I also commented about how Senshi was sort of Japanese on Tumblr and someone pointed out that in the extras for the oneshot she shows their Wizardry 3 classes and paths as she was conceptualizing them, and Senshi was a Samurai, which I think explains his (and following from that, the dwarven) "Japaneseness" In the original art for him, he's flatter faced and his beard is more wild, which makes him really seem like a sort of somewhat deranged ronin. From there, by the time he made it to serialization, his overall design became rounder and more handsome / less haggard.
@rivermichael43575 ай бұрын
When you combine that with the fact that (iirc) Toshiro is completely absent from the original oneshot, it seems like Kui decided to take what she had in mind and split it up into two separate characters. Which I definitely think worked out for the best lol

I actually really like when anime goes off model a bit for heightened emotion or action. Its an opportunity for animators to really flex and get expressive with their creative juices. Like really go wild with the medium beyond just re-creating panels off the manga. I especially love it when animators like Kouki Fujimoto or Yutaka Nakamura go wild and play with the 3D space. Or in Yutaka Nakamura's case just flex every possible way to sell an IMPACT of an action while playin around with thr 3d space like he has for basically every cut he's done in the previous decade. Probably one of the reasons I adore the adaptation of Mob Psycho 100 is it's sketchy rough art style gave so much leeway for animators to go hog wild with the animation. Despite how rough ONE's art was, It really knew how to sell action and emotion in its panels and thst translated really well under the different lenses of many animators of the anime.

@swaggertmcdankledoo15725 ай бұрын
I really like the transitions between styles, personally. Since they tend to lean on Kanno for more action-heavy cuts, it gives the show an entirely different feel when things get real dangerous. The first time I really felt that was the Undine fight, which is also (not coincidentally) the first fight they have to full-on pull out of because it messes them up so bad and almost kills Marcille. Cutting this with comedy shots also makes the juxtaposition funnier imo because it becomes full-on juxtaposition of the work against itself from theme to styles and is more jarring in a funny way.

About our favourite halfoot's reveal. Keeping in mind I haven't read the manga. I got the impression his relationship with them was (more than geographically) distant. I could totally see Chilchuk as a bitter middle aged devorcee using work as an excuse to ignore his relationship issues. Not to mention the whole 'husband/father working overseas which is why he's never around' trope in anime. It's wild that we're following the absentee father's pov for once. As for Senshi. I don't need spoilers to know his backstory is going to be rough. Not when he just had a legitimate full on PANIC ATTACK at the sight of that griffin. I've suffered from them all my life so could clearly see it for what it was. Honestly the best depiction of such in media I've seen since Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. 10:25 big spoiler warning, bigger rambling warning I'm always had this --thing-- about how and why Senshi knows the vast scope of dishes from different regions that he does, as well as the cooking style he uses(like you said, the way he holds his knife and the fact that he often uses chopsticks). I can’t stop thinking about it, there are so many sides to tackle it from and it’s so interesting! Most of the food he makes is Japanese but there are frequent references to food from other regions as well, such as the barometz balut. According to Senshi’s timeline: he’s from Izganda; then he got stuck in the dungeon and learned from the orcs; now he occasionally comes up to the surface of the island to get supplies and of course he lives full time in the dungeon. So…where would he have learned so many different types of cuisine? The easiest thing to do would be to assume Izganda is in/near “the east”. That wouldn’t explain all of Senshi’s cooking knowledge, but it would at least account for a good portion of it since we know the east is basically just Japan. There are really no cultural signifiers of what real world location Izganda could be anchored to, so there’s nothing for or against this explanation on that front. However it’s said multiple times that just about the only races other than tallmen in the east are ogres. It’s also said that there are no long lives races in the east. Given this, it’s unlikely that Senshi and the other dwarves are from a place anywhere near there. The answer for why Senshi makes so much Japanese food is both inside and outside Dungeon Meshi itself, and in some ways it’s pretty simple: Dungeon Meshi was created because Ryoko Kui really, REALLY likes drawing the process of people cooking. There are so many spreads in the daydream hours of her expressing craving for different food by drawing the process of making it, and some unrelated short stories that are solely about cooking. I'm oversimplifying the reason of dungeon meshi's creation of course, and I'd probably even point to other oneshots she's done that connect to other themes she wanted to come back to in Dungeon Meshi, but drawing food she loves is definitely a core component. There’s metacommentary in Dungeon Meshi that I feel ultimately addresses this whole thing. When the party is trying to piece together what Marcille’s “local cuisine” is, it sounds like they could be describing various regional dishes(probably italian)…and finally, it's revealed Senshi made ramen. Izutsumi is like, "isn't this COMPLETELY wrong" and the crux of the gag is they have no idea what she’s talking about and they reach various levels of absurdity to misinterpret why she's confused. The fact that this is in the manga tickles me to no end and it's all the acknowledgement I need to, especially when near the end of the manga, to be like “yeah…maybe it doesn't make too much sense but it’s whatever! the food's still delicious~!"

Interesting pount about knife grip. As European with no training in cooking I found it natural to use point grip - that's why I dislike knifes with narrow blade or sharp edges on back.

can't wait for the black bicorn and Dullahan, where Chilchuck shines as a doting father.

I'm pretty sure dwarves originated in the east. There was a war between the east and west between the dwarves and elves. And considering the elves are from the west the Draves are inferred to be from the east.

I wonder if you’ll keep making these videos once dungeon meshi is over, because I actually learned a lot from your videos as a beginner animator myself. It would be interesting to see older studio Trigger works, or maybe some crazy jujutsu kaisen sequences.

For some reason the color of the familiars suprised me. Despite them being made of meat, I expected them to be white?

Did Laos and crew just all up and ate Marcille's Hair? Jokes aside, this was my favorite episode but of course I moaned in agony when the episode ended on a cliffhanger, so hoping the next one takes the cake. All of the Characters (minus Izumi who just joined) had some really good characterization showing how they've grown their bond.

They did eat her hair! There's a part of the manga where Izutsumi coughs up a hairball after eating the skysnake lol
