To me, elegance is simply when sophistication meets subtlety. I agree resoundingly with Hugo when he points out that a lot of young men who are starting their style journey fall into the trap of thinking that to be elegant you need to wear old-fashioned/dated clothing with an abundance of needlessly complicated accessories. The issue with such a thing is that it very often oversteps what is culturally appropriate in our day and age and you run the risk of looking like a clown with all your extraneous/excessive details. You can very quickly turn your outfit into a costume! The purpose of elegant clothing in my mind is to draw attention to the wearer, not to the clothes itself. One thing that my grandfather said to me that stuck in my mind was "The man should wear the clothes; not the clothes the man" Yet again, another thoroughly enjoyable video. Looking forward to the next. - Max

rky But then again, it depends on the level of maturity and confidence of style of each person to what extent this is true. Some designers, like Yves Saint Laurent, produced extremely strong clothes, of unseen elegance and ostentation. Only a few people could wear them, as you indeed had to be an extraordinary person to wear them, and to not have them making you disappear. But these people then had an incomparable aura, a true elegance, because their clothes matched their personality, their confidence, their way of being. These people would always resonate, fascinate and simply inspire, which is what elegance is all about. So I’d say, rather than categorically deny strong clothes, that this balance should be there. Because it would be a shame for people with that amount of elegance not to live their potential. What a loss for humanity it would be, otherwise.

Thanks as always, Hugo, for your sage insights. I'm so glad you mentioned the thrifting aspect to fine and thoughtful dressing for the aware men among us. There are treasures (at least here in Los Angeles) in the thrift and consignment shops. Handmade jackets (I have a rack full) that might require the slightest adjustment, but the fun is in the hunt. For pennies on the dollar, too. That makes the effort so worth it. I'm steaming a jacket now as I watch your video. It's such a true expression of ones self, great clothing. Our faces to the world, so to speak.

Another masterpiece by Hugo, Sonia and the whole Sartorial Talks team ! The ease in which you explain your point of view as well as the idea of not dwelling on ourselves but rather use this so called "Elegance" to define a behavior rather then an outfit is amazing. You said correctly, my Father is wearing jeans and T shirt to work (with Crooks) so I had no guidance at all - it's easy to get lost in the fashion aspect of Elegance rather then understanding there is more to it then the cloths themselves, who are merely a vessel to a greater cause (such as being kind, caring, polite to others, etc.) I learn a lot from each and every video you make - keep them going please! Thank you, Amir

Thank you so much for stating the obvious so eloquently- that it is very easy to become unbalanced with a focus on ME and selfishness when traveling down the path to dressing well. Interesting insight about ego there. I quite agree with that as I have seen people who are acting holier-than-thou when they think they have learned everything about style, while I think it is pretty much impossible to learn "everything" about style. Like you've said, it's about refining. I think it's a part of the learning curve , which I think most people have gone through, when they're at the mid-uphill of the curve, they will be full of ego and arrogance. Maybe it's a big homework for the Sartorial community to "fix" this kind of behaviour.

Hugo, I absolutely love your channel, and you’ve been one of the inspirations to my brother and I. We left the corporate world several years ago and bought an old shoe repair shop in Nashville. We’ve always loved well-made shoes, and it was our dream to own our own business. We’ve grown it into the most reputable shop in town. Like you said, if it weren’t for a resurgence in men wearing nice shoes and clothing, so many shops like mine could possibly go out of business. In a world of cheap, throwaway clothing/shoes, it’s always nice when folks remember that there are still families relying on quality garments in order to make a living. Also, as we tell so many of our customers, if you pay a little more for a good quality shoe, it will last for years, as opposed to being thrown away a year later. Again, keep up the great work!

Thank you for taking the time to address these questions, sir. I wanted to share my thoughts on your answers. While not quite as young as the men you probably refer to, I am also a member of the group whose fathers didn't teach them about men's style. I don't hold that against my father. He's a good man, and had other priorities. I'm glad that circumstances have conspired to help me discover fashion and refine my style. If I'm blessed with children, I would like to pass that knowledge on to them. Perhaps style is both discovered and innate. For a long time, I had a vague idea of what look appealed to me, but didn't possess the nerve to try it. Since then, I have learned some of the rules, and follow them. Mostly. I have been fortunate enough to get some input when I was trying too hard. It is amazing how transparent people can be when they are wearing something they are uncomfortable in. I've seen that stiffness you've mentioned more than once. I believe you are absolutely correct with the aspects of men's fashion you mentioned here: audacity, frugal-ness and humility. It takes audacity to defy the norm, whether it's far from a fashion-hub or in the center of it. Being frugal instills a better understanding of the clothing and services purchased, and any investment should be well-researched. This journey has helped me to remain humble. I remember how daunting the journey can be, and I'm aware of the technical flaws in what I wear. I don't think there's anything wrong with "peacocking" a tiny bit. After all, we are dressing to look good and not merely blend-in. This only becomes a problem when it comes at the expense of others.

