I had to peel 10 pounds of potatoes last week for our thanksgiving dinner and for those 30+ minutes I felt like a real life hoof trimmer. I carefully investigated the bruised areas and only trimmed what was necessary and then I carefully dug out any rotten spots as if they were a sole ulcer. Needless to say my wife thinks I’m 100% insane.

Every time I watch these, they make me think of my Uncle Pete and how he smelled. He was a dairy farmer and I used to love to visit him. He even let me help once deliver a calf. What I remember most is his smile and how he smelled. Fresh air and cows, nothing better.

I grew up on a farm during the 40s thru the 60s, and the barn was to me a magical place. I was probably in middle school when my dad woke all of us up in the wee hours of the morning. He told us to put on some clothes that could get dirty and high-tail it to the barn. One of the cows was having a terrible time giving birth. My dad had tied a rope around the calf’s front feet, and my grandpa, mother, older sister, younger brother, and I were able to pull that calf out! We were all surprised that both the mother and her calf survived. We spent many happy summer hours petting the kittens in the barn.
