I think you misspoke at the 48ish min mark you said the green wires are the positive output but i think you hooked them up and meant positive in

Positive output from the switch is what I said.

I know very little about wiring but you can just optionally skip the AA and only wire up the DC jack to the buck, right? I'd like to use one of those 5v USB phone batteries for power if possible.

Yeah you can skip the internal battery bridge entirely and save some weight
