winner was before the match. Arnold had it won, that's why he's so confident. Confidence comes from KNOWING you're going to win because you put in the work and you're better.
