Omg!! I’ve just done this with my puppy and it worked! I tried the active method and low and behold she gets it! Took 3 attempts within about a minute and now she’s stopped nipping and biting during playtime. Later in the day we played again and she forgot herself a couple of times but just the noise was enough to remind her not to bite! You absolute legend!!! Thank you for this great tip! ... now on to perfecting the crate training!

Yesterday my nine week old puppy (2 whole pounds!) was making mincemeat of my fingers as I yelped and made my hand go limp. More and more and more nipping. This morning I looked for this video, now that the reality of new puppy has set in at the one week mark, watched several times, had my husband watch it and we both practiced hissing like a couple of idiots. He coaxed me on improving my hissing, we changed our approach-and I’ve had a total of three isolated nips. THANK YOU!!! You are brilliant.

Excellent video! At least I think so. I'm going to try it out. We are taking a puppy training course right now, and so far our puppy is responding very well, but it focuses entirely on "ignore and reward". That seems to work for anything we want to encourage, like retrieval or sitting or even obstacles, but doesn't seem to work great for stopping unwanted behavior. Whereas the older dog is not afraid to use corrections, and so far seems to be doing a better job training the puppy than we are. But he trains the puppy to his own ends, not necessarily ours.

Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.

The active technique is very effective and has stopped the biting of a 12-week-old labrador almost in its tracks. It is not painful but a correction that the puppy seems to instinctively understand. I have had dogs for many years and only wish I had this information earlier. Will talks through the problem and explains the techniques clearly. A really useful video.

This worked very well after one week of puppy bites from our 8 week old GSD. Now I just make the ‘sound’ of active correction and she instantly stops. I realized that our cats have made a similar sound of warning to the puppy this whole week to train her to stay a few feet back from them. Humans also have a learning curve! 😂

I taught my black lab mix to walk off leash using an Ice cream sandwich. She is a very food driven dog. I walked with the sandwich in my hand on a hot summer day and it caught her full attention. She completely focused on my hand for when a drip would come off. When I stopped, as soon as she sat down she got a couple of full licks. We passed squirrels, other dogs, and a few cats and she never once got a step behind. The second walk was without a sandwich, but praise when she stayed with me and stopped and sat when I stopped. Third walk was the same and then the fourth walk I did another Ice cream sandwich.

My understanding is the reason to do the 'whimper' and/or turn your back approach isn't to stop puppy biting altogether, but to train the puppy to develop a "soft-mouth". If you discourage the mouthing behavior entirely, an adult dog will not have learned to mouth gently when it does instinctively bite in response to some sort of startle, which poses a huge risk. I'd really like to hear people's take on this approach within that context, because although this no doubt looks effective I am confused.
@nbbagsd896
@nbbagsd896 Жыл бұрын
My method taught to me over 60 years ago by an shepherd is that I don't ignore biting, but act like an adult dog, don't react & move out of reach. So rewarding unacceptable behaviour with nothing, if a behaviour is unrewarding it will stop.
@djbeeawesome
@djbeeawesome Жыл бұрын
You are EXACTLY right. You can see this behavior in well trained dogs they will mouth as gentle as shaking hands. This is also why trainers say puppies should stay with the mom and other puppies because they learn bite control from litter mates and mom. If a human teaches bite control properly then the chance of the dog actually hurting someone is very low but like this “internet famous” trainer is teaching techniques that he claims “work” but in reality leave much to be desired.
@johncspine2787
@johncspine2787 9 ай бұрын
No. They will “soft mouth” just fine with disciplined corrections later in life. The “never actually correct” stuff from the pure positive wackos is not beneficial in the long term.

Tried thjs yesterday and today morning, had the problem that my 11 week old cavapoo thought that the correction was just more play... or just got annoyed by it! Today in the afternoon tried clapping once strongly when she bit and that succeeded in startling her. Gave her toys to chew, and we did the whole thing 3 or 4 times more. By the time I walked away, she walked after me and a couple of times came close to nipping my ankles but didn't. When I stopped, she lied down and chopped at my toes, nose touched them but didn't bite. So I think I'll stick to clapping for startling, the rest seems to be applicable from this technique.

Can you do a video about how to go about changing rules if the need arises? Obviously consistency is so important for a dog but sometimes commands need to be changed (in our case we accidentally taught the same command for 2 different actions, so we needed to work to change one of them), or rules need to change (i.e. we moved and no longer have a fenced backyard so we had to change some of the outdoor rules for safety reasons), or other things that require changes to the existing rules. What's the best way to go about changing rules when it's necessary?
