I really judge the political reasoning behind sanctioning Russia. Sanctioning Russia is not like sanctioning North Korea. Russia is energy independent, food independent, natural resources independent, defense independent, space independent and has all the necessary tech and know-how to run a developed country. The world needs Russia's resources which are 'essential' and far more important than things that Russia imports from the rest of the world. What the west has really given Russia is nothing but a legal reason to weaken them. By attacking Ukraine has Russia fallen into NATO's trap or by sanctioning Russia west has fallen into Russia's trap?

Wrong. The west's sanctions are pernicious because it makes life in Russia less attractive than life in the west. Putin says they'll evolve, but the biggest brains will favor west rather than Russia. Not only that, the world will move on (maybe tentatively) from fossil fuels to renewables. Also, obviously, it's not the west's young men that are being maimed and killed. It's ugly, but those men are gonna come back to Russia needed significant social services. I doubt they'll receive it.

Russia started the process of manufacturing localisation a long ago, the process went even faster after 2014 sanctions. About 80 % of goods on russsian market are locally manufactured ( food is almost 95 %, apart from exotic fruits and some veggies). That is why the negative effect of some companies leaving the market will not be high. What Russia really need is to develop its own high-end electronic chip and other high-tech hardware manufacturing. So far Russia is largely dependent from China, Taiwan and South Korea, need to further develop its own hi-tec industry.

It's now June '22, and the plant remains closed - the government is 100% incompetent regarding manufacturing.

Correct. Russia was really wise to refuse Marshall Plan money after WW2. They knew it was a trick, a trap to put them under obligation to the US who was hoping to break them up and take them over (divide and conquer). That trick has failed and it's finally backfiring.

The interesting thing about all these companies pulling out of Russia is that they have immediately lost all their market share. That took years to build. Now, completely gone overnight. We all recognize that this "special operations" in Ukraine will end some day soon, and all these companies will be crawling back to re-enter the Russian market. It's back to business. Or is it? How will these western companies be received by the Russian consumer? How many years will it take to regain the earlier market share? Particularly when faced with an emboldened and more confident local Russian competitor. I believe it will be very tough. Russians will absolve an adversary of many wrongs, but not betrayal and abandonment. 🇪🇪🇺🇲
