Off on another Thai Street food adventure. This time in Ban Tad Thong and I make one other stop as Em and I visit the Museum of contemporary art. We kick off our street food adventure off in Ban Tad Thong at Jay Sri Chao Tam for something called water mimosa salads. What a great way to kick off our street food adventure than with a Thai vegetable dish I have never had. Full of prawns, minced pork, squid and octopus.
maps.app.goo.gl/Aw9nxnneWkf6Y...
Next we stop by Tung Chae Tao Tan for epic bowls of their signature dishes, pork with fried noodles in gravy and the same with a milk gravy. Might not sound like much but I loved this as much as I did when I found pad kra pau for the first time. And to boot, these fried noodles are fried in pork lard giving them a fatty and rich flavour.
maps.app.goo.gl/uXC7ebyYe9HH4...
Next we head to a newer sweet shop in Bangkok called Tuay Tung. And my God are they doing it right.
Fresh baked bread with salted egg custard and steamed buns with peanut candy crumble and cream. Literally to die for.
maps.app.goo.gl/XSMFqZCefFpyj...
We finish the day off at a place I still have no idea how to translate to English. It's Thai name is โอยั๊วะเกษตร, but I'm sure that is no help. This hidden gem near the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Lat Yao area of Bangkok was amazing at every turn. No English menus and nobody speaks English but the nicest people you will ever meet. I should be probably mention the frosty beers and food are to die for.

was any of that street food? i seem to have a different definition i wonder if there's water mimosa in the Philippines. it's not common at all if so.
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 17 күн бұрын
No, none of this was actual street food. There are two reasons for the title. 1. There was a street food scene filmed for this video(title was chosen before I even filmed it) and it didn't make it into the video because it wasn't very good. 2. "Street Food" has better overall SEO. 😁

The brown thing is “crispy” squid (if translated literally from Thai to English) - it’s squid which is altered by baking soda to make it “crispy” which gives it a more complimentary texture to some dish like Yen Ta Fo (pink noodle with fermented tofu broth).
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 12 күн бұрын
Perhaps, but there was nothing "crispy" about it really. And I later found a piece of octopus in there that tasted exactly like that. The squid pieces I had remained white and were only steamed or boiled
@amphreded
@amphreded 12 күн бұрын
@@PureDetourin Thai we call it “crispy squid” or หมึกกรอบ but it’s not really crispy, hence the quotation marks. It has more of a bouncy feel. Unless it’s a mid to high end restaurant, usually we Thais don’t serve octopus in spicy salad (known as “yum” ยำ). You can occasionally find octopus in the dish “yum seafood” which features a mixture of seafood protein.

water mimosa in filipino is makahiya... filipinos don't usually eat that but I tasted that in Thailand and it's so delicious
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 16 күн бұрын
It is absolutely delicious here in Thailand. Don't know if I would ask for them in the Philippines as I am not a huge fan of many Filipino vegetables. A couple I really love but for me it is the one thing lacking in Filipino food, quality vegetable dishes.
@MidnightBloomer
@MidnightBloomer 15 күн бұрын
@@PureDetour We have a lot of good quality vegetable dishes but not in the streets. You'll find them usually at high end restaurants and being cooked by grandmothers in provinces, because the ingredients are expensive here in the philippines (unless they are being grown right at our garden), so street food usually are not that good compared to Thailand. Our native and authentic Filipino dishes are almost lost now. I bet you haven't really tasted authentic sinigang, and chopsuey, Bulanglang, sauteed beans, and many more. Real sinigang does not have "sinigang mix" but a lot of Filipinos thought that it is how it's supposed to be cooked because small restaurants used that to cook sinigang because they want to earn more so they compromised the quality of the food for more money. In Thailand it is different they won't compromise the quality of the food and change the recipe for more profit they'd rather have 4-5 baht and have more customers that would come back eventually. They do not have a one-time big time mentality.
@MidnightBloomer
@MidnightBloomer 15 күн бұрын
@@PureDetour In small restaurants in the philippines most vegetables are overcooked because they are heated every once in a while, since they cook big batches and just display them. Unlike in Thailand where they would cook as you order. There are restaurants here that cooks good food, but they are more expensive, and I know I most of the time cook better than them, so I rarely go out and eat. Not because they cannot cook but because they usually again compromise the quality to gain more profit. To eat good food, you must go to "fiestas" in Batangas. The ingredients usually are top notch, and the usual cooking is the authentic way not the profitable way
@MidnightBloomer
@MidnightBloomer 13 күн бұрын
@@PureDetour Not sure if I have replied to your comment but we have very good vegetable dishes "but" it is very rare that you'd see them on restaurants because filipinos usually eat vegetables at home especially people from the province, we cook them ourselves, so basically we eat out to eat beef, pork, fastfood - pizza, hamburger etc. Things that we don't usually eat at home. If you want to try vegetables since they also have become expensive and at karinderyas they are often mushy because they are being recooked - not many people buy them as I have said people in the Philippines prefer to eat meat outside their homes. Better go to expensive restaurants to experience good vegetable dishes
