Apple has the look of a dog that is wondering what happened.She seems to have handed it all over to the human minions.She just closely supervises.

Love these videos! My tri color always watches Apple in awe (mine is 9 pounds - Apple is so much bigger & stronger). Today Watson's squeals brought her running 😂. She says to stay strong Watson, she used to be tiny and require supplemental feedings and now she's as big as a cat!

I’ve been wondering, Is it more common to have milk problems with a first litter? Is Apple likely to have better milk production with a second litter?
@chaskat3519 күн бұрын
It's actually more common with small litters, especially singletons. I wouldn't expect it to happen again, but you never know.

I had my first puppy litter ever last summer (I am a Cavalier breeder too). We had milk supply issues too after a week but one of the puppies had a severe overbite so couldn't latch well and so I started tube-feeding him as per my breeder mentor's suggestion. Im curious why you would bottle-feed instead of just tubing when it is so much faster? I remember those middle of the night feedings well! I am a full-time primary teacher so I had to get up in the morning for work as well which was so hard.

I asked this before I finished watching the whole video and after I unpaused you mentioned that it helps to develop their strong sucking reflex so I am guessing thats why you don't just use the tube? My little one eventually did around 2 weeks start to nurse. Oh, btw have you tried domperidone for your mama's if they have milk supply issues? I used it for myself when I nursed and it also is safe in dogs so I did that with my mama dog and she was able to increase her supply enough to feed them.

I have tube-fed many times in the past, and sometimes for long periods of time. With a tiny pup less than 2 weeks old, it's very easy to keep the tube in place while injecting the formula. With older pups, they tend to resist a bit, and wiggle rather strongly. I'm always quite confident about my tube placement into the stomach, but I do fear that a strong movement by the puppy might cause the tube to pull out slightly, and increase the chance of getting liquid into the lungs. In addition, by strengthening the suckling reflex, I feel (no real data to back this up, just a strong feeling based on experience) that the weaning process is much easier, since the very first step for me in weaning is to put soft food into the pup's mouth, and I expect him to find it natural to swallow. I might save time by tube feeding, but I think that those factors are important enough for me to take the extra time to feed the pups in a more natural manner.

In response to using domperidone, that was one of about a dozen different suggestions I received from the wonderful collective mind of the on-line breeder community. I decided to first go with the oxytocin protocol, which helped but only for a day or two, and then with Fenugreek, which is very gentle and natural, but it didn't help at all, even though others swear by it. I just couldn't put Apple through any more stress, so I just accepted the responsibility for feeding. She is very happy now, just keeping the pups warm and cleaning them up.

How many times in 24 hours do they eat?
@chaskat3519 күн бұрын
Right now, they are getting 7 feedings per 24-hour period.
@sakurasraven19 күн бұрын
@chaskat35 wow! I admire you and Kate's commitment to making sure they are well fed. Will the number slowly go down as they can eat more?
