Purge Unit Troubleshoot for Trane Chiller

Going through a Trane centrifugal low pressure chiller purge unit troubleshooting. The purge unit low charge was causing it to not remove atmosphere properly.

I could never understand the purge operation until I finally looked at the manual. I always thought there was some sort of magic going on in the purge tank. You can always check subcooling by taking liquid temperature and condenser coil temperature ( condenser coil temperature is usually the 2/3rd turn tube opposite of the discharge line connection ). You wanna be between 8-15 subcooling. Anything less is a undercharge

But he removed the charge, if the weight was off(under), then it's undercharged. He also recharged it with what I ASSUME was the 0.6 Lbs that it needed, soo...

Have you ever seen the contactors on an IntelliPak pull in and out without tripping an alarm? So 60 ton, VFD circuit 1, 2 compressors circuit 2. Circuit 2 compressor contactors and first condenser fan contactor will pull in and out simultaneously without triggering alarms are tripping the compressor protection breaker. Only does it in the morning and not everyday. Circuit runs fine the rest of the day and in service mode and with circuit 1 running. All switches are good. Can’t find any shorts. Compressors not over amping nor overloading transformer no fuses blowing. Maybe it’s the MCM but it only does it in morning although that is the only time really it will bring the other circuit on. 24v inputs are good and 120v outputs. Any thoughts?

It's when there's too much compressor lift. In a chiller that *is* properly charged and operational, it's usually low condenser water flow and/or high condenser water temperature. This causes a high compressor ratio or lift. Basically the high/low pressure differential is too high for the compressor to overcome. The refrigerant pressure is too high in the condenser and flows backwards into the compressor, causing an audible "surge" during operation. In my experience, I've seen poorly ran chiller plants with a bad sequence in general or may try to save tower energy(which is a drop in the bucket compared to the chiller energy). This leads to frequent surge issues.
