Hi, Thank you for sharing all your videos. I am new to the Berner world! I hope I am doing everything correct for my new boy, Scout. He is 12 weeks old. I have questions about his food. I am wondering what vitamins and supplements I should be giving Scout. I watched to feed and supplement video you did. Just want to make sure I understand correctly! Should I be giving him probiotics, fish oil and vitamin c? Thank You!!

I have a 9 week old coming Tuesday and have been watching your videos. Cant tell you how helpful they have been to watch. I bought a leash,collar and harness. When should I start to use them? If you get time and let me know your opinion I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Happy to help! I hope your breeder will be a great resource for you and support you and your puppy for the life of the dog! I wouldn't use the harness. A limited slip collar is perfect, harnesses are uncomfortable on puppies and encourage pulling.

if you have to leave the house for example to go to work or go out for a couple hours should you put your puppy back into the crate after sleeping in the crate all night or should you create a dog pen inside the house so they can move around more? Or should you just leave them free to roam the house?

I am a fan of a dog pen. If it is only for 10-20 min I'll use the crate with a yummy chew to reinforce that it is fun. But you are right, I don't want my puppy or dog in a crate all day and all night.

Stacy, Do you recommend a Gastroplasty on a Berner? We have not added a Berner to our family yet but are on the wait list. I am preparing and learning as much as I can before she comes, but bloat seems scary!

I think you will need to talk with your breeder about a gastropexy to see if bloat runs in the pedigree. I recommend doing it with a spay/neuter after a dog 18 months-2 years old.

Hi Stacy - can you make a video on how to react when they are eating something they are not supposed to? When we are outside to potty train - she's always putting branches and grass in her mouth and gets aggressive when we take it out of her mouth. She does know "leave it" but wants to keep chewing items. I think she is trying to exercise independence??

Sure! I will work on this video. I have found that rewarding them for coming and ALWAYS having yummy treats on me to trade for the contraband item is most successful and promotes the good trusting relationship with my dogs.

Hi Stacy - I have 2 month old - almost 3 month BMD puppy - do you recommend any joint or immune supplements to put into their food. I'm currently using NuVet on recommendation from the breeder. Also - when would you recommend adding fish oil to their food?

NuVet is useless. Your breeder is making money off your purchases. I would recommend GlycoFlex Classic for green lipped muscle, I start fish oil at 4 months along with Vitamin C.

Do they have to sleep in a crate in the same room as you? We are bringing home a puppy in a week- we have a cat that’s never been around dogs so we plan on very slow, controlled introduction. the cat is already used to sleeping in my room. Not sure if a puppy in a crate in my room will make the cat situation worse.

The crate will allow the cat to have space from the puppy, it should be just fine. The bedroom is by far the best place for the crate for many reasons, you can hear the puppy stir to go out, you know if there is anything troubling happening, Bernese need to be with their people , the puppy has never been alone before and to isolate it would be devastating to you puppy and put you back in socialization/trust.

So my wife and I bought a Berner from a breeder who wasn't on the websites. (We didn't know about Berner Gard) Should we be concerned that our 3 puppy is way smaller that smoulder? If i had to guess, and judging by this video she looks like she is only barely 2 months. Is it common for a BMD to be way smaller than this?

Have you had your puppy to the vet yet? There are bigger and smaller puppies than Smolder, but she is about average size for the breed. Is there anything else health wise to be concerned about? There are many backyard breeders and puppy mills who breed dogs who don't match the Bernese Mountain Dog standard which creates Bernese who don't really look as much like the breed as they should. It doesn't mean they are less of a dog, just don't quite look like a Berner. I would be more concerned with mom and dad's health clearances. I'm glad you know about Bernergarde now and can create a profile for your puppy and log her health into the database throughout her life.

I wanna know if there is any way to know that the puppy your are getting is very unlikely to have a genetic propensity to diseases. And that they are likely to live at least 10 years. Are breeders getting rid of the defects in this breed?

In some ways yes, in others no. Bernergarde.org is the Berner Health database that you can verify a site or dam (And grandparents, great grand parents, aunts, uncles, progeny, etc.) have health clearances, ages and causes of deaths so not to double up on known issues. Good breeders research this database when selecting sites for litters and share data openly. The breed genetics are such that cancer is very prevalent, there are gene markers being developed but still in the research phase. There are many backyard breeders who don’t do these basic health clearances (hips, elbows, heart and eyes), I would avoid them, buyers need to hold breeders to a higher standard.
