Have you checked into some of the cadet programs available with some of the airlines? They’re not just for college kids and high school grads. You pay for your flight training up to the CFI level, but then you get hired on and paid to teach until you reach your ATP mins. I’m thinking of the United Aviate program here, but there are others as well.

I’m a nearly 20 year high school science teacher making over 100k per year, regarding the guy asking the question, don’t quit your job! Work, keep that steady income and use it for your flight training at a cheap mom and pop flight school! I started last summer, spent 9k on ppl part 61, 13k ifr instrument, and I’m now doing part 61 commercial but splitting much of my commercial time. This coming summer I plan to do an accelerated CFI and II program. I will keep teaching while I CFI as I have nearly 3 months off during the year to CFI full time and I can CFI after work. All while building my already nice pension. Keep your job and fly often!

Similar situation, can retire with a pension as a law enforcement sergeant in 3 years and ideally want to be set up to get a job with an airline when im done. Have ALWAYS wanted to be a pilot but leaving before I get my pension wouldn't be the best decision. So hopefully i can do it part time flying once or twice a week.

I'm somewhat in same boat. Married, 1 kid, 1 on way. Job pays slightly over 200k. My insurance is paid, I pay family insurance. And it's an easy job. Going to work while I train. I don't want to take the hit to net worth. Will take me longer, but that's how it's going to be, due to the family obligations. Probably will buy a plane to fly around after instrument rating to get my hours. Add CFI and teach. If I was single and no kids, then, yeah, I would be burning the boats and going all out!

Career 2.0 right here. 21 year cop. Bought a Cessna less than a year ago, just hit 150 hours, airplane goes in next week for a full panel upgrade for IFR and while it’s down the plan is to knock out the instrument and commercial written. Hopefully I can get it knocked out in the next 6 months.. 10-20 hours a week I’m averaging. I sure hope I can keep up the pace.

This was a great video gents. I am 51 and have been a first responder for a major Florida city for 24 years. I started my Flight Training about a year ago and I’m about to take my instrument check ride. I’m sitting at about 330 hours at this point. I feel like it has taken me a little longer, and probably a little more expensive, than most people since I am flying on my days off. I wasn’t ready to retire from the city until I had gotten a bit deeper into things to make sure it’s something I would be successful at. Once I finish my commercial and keep logging some hours, it will be time to retire and look for that entry level pilot job for career 2.0. Thank you for your great content.

Actually in the process of this exact transition. Currently a teacher (12 years) and starting flight school at a "big box" flight academy near where I live. It is scary to think of not having an income for a time, among other financial obstacles but it will hopefully be worth it in the end. I love my job as a teacher but it's time to move on to some something more fulfilling for me.

Im in a similar spot kind of..36 years of age, married no kids and work as an IT manager in the San Diego area. I make good money but its getting very stale/boring for me. Ive always dreamt of being a pilot. After speaking with a few guys from a local fb group i decided to do what another gent did in a very similar role IT wide but is 15 years older. Get the ppl and fly as more or less a hobby until i can get to the cfi level and build up my hours that way. Currently looking at ground school so will most likely do the medical exam first to knock that out of the way and then start king schools (open to suggestions). Fun fact is the small airport where i would be training is on the way home from work.

Man to live in the states… 40mins to local airport… what a tough life to do something you really want to do 😅 I’m at least an hour and that one isn’t open for students right now, so doing 1hr45 to another one. But wait, Factoring in this is a great place and has great rates too, they also have a waiting list so only getting in every now and then just now if there is space… then throw in the Irish weather! Mans doing everything right if you ask me! Good luck for this fella, wish him all the best 🤝

You guys interviewed Fly With Trent and he's just gone from Zero to First Officer in 13 months...
@srothchild955 ай бұрын
Which is a great testimony, but Trent was a position many of us are not in. He could drop his entire life and had more than enough cash on hand to not only fund his training from start to finish, but also maintain a lifestyle for his family. I admire Trent's story, but he is an outlier. Randy is in a much more realistic scenario (kids, good job, some money but not enough to quit his job). Sure, if we all had $50k sitting around and unlimited time, we could all do it.
@brandonthorpe58695 ай бұрын
Yup, Trent is great but had a unique opportunity to be a full time student funded with savings. If we all had it, we’d all do it.

Sorry guys, but this episode took forever to actually say something. Randy’s video was too long and could have been paraphrased to speed things up. Then you took a couple minutes re-wording Randy’s question! You did not give any real info or advice until the 14 minute mark. And really all you said was “yes, get your ratings and change careers.” Expecting to get much if any CFI work from high school kids is a stretch. How many kids are interested and organized enough to pursue this…and of those, how many have the funds to drop $5-15K over a summer. This episode could have been eight minutes long.
