I love the concept. Approximately how much row feet do you estimate that one tractor is able to effectively control the weeds for?
@Pepper565510 жыл бұрын
this is brilliant Joseph. I am searching a tractor for one or two chickens. I have many but one is being abused and she ain't quite right in the head I think. She has been ms Houdini, but I think I have finally fixed all of her exit spots, but after watching her in the pen it seems she is being abused by the other hens and the rooster pull trains on her, and I do not want that, but I can't let her just free range cuz she eats up my garden plants. I ain't ready to butcher her yet either, so my alternative is to build a small tractor to keep her in and I can see a small tractor and being able to move it freely about the garden and even my raised beds. Thnx for sharing this just made my head start spinning. This is an excellent idea, I will put this lil psycho to work for me.

I like this design. How would you different on the rebuild? I have been wanting to build a small one like this just for the same reason. I am planning on a egg box in mine though. I really like the feed shelf design on your tractors.

Main thing I would add is a door. I am building more this year and don't have enough roosters to power them, so I will be adding a nest box for the hens.

How long do you need to leave the tractor in one place until it's time to move it, until the ground has been cleared?
@JL-by4xu10 жыл бұрын
Yes, I leave it until the ground is clear. For the established weeds in the video it took about three days, for small weeds you could move it everyday. I will be using it this year from the start, so I will know how effective it is when you don't let the weeds get out of control.

Joseph Lewis 3 days is not bad, do you follow up with some sort of anti-weed cover crop planting, like clover, perhaps? If not how long does it stay clear? Basic weed-growing time? The reason I ask is that I have a largish yard that is massively infested with dandelions and I'd like to replace the yard's grass with clover. Would you use this technique to clear out typical lawn grass?
@JL-by4xu10 жыл бұрын
I have only used the row crop cultivator last year at the end of the season, so the weeds didn't come back. I would say they will come back faster than mechanical cultivation as the roots are often still there. I am using these row crop chicken tractors again this year, so I will know more. For lawns I would use a full size chicken tractor as they cover more ground. I have not tried what you are attempting, but think it would work. I use my chicken tractors to clear areas in the garden to plant.

So nice and light and easy to move but I worry over pvc even though it's so popular. One thing it probably wouldn't blow over between rows of corn. Looks like we save money for insecticides and herbicides. They may be around to arrest you. You should be careful.
@JL-by4xu8 жыл бұрын
I have yet to have one blow over, although the lighter ones are not predator proof.

Oh ya and no fertilizer. How can you beat that for savings. Teach your kids and also fat cockerals for dinner. Benefits for all and economical ecological to boot.

Yes, my kids have no problems eating our chickens. They grew up knowing many would be dinner.
