I learned to ride for the first time on an 04 ninja 250 named Tsubaki that i bought from a shady craiglist guy i met in a walmart parkinglot. I bought the bike and learned to ride while i drove it home an hour away on the interstate. Was completely terrifying and exilerating at the same time. It was instant love. Now i ride Tsubaki every day for the past 5 weeks even though it's barely above freezing here right now in the day. LIVE TO RIDE-RIDE TO LIVE!

i feel like alot of the learning curve on bikes is just operating a manual gearbox. if you already know how to do that its just learning how to do it with a hand lever and foot gear selector. I want to learn how to ride and the other day went to a motorsport dealership to sit on some bikes and the first thing i noticed, which I didnt expect was the sheer size of these 'little' sportbikes. I could touch the ground just fine but was just surprised by how big of vehicles they are to actually sit on
@dsp43929 жыл бұрын
John Doe As counter-intuitive as it sounds, operating a manual gearbox is one of the easiest parts of operating a motorcycle, especially (as you mentioned) if you've already driven a manual car. Slow speed maneuvers (tight u-turns, turns from a standstill, etc) constitute the bulk of the learning curve for new (and some older) riders. Once you've mastered the basics, proper throttle control and good leaning technique (counter-steering + weight shifting) become the main challenges.
@Alexandertryk9 жыл бұрын
dsp4 I agree. Where I live in Denmark we all drive manual gearboxes, both on bikes as well as in cars, there is really no huge market for automatic gearboxes. Learning how to shift on a bike is easy, you get it within the first hour of driving - it all comes down to cludge-controll and throttle at the beginning. As soon as your master the cludge you can make those small turns much easier and then - as you say - from there, it's all about leaning techniques. A lot of people I talk to think your steer a bike with the handlebar ;-)
@koofdome6 жыл бұрын
I gotta say, driving a manual trans car helped me a lot. I never sat on a bike in my life. But with a few hours of practice per day, by day 3 I felt good enough to go on the main streets at 35-40mph in traffic. Without any manual transmission experience it would take longer for sure. The shifting is what gets people, especially feathering the clutch.
@kattmilk3 жыл бұрын
Same here! I've always had sports cars, and manual shifting really helps your brain adjusts to the shifting on motorcycle bike. When I first took my lessons on a Honda Rebel, I thought the shifting would be a nightmare, but actually was easier than I thought. I'm hoping to get this Ninja next though.
@davidgesell2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I learning how to drive a car on a manual and it really is the same feel while on a bike. You are already keen to listening to the motor and transmission and how they are working together. Any bogging down or stuttering and you know something has to change. Glad my mom made me learn on a manual transmission. Thought it was a lost art until i got a bike and realized "hey this is still a thing!"

The first time I rode my bike I rode around my block for like 30 minutes. There is no way you will feel comfortable riding in traffic with 30 minutes of riding. I rode around my neighborhood for a week before I rode in the city. Takes about 1-2 months to get it good, after that you slowly pick up something new. Takes about five minutes to learn how to ride it and get it moving but takes at least a month to feel comfortable.

Heck, I have/had a dirt bike and drive/drove a manual truck, why not when starting while going up a hill obviously be in first but find where the clutch grabs and that'll put tension on the engine which you can then release the break and just ease out the clutch when you wanna go... that's how I do it at stops in the truck (on slants). Sure you wanna use your breaks commonly and not wear the clutch but it's still something that's good to know, and depending on where you don't always wanna have to focus on both the brake and clutch. In my opinion.

The whole, should I get a small bike to start with or the one I really want, question is fueled by people thinking that they're going to marry their first bike. Get a small used bike off of craigslist for less than $2000, ride it for 500 miles and then sell it for just about as much as you paid for it. Those small bikes sell fast and after a certain point depreciate in value very slowly. Think of it as an extended rental. Then get the one you really want.

About to finish my first season of riding. I took some riding courses before i got my license but sadly my teacher wasnt nearly as good as yours. He almost came off as it was just another day at the office. I'd ask him about things I was doing wrong and he'd just go "I'll let you know if you make some" but I would sometimes fail to shift to second gear and hit neutral before going to 2nd, I mean even I noticed it and he didnt mention it until I asked him about it. Luckily the last two sessions was with another guy who was really really good. For people watching this who want to start riding. I was in your shoes earlier during the summer when I just got my license and work on getting comfortable at slow speeds. That's whats really hard about riding imo. Sharp turns at slow speed makes balancing a bigger factor. Main two things is shifting and slow speeds. At faster speeds its easier to turn since you just counter steer.

I drive a manual transmission car and its completely second nature now. But on a car you can slap it right into neutral. When riding a bike can you just hold in the clutch and shift from say 5 to 1 or do you have to let out for each individual gear?!?!
@yogilipe2810 жыл бұрын
yes, you don't need to let out the clutch every time, just hold it and go to any gear

Oscar Felipe Lozano López okay great thanks man
@FebruaryFG9 жыл бұрын
William Jeffrey Sometimes the gears will jam and you won't be able to go either up or down, especially if you have just stalled your bike. It is always better to do gear changes in a step wise fashion.
@JohnDoe-xu7xu9 жыл бұрын
Oscar Felipe Lozano López not necessarily. Depends on the bike. Bc on the 94 gs 250 you have to do it individually

I started on a 600 but I'm getting a 300 for insurance. Only 16. I'm scared that the 300 will be very boring since I already got to feel how fun the 600 is

This helped a lot! I have zero experience on a motorcycle, but I really wanna give it a try! My main concern is my lack of knowledge and experience on a manual, and my size. I'm super tiny. 5'3 and I weigh about 110lbs haha.

Just taught a friend of mine, she is 5'2 & 100 pounds. She can only touch tip toe on one side. She did surprisingly well. So it is very possible for you to learn. Just try to learn on a lighter bike. If u have any questions just ask.

Thanks! What kind of bike did she start on? I've been looking into either a Ninja 250 or a cbr 250. Lately I've been leaning towards the Honda. Although it really all depends on what I can find on the market lol.

im 5'7 165 so my motorcycle choices are limited so i stay with the 250 class since i prefer light flickable bikes

+Kayyvr she started on a honda 250. it was the perfect bike for her to start on it was very light the clutch was very easy to get used to. I think you will be fine. Just be very cautious, and continously scan in front and also all around you.

dont grab a hand full of front break 30 - 30 and only use 2 fingers on the break and do it slowly too quick your back or front wheel can lock (Helps if you have ABS)
@unger41328 жыл бұрын
Yeah, very dangerous if you lock you front breaks at high speed. When locking your rear breaks you should continue holding the break until you stop even though they are locked, but if you lock your front breaks you need to let go of them immediately. Your front breaks are something like 60-70% of your breaking power, so you definitely want to be very subtle with them.

yea 70-30 is what i hears my dad tell a kid learning how to ride a sport bike (he has ride for at least 30 years on basically all styles of 2 wheeled bikes)
@dapster8 жыл бұрын
It's 70-30 Front to back Frosty. Having a MC with ABS helps too. And some MC's have a feature where if you hit either brake hard both brakes will activate at the same time. I just forgot what that feature is called.

Why didnt you make your brother wear boots? Foot injuries are the most common for beginners.

Haha, first and only injury was going wide on a turn and wedging my foot between a street sign and my pegs, and it was within my first month of riding for sure.
