I fear there are people in at least three superpowers who are considering a scenario whereby they feel that a few million deaths less than the other side might be considered a victory even though it would cause a nuclear winter or worse for our planet. The unpredictability of people like Putin or countries like North Korea, China, India and Pakistan even Iran makes world peace a very fragile and uncertain goal. Let us not forget that those who give the orders will be in underground fortresses fully equipped to ride out the nuclear holocaust they would visit upon our planet. It only takes one unstable leader to drag us into WWIII as events in Ukraine demonstrate. If Putin convinced himself Russia might prevail he would have no hesitation in pressing the button.

"Hypersonic ICBM" is a cringy thing to say, all ICBMs are Hypersonic, just because Hypersonic cruise missiles are making a huge trend doesn't mean you have to use the term "Hypersonic" everywhere... Hypersonic weapons (cruise and glide weapons) only provide better maneuverability and/or control and less predictability of trajectory, as they can manuever, unlike ballistic missiles (HyPeRSoNiC ICBMs Included)

Its not pointless. Ranges of missiles increase all the time. Since the US has been looking for ever closer range to Russian launch sites and placing thos rockets there, effectively creating a shield, Putin already said decades ago he cant and wont answer symmetrically. So he ordered development of of rockets with far higher speeds, which then negates any shield. Its the US that ended ABM treaty and the mid range one, which they circumvented ever since its existence, placing them on ships. And Russia answered assymetrical to that aswell, placing those all over the place on barges, even in Syria. The entire premisse of the nuclear threat balance is that none of them can circumvent the others capabillity. Which is exactly what the US intended and did.

The USA has 18 Ohio-class submarines, of which 14 are Trident II SSBNs, each capable of carrying 24 Trident II D5 SLBMs. Each missile is capable of carrying up to 12 475 kiloton W88 warheads or up to 14 W-76 100 kiloton warheads. If I remember correctly, current treaty limitations limit this to 3 or 4 warheads per missile. Canon fodder for Russia to have to literally use half of their nukes to destroy them before we launch them. It's not really possible for Russia to 'destroy' them in that sense before they are launched. Total cities in Russia: According to the data of 2010 Russian Census, there are 1,117 cities and towns in Russia. Russia has 12 cities with more than a million people, 201 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 1294 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. These cities range in size from the 100K residents in Vacaville, CA to the nearly 8.4 million people living in New York, America's most populous city. While there are 20,000 locations classified as cities in the United States, they vary greatly in size. Ten American cities have a population of over 1 million people (including the three mentioned above), 34 cities have a population of more than 500,000 (including Detroit, Austin, San Francisco and Boston), and many more have smaller populations. Does Russia have 20,000 nukes? Nope. Their quoted 5,000-6,000 are not all capable.
