this helped me so much! I have a question I just got a maltipoo and I have having a hard time training her. I sectioned off a place for her in a corner and put her little bed on one side and then a pee pad on the other, when I do she lays on the pee pad and goes to sleep...is that okay or is that making her think its okay to sleep there? Hello I just came across your channel and wanted to ask a few question, I got a new puppy and he is about 2 months and we have the divider in his cage and puppy pads also, he will tear up the puppy pads and poop and pee all over the area in the cage and the space it not that big and I am scared if I make it to small wear he can just stand and lay I thing he will just lay in his poop and pee. Any advice on what we can do. When we are home he stays out and he is very good at not doing anything in the house and let us know when he has to go out. Thanks LaChanda

If yes, how do you solve this issue, as crate is supposed to be their “Home”? Also for Home owners that may go for a long time, what do you suggest to ensure potty training is effective? I bought some inexpensive linoleum, comes in a roll. My 12 x 8 foot piece cost $47.00. I put it over laminate flooring. Wouldn't work over carpeting, UNLESS you put down a piece or two of plywood on top of the carpet first, and then the vinyl. My puppy is a Golden Retriever, 8 weeks, and has no idea what a puppy pad is. I put the puppy pads in a hard plastic kids pool that I cut an entrance opening in, but she oblivious to it. Doesn't have a care in the world about where she goes. Going to try you "cover everything with puppy pads suggestion. I'm going to have to crate train, but I am away 9 hours a day. Can my dog ever wait that long, or will I need to hire a dog walker?

We all have different methods in training puppy's. When your puppy is eight weeks my opinion is start crate training immediately, We got are GS at 7 weeks, the puppy within a few days was used to the crate. He did cry but it did subside within a few days. My puppy never urinated in the kennel.he should know that's his place for sleep, not the place to potty. The problem I have with putting a puppy pad where he sleeps is that ur giving him the ok to go to the restroom where he sleeps and it will be harder to get him to go outside.My puppy was potty trained by eight weeks. So my puppy is coming to be my emotional support animal and I have never potty trained a dog before because my current dog hated the indoors so she lives outside so we never had to be potty trained. At college I only go to class for 50 minutes and then I come back for 50 minutes. I have 3 classes Monday Wednesday and Friday and then Tuesday I have one class so I'm good that day but Thursday I have 2 classes and one is 2 hours long and every day I have practice but I think my coach will understand and let me take him out there but I'll have to chain him up because he might potty on the track or football field and that won't be fun. I have friends that would be more than happy to walk him around. Do you have any tips for dorm rooms?

The problem is your young puppy will go inside whether you are there or not...so if you have to leave for a long period of time, you have no choice because with a dog under 12 weeks, you will come back to a mess if you are gone more then 3/4 hours (a lot of pups anyway) so yes, it takes longer to teach outside, but not because of the set up, because you aren't taking the dog out every few hours. This is more of a preventative to major messes when you get home

I wee wee pad trained my poodle when we lived in an apartment in New York. When we moved to a house with a yard he immediately gave up the pads and chose the outside, even going to the door and scratching at it to get my attention.

Maybe you already spoke about other ways to deal with this issue which I personally always found of a great help. Before any technique I suggest anyone willing to enjoy the immense added value to your lifes a dog will give you with his unconditional love to start grabbing a good book to help define what adopting/buying a puppy means, what breed might suit you best and if you, yes you human, have the requisites to own a dog. You have no time? Go for a goldfish. You get mad cleaning some pee? Goldfish! After being sure a puppy is what you want, get ready to do some constant, balanced, coherent effort. First things to know are: a puppy will be able to hold his pee/poo approx 1hr more each month. If you can let him stay with mum & bros for 3 months you will let his mum do a complete inbreeding and you will take home a socialized puppy who's learned his best with his bio-family. It will also mean that 3months=3hrs, you know what you can expect from him, he's just not grown enough to be able to hold it for longer. A puppy will generally need the bathroom shortly after having eaten, played and slept. Make sure to take him where you want him to pee in these moments and give him 5-10min. Don't yell at him in case of accidents. If you catch him in the act (not 10 seconds later, IN the act) just make some noise (like clapping) to interrupt him by surprise (don't scare him!) and take him right to the place you want him to pee/poo. Again give him 5-10min and if he pees where you like let him finish but immediately after reward him with some treats he likes best. Not the usual ones: the "good pee/exquisite ones" And not one only 1 but 3. You want him to think: "WHAO! If I pee/poo here I get Lord food! Looks great!" Take him straight to the place you want him to use as bathroom when adult but if you see him peeing on the puppy diaper when inside remember to reward him big time! Being as much precise as possible will speed up the process but remember always 2 things: he is a puppy and needs to learn, if you get nervous, frustrated, yell, shout or punish the puppy he will think: "Listen my dear human, I'm trying my best, but if you get mad and scare me like hell well, dunno what your problem is, but while I hope you get help, I'll do my best to hide when peeing if it's so shocking for you, are we fine like this?" I'm sure you can understand by yourselves that this would be a fantastic way to make things worse. It is a bit of a pain I know very well but if you really do your best to catch the point you will be impressed how intelligent they are and how short will all this be if made it correctly. You too lazy for all this? Goldfish!

