The only video on youtube addressing this issue without the typical boot or stitch suggestion👍 My grand sport race tire still has a cut in it, i just made sure the inner tube patch was directly aligned with the cut on the tire😂, seems to be holding out so far. Ill try this hack out until i upgrade my tires next spring

A bit more ground for you. The tyre from the video has done ~11 thousand kms for now. It might have done the same without the glue plug, but the plug gives some extra confidence!

My neighbor just put on new tires, hit a piece of glass first time down the driveway. Same looking cut as yours, so we will try your hack. Thanks.

Welcome, hope it helps a bit.

As a commuter rider who encounters lots of glass, every tire I have gets at least one like this at some point during its life. I just keep an eye on it for bulging and if it bulges more than a couple millimeters, I replace it. I use tire liners, which kind of function as a continuous boot, and reduces the bulging.

What is your tire favorite as a commuter? I have used Schwalbe Marathon Racer for commuting and cannot imagine something like this happening. They seemed almost bulletproof (and heavy).

@@ZavyalovCycling When the GP5000's came out, I bought a bunch of GP4000's cheap. I'm finishing off the last one. I hope the GP5000's are about the same as the 4000's when it comes to doing this. That's my summer tire. For winter I use the Continental GP 4 season. It doesn't do this. My flats are mostly from metal things like wires from steel belted radials or staples. Both tires, used with tire liners, provide good protection against glass. I usually get more than 1,000 miles of urban riding between flats. I don't make a lot of power, so I appreciate the lower rolling resistance of a sport type tire.

Funny how it is always the gp5000 when I search for this. And guess what, I have a gp5000. 😂

haha I came here after getting a 2cm slice in my newish GP5k. I think it is too big of a cut to patch though

Same thing happened to me, Continental 5000 700 x 28 clincher road tyres first time out. Probably glass or road metal cut into side of tyre fixed with inner patch, cleaned outer small tear and roughened surface. Sealed down with Loctite 406 Adessive, put finger pressure on damage via a tissue, marked wheel rim with a small spot of permanent marker ink to keep an eye on repair. Tissue wears off on first ride, all good. Saved replacing tyre at NZ$100.00

I had this problem on Vittoria Zaffiro tyre, big chunk of glass- I repaired with a "boot" from the inside but as you say doesn't help keep out other hazards. Problem with that tyre is it cost £12, and repair glue like Black Witch is most likely more than that price! Worth it on a GP5000 to try and save it!
@ZavyalovCycling Жыл бұрын
I took the cheap glue for ~1.2£. The price of Black Witch equals your Zaffiro and it is too much even for GP5000, unless you repair a hundred of them 😂

I have been using tubeless tyres on my road bike for several years now, and I repair such tyre cuts with the dynaplug tool. No chewing glue is needed and at the same time I do it in the middle of the bike course. And I haven't even put on an inner tube in several years. Which means I don't even carry tubes any more.

Thank you. I thought about this years ago, asked on a forum, and everyone said no so I did not try it. I don't have any of that glue. I wonder if epoxy would work. I guess if it is soft it may attract glass and stuff more than the cut itself. I have tried epoxy.

I tried melting the cuts with soldering iron, didn't work though, it kinda just smokes.

How long did you let this dry before riding on it?
@ZavyalovCycling Жыл бұрын
The manual asks for 24 hours.
@Martinik10 Жыл бұрын
can you give us some cheap glue alternatives? my gp-5000 crying now.
@ZavyalovCycling Жыл бұрын
Hi! Just look for some locally produced or modestly branded "neoprene glue". Imported and widely known glues will normally be much more expensive.

You’re taking your life in your own hands, especially if it’s a front wheel. Get a new tire.
