The diagram/animation you show at 2:00 is wrong because the liquid (blue) should be below the top of the cental out pipe not above as shown or it would already begin to exit.
@lunakid126 жыл бұрын
The toilet, as an example of the "same" principle, is a very confusing choice: its point is to NEVER let the siphon suck all the water out from the bowl -- the exact opposite of what the P. cup does (i.e. draining out ALL the liquid from the bowl, once the current starts).
@paulgoddard738510 ай бұрын
It is the cistern that is an example of the same principle, not the bowl.

If you tipped it in the wrong direction while drinking it could it all spill out?

@Roland L'Heureux Why does it not spill? It seems like if you tilted it towards the hole, it would reach the top of the protrusion earlier, and overflow. Is this not the case?
@virusweb70804 жыл бұрын
@@davidcoletta3332 The communicating vessels works because there is an equal amount of air pressure on every vessel. In this cup, this also works because there is an opening at the bottom which fills the little tube with air. But when you pass the chamber, the current water stops air from getting inside. So the air pressure pushing the water outside the cup will continue to push it until the chamber gets empty. When you tilt the cup, the air cannot provide a perpendicular pressure, so it is not enough to push the whole water.

Question, could this method help transport water upward into places like the top of hills or into tanks higher above it? Like, if we had a large tank and used this method and fill the tank up to a certain level. An that forces water out of the tank via the small tube. An then have that tube go up a pipe and into a higher tank.
@russellcunning8 жыл бұрын
Atmospheric pressure plays no part. It is purely gravity. The only place where any pressure plays a part is in initially filling the pipe if it is filled by reducing pressure in the pipe. If, however, the pipe is filled by immersing it in the liquid, then pressure, atmospheric or other, plays no part. Siphons work in complete vacuums too, so pressure is not the driving force.
@russellcunning8 жыл бұрын
+ScienceHook Hi. Siphons do work in vacuum, but don't work where there is no gravity. If by 'on earth' you are referring to a place with gravity, then I can see the reference to 'on earth'. I don't see the relevance of 'in vacuum too'. Vacuum can be created on earth.
@ProtonsTalk8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Cunning Sorry, I assumed vacuum as space. Atmospheric pressure does play a part in siphon. Since, we're talking about cohesive compressible liquid, we can't use Bernoulli's equation for Siphon. So, atmospheric pressure won't cancel out. Bernoulli's equation is the best approximation but it's not completely accurate. I also didn't tell anything about velocity and acceleration which can be an important factor in the tube, depending on its thickness and liquid. So, same system in atmosphere and in vacuum will work differently. There are a lot of factors affecting a siphon that makes it confusing. Please read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siphon
@russellcunning8 жыл бұрын
+ScienceHook While I disagree with your opinion, I respect your right to have it. None of this discussion takes away from how fascinating and usefull siphons are, regardless of whether it is gravity or pressure. But think about this - atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, and increases as you go lower. The at;mospheric pressure at the lower end of the siphon is (agreed, infinitesimally) greater than that at the higher end. If atmospheric pressure played a role, the siphon should go backwards... but gravity pulls the liquid down. There is a situation when atmospheric pressure would play a role - if, for some unfathomable reason, a person wanted a siphon to go higher than the height of liquid (let's say water) that atmospheric pressure could support against gravity's pull. This would cause the liquid to cavitate (boil) and a partial vacuum full of water vapour, thus breaking the siphon. In the case of water at standard temperature and pressureis around 10 metres. Cohesion doesn't play any significant role in siphons, but does play a major role in capillary action.
@ProtonsTalk8 жыл бұрын
+Russell Cunning I agree. Also, pressure can be significant if we create a siphon for high density liquid putting it in a system of slightly lower density. Cohesion is important to create capillary effect and pulling the liquid up in left side tube. There can literally be a lot of cases. We can't really generalise. I read a lot of articles before making this video. All of them were either contradicting each other or leaving it without any proper conclusion. Siphon indeed is a fascinating topic.

Why do I love this TTS voice so much!?
@ProtonsTalk7 жыл бұрын
This is probably the best TTS software I found. I also use many filters to get the best out of it. These were actually my starting videos, so there are still some problems. However, new videos will have almost natural sounding TTS voice. I'll be using machine learning in new audios for more natural output. People have gotten into a habit of watching fancy science videos with great presenters. That's why I get a lot of backlash about audio. But they don't know that as a programmer, KZbin is my experiment base for TTS as well. Thanks for the first positive comment about the sound :D