KatieisFF Get the Richell Paw Trax Mesh Training Tray. It's the only thing that kept our corgi puppy from getting the pads out despite trying his hardest. The outside has chew marks all over it but he never got them out. It's $28 on chewy.com.

We have a Shih Poo Bichon mix puppy (THE CUTEST PUPPY EVER) and he'll go on the pad upon waking, but he has yet to successfully poop on it :/ Today, I've started confinement training to see if that would help. I have a pee pad on the opposite side of his crate/kennel with a small area in between for play and his water/food bowls. Can we still take him out occasionally to play with him and let him run around for a bit, or should he stay in his area until fully house trained? And is this method any better or worse than CRATE training, where the puppy stays in a small crate until he has to pee? I'm new to puppy ownership and I want to do my best to properly train this little sweetheart, and not confuse him :) We've had him just out in our living room (in a small area in the corner) with his bed and kennel, etc but with all the accidents, I started confinement for him...and now he just looks at me like I'm the meanest person in the world :( He's a smart little guy though, so I'm hoping this phase passes quickly!

If you don't crate train a puppy and they go off of pads, the problem isn't learning to go outside...that often comes instinctually, the problem is they don't learn how to hold it because they are used to being able to go at will so they never learn to hold it.

You may need to fill the extra space in the crate. I used a shoe box to take up the extra space. I was told their sleeping area should be no more than twice their size. Otherwise, they will poop at the other end of the crate, then move away from it and go back to sleep. Good luck.

Hey I'm really having problems potty training my Pomeranian terrier. She's 4mths. I have a crate with two pans one to sleep (with a blanket) and one to potty( with newspapers) She pottys fine when she's in the crate but when I take her out she refuses to use the pan for pottying. If she is locked in the crate during the night or while you are out grocery shopping she has no other choice but to either soil her bed (which dogs avoid whenever possible) or use the puppy pad. However, when she is out of the crate, why should she choose to do her business right next to where she sleeps (and maybe eats) instead of further away? Would you like to sleep somewhere where it smells like a toilet? Also, dogs have much better noses. When you are at home, you should make sure to keep an eye on your puppy at all times so that you can take her outside to potty whenever you notice that she has to go (or ~every two hours). Alternatively you can try offering her a puppy pad (or several) which is not next to her bed or food. If you keep her in a pen, you can do what the lady in the video suggested and cover the whole floor/parts of it within the pen with the puppy pads. However, I HIGHLY suggest that you take your puppy OUTSIDE!!! Otherwise she will never learn that she isn't supposed to do her business inside.

Seli Na I think you misunderstood what I said. She lives in the house and runs around once I can monitor her. She is in her crate all night and sleeps in a pan within the crate with a blanket. The other pan is for use as a potty. Once her blanket is in her bed she doesn't do any pottying there but for some reason sometimes sleep in her poo pan and sometimes in her urine even though she has a bed. What I'm trying to get her to do is to use the poo pan out of the crate and in the crate because even though I take out that same pan from the crate for her to use when she is running around in the house she doesn't use the pan unless I put her back in the crate with the poo pan. Only then she would urinate or defecate and I can't figure out why. By your logic she should he glad to potty out of the crate away from her bed but she is not doing that. She is refusing to potty unless she goes in the crate with pan.

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT, whenever I leave him at home he pees in the house: on the carpet, on the bed, on flowers.. My wife and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? Yorkies can take up to a year. Don't give up and be consistent. Monitor their food and water carefully. I had yorkies for years and some were never 100% trustworthy in the house when I went out. Crating worked for me or confining them to one room (without a carpet).

Please don't use puppy pads because it gives an order that tells the dog it's ok to pee in the house.... we don't need mix signals like that. Instead use old newspaper or chalks. You should also avoid in doors potty training. Your goal is outside.
