Another mindset of information hoarders is that they feel like the new guy(s) might break things - but news flash when you have a new person cowboying your network learning on their own, that's way more dangerous then just helping them out with real time assistance.

Another version of the hoarder is the very experience individuals will "just do it themselves" because its faster and then no one learns anything - also very annoying to deal with. This one happens even in a big organization/department.

About 6 in general IT and 3 in senior networking environment but I've seen it all. I find that duration tends to make ppl salty, prob due to boredom and lack of growth but then their unhappy and dont want to help ppl or find it annoying.

And actually on this subject as someone whose been on a two person team in this situation. You really have two options. Carve out your own space and learn it on your own or through your network of friends or Leave the position and when you leave make sure the boss knows why. I chose the autodidact route, it's still frustrating but I just learned to live with it.

There's def alot of miserable ppl in IT because of the stress that employers put on them. Ie, wearing many hats. Oh, and if you haven't seen it all...I'm on my 19th yr in the business and I still see stuff...

I work as a software developer and I find this with some colleagues in one case a colleague deliberately tells me incorrect information which then leads me to screwing up.

Information Technology Q & A Show thanks! The funny thing is that I am 47 so in some ways I am not that new. I think the one thing I have learned is that software businesses are some of the worst places to work.

I consider myself information hoarder, yet i dont have problem with sharing my knowledge, to me its more like collecting data so i could see bigger picture and make the right decission in any aspect of my life becouse knowledge is power. and knowing that i know nothing in comparson to vastness of univers makes me feel like i need to know more. I see people angry, hatefull becouse of something they do not understeand, and that is what I do not want to become.

You know those people who stay at a company long past their expiration date? They have all this information power based on their time at the company. I really believe, they want to be respected. But they fail to receive that respect, for whatever reason. Information hoarding fails to get you any respect. You aren’t helpful and you resort to lowly power tactics to feel important. Just miserable people. You can’t help them.
