I feel like there’s a gendered double standard in who gets to make music for white audiences. Because Kanye, The Weekend, Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Drake etc are all all Black Men that have a a very large white audience especially at their tours. but their blackness and who they make music for is never called into question. But as soon as a black woman makes pop music it’s an issue. They hated it when Nicki Minaj did it with Starships, they did it with Lizzo when Truth Hurts Blew Up. People constantly hate on Beyoncé Sasha fierce era. Black folks telling Normani that she needs to go make some R&B music, when she clearly wants to be a popstar. It’s as if being black and female religates you to slowed down R&B/Rap songs and ballads. While black men get to be very diverse in the music that they decide to release. 😏

Hmmm I hear it but I think idea of receiving/consuming Blackness is revered (and feared) from Black men which is why white audiences flock to it. However for Black women Blackness is met with resentment and disdain a lot of the time.

Well, drake's blackness has constantly been put into question because of his inability to center blackness into his music. U also forgetting that of all the rappers you named, none of them (except drake and the weekend) have ever really made pop music

THANK YOU. I get SO ANGRY when people say Lizzo makes music for white people. REALLY? Last I checked that was our music. Rock and Roll, EDM, disco....ALL that is black music. Why is it white? Because it's fun and positive?! Ugh....I notice some black people only get gatekeep-ey about black music when white people are making copies of what we do....but fail to recognize artists that expand upon genres that we created in spaces that are now dominated by white people. Thank you for speaking on that because too many black content creators have been repeating that idea (of her making "white music), smart educated ones too, and it's a pretty ignorant perspective, i think. Lizzo will keep reinventing herself, and will keep breaking barriers. I wish the black community would support her more sometimes.
@lorettahoffmann42262 жыл бұрын
I think you picked up on something really interesting when you addressed the attack of black art rooted in fun and positivity. I feel that for some black folk there is a disregard for art that isn’t centered in trauma or emotional/physical violence, but we need art that reflects the diverse emotions in black people. Narratives in mainstream media recycle the same violence centered and lazy white supremacist tropes in superhero movies to video games to all other art. Expanding through art is vital to expanding the collective imagination to construct a better future and give relief to people that have to deal with daily systemic oppression.

Brandy started the teenage pop sensation movement back in 1994 that Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and *NSYNC followed. Christina’s debut album was heavily influenced by Brandy’s “Never Say Never” album that sold 17 million copies worldwide, might I add. Brandy was just handpicked by Mariah Carey one of the greatest voices of all times to be a part of her master class and re-record “The Roof”. Brandy was also picked by Whitney Houston “The Voice” to be Whitney’s protégé. Let that sink in. Brandy’s “Full Moon” album is what deemed her as “The Vocal Bible” and it influenced Tamar Braxton, Jazmine Sullivan, etc. also, Erykah Badu admitted that Brandy’s debut album influenced “Baduizm”. Brandy is legendary and y’all are going to put some respect on her name. Brandy is your favorite singer’s favorite singer. Tamar Braxton said that.

I love the pop girl pyramid! I love the criteria and the appearance of legends. As far as Brandy's vocal prowess goes, I think what many people fail to understand is that when you become a master of your craft there is no denying the hardwork and discipline. It sounds cliche but after a certain level of study and prowess, you are simply in competition with your own ability and journey as an artist. So for example, Brandy will never be able to sing like a Mariah or a Beyonce (and vice versa), because they all have voices with their own set of idiosyncracies--but that doesn't take away from the mastery of anyone's craft. (Also all three of them are simply masters of background vocals and layering). Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey. And I love the past few years where more of the conversation has been shifted to center everything she does as a musician. As a vocalist, songwriter, producer, musician, etc, she has just had such an amazing masterful discography since debut. I hate that the 90s-2000s flavor of misogynoir really colored the public perception of her. So often she would be described as ditzy or not taken seriously, when so often it was her crafting playfulness, humor, and specific references alongside these very masterful insanely complex songs (or simply responding to the very real traumas in her life by centering childlike joy, playfulness, and imagery). Her ability to be so complex and masterful musically, while anchoring the songs in simplicity, camp, and ear candy for the general population? Unmatched. Beyonce's 4 is such a turning point in her career. It laid the groundwork for self-titled up until Black Is King. But at the time of release, alot of people overlooked it and started to count Beyoncé out. So often when people think of Grammy snubs, not enough people mention that 4 was barely nominated (just take a look at the 54th grammy nominations to see it's competition and be befuddled by the lack of nominations). 2011 was such a strange year for r&b, but 4 was such a shining light anchored in the expansiveness of r&b from the 60s up until 2011. And I think vocally it really showcased what Beyoncé could do in a way that hadn't been heard on studio recordings up until that point, so much of the rawness and soul and ridiculous vocal acrobatics were more prominent for the live show. I think one of Beyonce's superpowers is the ability to draw people in from different angles whether it's the music, the vocals, the choreography, the visuals, the live performances. She can take a song you might like well enough, and give a performance that transforms that into a top favorite song. I think with that in mind she has absolutely created listening experiences that are no skips for me (B'Day standard tracklisting, 4, selftitled, and Lemonade are all there for me). But I do recognize that many people would rather have the initial studio recordings of an album be as massive and sensational as her live performances (which is partially why the live album of Homecoming was so massive and especially refreshing for casual listeners who have never paid attention to Beyonce live performances)

Looooove this series, thank you for initiating it!!! Could you also include the names of these artists in your pyramid graphic? I think it would be helpful for those of us hoping to look into these different artists, e.g., I wouldn’t have known how Emeli Sander’s name was spelled that way if not for the comments. Not a huge deal for me personally, but helpful nonetheless, and that’s possibly (likely?) true for others on here
