PUPPY TIPS - Food Bowl Training (Creating Calmness At Dinner Time)

Food bowl training is important for every dog, some dogs will show more enthusiasm towards dinner time and some will be very indifferent, however every dog should learn to wait for exciting things and this is what this video goes over.
During the training of this video, I don't say one word to Mookie, I do not ask him to sit nor repeat sit, everything is done through reinforcement, sitting will bring the food down, standing up will make it go further away.

Many of my puppies and my clients' puppies are not nearly as good as the puppy in this demo. They are often demand barking and jumping from the time they even think it's mealtime. In these cases, I teach them to reinforce ANY hesitation on the dog's part. Sometimes that's simply 4 on the floor or closed mouth.

Hi Kristin, I'm wondering if you have any tips for dogs that are not interested in their food? My 8mth old pulpy really likes human food but do not like dry dog food, now he is even picky with human food! Would really appreciate your help! Eric

It was the first time for the dog? It seemed anxious. But is a great exercise to make them be patient, I did it with my dog, now every time I'm gonna feed him he gives me space, he waits and he is relaxed.

Mookie is OBSESSED with food. Dinner time for him was him lunging at me, spinning, jumping at walls and ontop of other animals as well as rushing food, biting hands. This was about 1 week of practice, however I placed dinner in another room so he would be more inclined to show how it truly works rather then his normal "dinner spot" where he's caught on how to wait.

That's great, hope to see more of your videos soon. BTW, can you make a review for the head collars (halti, gentle leader, canny collar)?? I've been looking into it but still doubtful with the idea of using one in my dog..

I love this video and we do this already, however, I failed to wait for calmness. Now I have one that just whines and whimpers the entire time I am fixing their food. Once I am done fixing the food, I have them all sit and wait while I put the bowls in their places before I release them. Can I fix the whining while preparing now that he has been practicing it for over a year?

Kelly Baker Of course! It may just take a little extra time. Be patient and quickly reward for any quiet/calm behaviours (release the dog at that moment), then slowly wait for longer period of quiet and calm.

We do work on it, I am just not fast enough at preparing food for 6 of them! ;) And my youngest puppy, the one in my profile pic, is named LUNA! :) And, she is learning from him, to whine! :P However, she will settle down and I reinforce that! But, I would like to reinforce it before it even starts!
