As the brother of a low functioning autistic brother and being autistic myself seeing stuff like this is not only distressing but very worrying, I can't help but see him in Josh and the idea of someone manipulating a vulnerable mentally handicapped relative is always a worry for the family of the person. I can only hope that Josh gets out of this soon and gets through his substance abuse issues, seeing it breaks my heart.

Knowing a couple of people who are either diagnosed or clearly neurodivergent, they are very easily manipulated by awful actors who will absolutely take advantage of them and yet they are incapable of seeing them as the terrible people they are and instead considers them good friends. As a personal anecdote, the CEO of my former company was clearly autistic, and he eventually got a couple of absolute douchebags into his life which got top positions despite being completely unqualified for anything like that. They ended up plundering the whole company of any value and ran it to the ground with him, one of them even being gifted the CEOs Tesla. Despite all of this and the attempt by good actors to convince him to get rid of them, he refused as he considered them great people who were very kind to him. I see Joshua as a younger version of him. Both are clearly very intelligent people who could have had a far better life. But they are their own worst enemy, and sadly they both share the alcoholism.

Josh is an alcoholic you can’t just shove him into rehab he has to go willingly. Josh has no support system and the people he is around like Mr based want to watch him crash and burn.
