It's so funny how the foals will immediately go for a drink, once they're reunited with the mare - even if it was a really short separation. It's like they can't relax, until they made sure, the milk fountain is still running 😄

@@lindadunn7656 I remember babysitting my nephew for the first time, when he was 2 weeks old. He promptly tried to nurse on me, as well. Like a little homing missile going straight to the target. Lol. It was pretty funny, because it took me a minute to realize, what was going on. I used to think, that the milk smell activated that instinct, but apparently just having boobs is enough 😄

Think Saly and myself have the same annoyance....if I get just one stray hair on my eye or lid I go bats til I can sweep it away. Think she had forelock hair touching her upper eyelid and the normally patient Saly was trying to toss it off. Yvonne should get a 🎖 for her sweet and gentle patience ❣️👏🏻What a wonderful Mommy she must be,especially with 2 boys😂

Well, now that the foals are weaned, she can grow out her beautiful mane again! That makes me wonder...go mares through pregnancy related hair issues as well (like humans)? Are there any other common issues? I mean, I know they can't get morning sickness, since horses don't throw up, but do they have similar things going on, that's typical for pregnant mares? It would be interesting, if you did a monthly 'pregnancy update', telling viewers about the growing fetuses (where they are in their development) and how/if it affects the mares and their care/training.

For people asking questions. It’s boredom usually. Just give the foal more to do when they are stuck in small spaces for longer periods of time and they usually stop. It can also be a sign of insecurity or anxiety in the foal and chewing the hair is just a habit they’ve picked up to feel safer. Just like kids sucking on their thumbs or chewing their own hair.

I had to do that for my previous dog. She loved chewing all things plastic, and wouldn't mind wooden things either. The problem fixed itself when she was about 9 months old and finagled her way to the back of a standing freezer to chew on the wires. It was the middle of the night, there was a very loud bang and a yelp, plus my father had to restart the circuit board of the house. She acted scared of the freezer for the rest of her life, and never chewed on wires again.

Have you tried the old fashioned braid, braid as you have but instead of putting the band on the end, fold the tail of the plat up to the neck, fold under again then band, or the way we had to do it was with a needle and thread. It might move the mane out of the foals reach.

in the uk, we have a company called snuggy hoods. They are face and neck covers that are put on mostly to protect the horse from getting too muddy. They could work for protecting the manes. For tails, not sure. I know you could bandage them to some extent, but they need them for fly swatting.

Just a guess here, but I imagine it's because they need the tails to swat at insects, and for other reasons.

There is a product called "Bitter Apple" it is to keep puppies from chewing. It is a spray. It doesn't take much. I wonder if a foal would find it also bad. Do they mind bitter taste? It would be easier to apply, and it wouldn't stink. www.amazon.com/Grannicks-Bitter-Apple-Taste-Deterrent/dp/B0006G5REC?th=1&psc=1 That's American "Amazon". Maybe you can get it there as well. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't know why they do it. Maybe it's playing or tasting or wanting to chew on something 😄❤️
