Getting your hackles up, according to grammarist and others, comes from the hair/feathers on dogs and cockerels when they are prepared to fight or defend themselves. Do not know how that connects except that a hackle comb teases up fibers.

Anne says the knitters in Shetland tend to work from memory so they may have a yoke they knit over and over or they may see someone else’s and be inspired and duplicate it as best they can from memory.