Thank you for posting this video. The creation, evolution, and refinement of one's style is a continuous process. I have made many mistakes and they have cost me a small sum of money and have filled bags of clothing for donation to charity. However, with mistakes come wisdom and the advice to proceed slowly and not to go too far too fast when building a wardrobe is spot on. On the topic of ego, there is a difference between self esteem and self importance. If one has good friends/relationships, they can function as a barometer to keep one in balance and harmony. I look forward to your next video.

Excellent commentary, Hugo. I use online tailors, shrewdly shop Ebay for shoes, alter shirts I find at thrift stores, and have become fairly adept at shoe polishing. I also have this to say to young men. An approach to elegance can lead to arrogance. Pride is always our downfall, so remember allways, just because you look better doesnt mean you are better.
@dominicweber6 жыл бұрын
To me, elegance is something different to just attention to detail and a clear etiquette. A person without any groomed or calculated appearance can be tremendously elegant. Elegance is that little something that differs you from others by being effortlessly beautiful in how you act, talk, live. It’s when you are perfectly in tune with yourself, and have a style that is perfect resonation of yourself. Elegance is when someone not only feels beautiful, but is by exuding this feeling. Some designers had the power of making their customers and models feel like that with their creations. People like Dior, Chanel, or most of all Balenciaga. And that’s why their legend is still this alive.

Haha, that's a good and honest question : I personally prefer to tie my ties a little bit "loose", with a dimple and even, sometimes, with the small blade slightly longer than the front one. It's my taste and my little "twist" that brings to my outfits a little dose of imperfection that I cherish. You can read more about this on our website here : parisiangentleman.co.uk/2016/03/27/neckwear-and-nonchalance/ I hope I answered your question, Cheers, Hugo

I really appreciate your work, it's unique where we not only get the essentials but also the philosophical approach behind that, the craftsmanship and efforts required for making masterpiece... I urge you, may you make videos specifically on how to build wardrobe, color selection, texture so we can start our own journey form zero. 💖 Love form India... 😊

Love the southern style, wider notch lapels, less padding and clean look! For those of us who live in the UK, how can we get our hands on something like that - brand wise. Thanks

Good morning, I think you can find some nice ready-to-wear made in Italy at Richard Anderson on Savile Row. His RTW is extremely nice and has a strong Italian accent. You can drop my name if needed (Parisian Gentleman), it should not hurt you :-) , Cheers, Hugo

Enjoy your talks immensely, and the comment about peacocks was perfect! Yes, the peacocks are fun to watch! lol
@SARTORIALTALKS6 жыл бұрын
They are fun to watch and most of them are good people though. They just have an ego problem to fix (or a female to find, like real peacocks). Cheers, Hugo

Hugo, Would you be willing to do a video on the colors of suits? Like when is it appropriate to wear a tan suit? Or brown? etc.

Intéressant la question de l'ego. Il faut garder à l'esprit que certes le style est passionnant mais après tout cela reste des vêtements qui pourront tout au plus servir à mettre en valeur notre personnalité, pas à en créer une de toute pièce.

You know, I didn't know there was a rebirth, renaissance of the young generation returning to suits and suiting, especially looking to their Grandfathers until watching your tow Vedas, including this one. I bet I am older then them, though still look to my paternal Grandfather, and surprised to find out I am not the only one. What makes my story have a twist is my maternal Grandfather is the reason my Dad even had sport coats because he expected the husband of his daughter to dress well for special occasions. As a child the jackets were very memorable as had amazing texture because Dad is allergic to wool. My paternal Grandfather taught me when 12 how to tie a tie because I asked. I can see what you mean Hugo going from simple (ex. navy sport coat as a teen), to wild (ex. vintage three piece polyester with flares as late teen/young adult), then to refined (ex. subtle pin stripe two pieces in my 30s). Look forward to more videos.

I miei preferiti? Gli spezzati con le giacche grigio intrecciate con il nero o spigate o pied de poule. gilet azzurro o blu, anche grigio perla e pantaloni blu o grigio medio.

This man is elegant. The same clothing worn by the guy from Gentleman's Gazette would look "trying too hard" to me.
@SARTORIALTALKS6 жыл бұрын
Dear Damon, the clothing you're talking about is the simplest you can imagine : a blue suit and a white shirt with a club tie. I don't think this outfit can look "trying too hard" on anyone. Thank you anyway for the compliment. Hugo

My experience tells me to be true to myself, to buy clothes that I feel emotionally comfortable wearing. Whenever I've stepped outside of that mindset, I've not worn those clothes for very long. My wardrobe may not be the highest fashion or the best brands, but it's all in good taste and I like wearing these clothes. In fact, the cut of the new suits I see in ads just seem too tight and too small so I could never follow that trend. I'll just be a bit old fashioned but happy and comfortable 'in my own skin'.
