The difficulty director Werner Herzog had in shooting the film 'Fitzcarraldo' is legendary. He's just released writing from his notebooks during that shoot

Just an incredible chap with an inner stability that illuminates from within. A visionary filmaker and an authentic human being. Great interview-will revisit Fitzcarrldo as soon as I can

Well with all those problems on set, I'd have to say that the end result was worth it. Fitzcarraldo is one of my favourite films.

I love how he smile's when he mentions being shot, then dismisses it as nothing new. Wish more people could be composed,

By all great respect, Francis Ford Coppola also financed his "Apocalypse Now" fully by himself.

I keep forgetting Herzog once got shot during in an interview. Then he kept going as if nothing had happened, I admire this man.

Despite its excelent title, the book could well have been called Triumph des Willens (the Triumph of Will), but... well.... maybe Leni Riefenstall and Adolf H. had the copyright on that. I LOVE Herzog's apparently humble, gentle little persona. He is more wily and weird than all the amazon put together.

Just like Jack London once said, I am glad that I am alive, if, for no other reason, because of the joy of seeing "Fitzcarraldo".

***** I don't think his comment was ego-filled or offensive. He was merely speaking as to how he believes he would react to being in a war as a proof of statement to why he was able to handle his high stress film making. He wasn't saying anything negative to those who do come back with the many troubles a veteran may be burdened with.

Note the German style jacket. A touch of the mountains. I tried on a pair of Brioni slacks from the 60's once. I can't begin to tell you of all the extra things those pants had that set them apart. For one, they were designed to never slip down when you were standing. Even without a belt. And the fabric....unreal.

I actually think that the interview deals more with the responses and the person than the interviewer. :)

@GreenshirtMr1023 Herzog said, during the filming, that he didn't know what he would do next, as he was unfit for directing people and films. people got killed, people were attacked.. and then there's Kinski insulting the locals by not wanting to drink out of their bowl without it being washed first. how Fitzcarraldo differs from Herzog becomes unclear in the documentary Burden of Dreams.

@Valerian1 I agree, of course. Arrogant and 'macho' on Herzog's behalf. to come out with such a statement, no? A sensitive soul is ALWAYS (and justly) affected by the horro of man's self-destruction.
