Q&A / DYING MY HAIR WITH OVERTONE PURPLE FOR BROWN HAIR

disclaimer: i can't believe i have to say this but these products do not lighten your hair, they can only give you a subtle tint of color on top of your dark hair, which is most visible in the sun. therefore, your dark hair will still look the same indoors and everywhere else. this is a great alternative for those who want to experiment with colors but don't want to damage their hair. if you want to achieve super vibrant colors, the only way is by bleaching your hair.
since i've been getting some questions regarding these products, i wanted to make a follow-up video and address them here and hopefully provide additional information that will be helpful to any of you who are curious about trying these products out~ if i missed anything, just let me know in the comments. thanks for watching!

Thanks for the update! I actually ordered some purple through your previous video earlier this week and was just looking for more Overtone on brown hair videos while I wait for the shipment, so this is super convenient! Great to see more lighting conditions, I'm super excited to try this out! Edit: Update 9/17/19, so Overtone totally worked on my hair! Very similar to the results shown in this video, fairly normal dark brown looking in most indoor lighting, but noticeably purple in sunlight and some certain backlighting (usually in restrooms weirdly enough!). Anyway, totally happy with it.

Back in my high school days I used Manic Panic color and it did kind of get all over everything new hair colors are much easier to use. Oh that is great that your hair feels softer after the color that is unusual. I like the overtone effect. Interesting and informative to watch. How often do you wash your hair and do you use cold water? And when you rinse out all the product and your hair is wet you still don't experience any bleeding onto clothes or towels? And when you sweat does the color bleed (weird question but I've heard that happening). Thank you so much for your videos, I've been debating doing this for a long time!

Hi! I wash my hair every 2-3 days. The pigment in these products are designed to withstand hot temperatures, so warm/hot showers are a-okay!! As long as the product is fully rinsed out, there is no bleeding. I only experience staining when I miss a section and I have to go back and wash it out. I haven’t experienced bleeding while sweating, but I usually have my hair up when it’s hot (haven’t got the color on any of my clothes so far). Hope this helps and good luck! Thanks for watching xx

this is so helpful!! quick question i’m not sure if u know the answer but it’s worth a shot lol: if i have a subtle brown balayage in my dark hair and i want to use a semi permanent colored dye (like purple) when the dye washes out will i still have that balayage? thanks!!

hi Alexa!! overtone’s products actually aren’t dyes, they’re pigmented conditioners so they don’t contain any harsh chemicals. semi-permanent dyes don’t change the highlights/lowlights in your hair (unless they contain ammonia). they will just give your balayage a tint of color. with enough washes, the color should fade eventually. if any color remains that you want to remove, you can use a color remover (i would avoid this since they’re pretty stripping) and then tone your hair. i hope this helped! thanks for watching 💜

Hi thanks for the video! How about going to the pool/beach?? Will it bleed color if I get my hair wet in these conditions?

The last time I was in a pool, I did not experience any bleeding. I personally haven’t gotten my hair wet at the beach yet. I would imagine some bleeding during vigorous swimming, but not enough to wash out the color entirely. That’s where the daily conditioner comes in, you use it every time you wash your hair to maintain the color and replace the pigments you lose so your hair color stays vibrant.

Clarifying shampoos usually arent too great for colored hair lol, it's supposed to clean out oil and product buildup in your hair

ahh i see, i’ve been looking for a shampoo that is suitable for my oily scalp since it gets itchy and dirty quite fast. my priority is getting my hair + scalp as clean as possible and then going in with the coloring conditioner after. i want to test out more shampoos if anyone has any recommendations (-:

@@shirlesque I bet Sally's Beauty has some sort of color safe shampoo for oily hair. The Generic Brand is great in general, it's like a dupe for most Paul Mitchell products. My friend found a color safe dandruff one, I bet they have something that would work for ya 😊 good luck!
