Does your complete mouth care system applicable for someone with deep pockets classified as gum disease. Regular diligent cleaning and no bad breath however would love to apply all products you advise but worried about the antiseptic listerine mouthwash since it contains alcohol. Is it not best to perhaps substitute that with an alcohol-free original listerine?

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes, the ideal time to begin using xylitol is in pregnancy and followed up as baby teeth erupt into the mouth. I encourage pregnant women to use xylitol to improve their own mouth health. Then, as their infant begins to erupt baby teeth - to wipe these teeth with crystals of granular xylitol dissolved in water. Next stage, this is to give preschool kids Zellies xylitol mints as soon as they start eating solid food......they've had a xylitol program like this in Finland for 60 years. Thanks again.

Thank you for your message - much appreciated. I've had decades of experience helping patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. My Complete Mouth Care System prior to treatment is fantastic, and Zellies mints during the treatment can help prevent mucositis -which can often be a very painful side effect. I took years trying to persuade oncology doctors to suggest Zellies so we could save patients from unnecessary dental and oral problems during cancer treatments - but only a handful showed any interest at all. It is so sad that people suffer such unnecessary pain and discomfort. My Complete Mouth Care System is very useful for people with dry mouth - even Sjogren's patients. Thank you Dr. Phillips for your dedication and persistent exploration of Xylitol. Is there a downside to chewing more that 4 or 5 pieces in a day? Also, under what situation would one be 'better off' with a mint vs a piece of gum? Thanks again for your work!
@dr.elliephillips
@dr.elliephillips Жыл бұрын
Studies show that the ideal amount of xylitol for reducing plaque is around 6.8 g per day. Practical use of Xylitol, however, indicates that there is flexibility and that for most of us somewhere between 5 and 10 g per day works very well. You are in a great spot with 4 to 5 pieces of gum or 8-14 mints. per day. You don’t have to obsess over having an exact amount. My experience shows that it is more important to have a little bit frequently throughout the day, and the best timing is at the conclusion of eating and drinking at a meal. Larger amounts of xylitol are used in Europe to prevent osteoporosis and some of these dosages go as high as 40 to 50 g per day. Studies indicate there is no benefit to oral health above 10 g per day. Mints are equally as effective as chewing gum, so it is just a question of which you prefer. I mix and match personally using gum after a meal as a way to freshen up my mouth and get rid of little pieces of food that may be caught around my teeth. But in the car, or when I am traveling or just need something after a coffee, I would reach for a mint.

Guided Biofilm Therapy appears to be similar to a traditional approach - just uses chemicals instead of physical cleaning and antibiotics. I believe that both methods allow recurrence in 6-12 months. My Complete Mouth Care System of o-t-c products will lower periodontal pathogens in 12-24 weeks and cure periodontal disease with sustained results. I know of no other way to achieve sustained outcomes with an easy to use home care system. I did an interview with Dr. Corky Willhite - a cosmetic dentist who recommends my Complete Mouth Care System here on KZbin. Here is a link to my website if you would like to lean more about this strategy I have recommended for 50 years: drellie.com/

Great video once again Dr. Ellie. Can I ask for clarity on the use of home use; waterpik dental flosser please 🙏🏻
@dr.elliephillips
@dr.elliephillips Жыл бұрын
There are certainly occasions when a water flosser can be a useful piece of equipment. A teenager with braces springs into my mind. The problem I see with this equipment is that it is often recommended to people who have periodontal disease and pocketing around their teeth. The pressure of the waterpik appears to keep pockets from healing themselves. I often hear my DDS friends talking about how they have reduced periodontal pathogens in their patients’ mouths, but they are unable to get the pockets to heal. I blame the pressure of the waterpik. To get periodontal pockets to heal themselves requires the regrowth of fibers between the gum and the tooth surface. These fibers are 100th the width of a hair on your head. They could be easily broken by the pressure of a waterpik. When people use my complete mouth care system, the first rinse that I recommend -Closys/ Ultradex appears able to reach the depths of the pockets perfectly - without this hydro-pressure. This is why I prefer to suggest the use of Closys as a way to bathe and rinse your mouth, followed by stimulating gum massage, and the final parts of my complete mouth care system. The results I have witnessed show me that a water pic for someone with periodontal disease is not only unnecessary, but may diminish the healing process. (Remember, I am recommending the use of my complete mouth care system in preference to the waterpik). For someone with a healthy mouth, and who has no pocketing at all, I see no problem if they like to use the waterpik

Xylitol is good for digestive health & is said to help prevent osteoporosis. It stabilizes blood glucose and has 1/3 rd the calories of sugar. You only need 1/5th teaspoon at each occasion. I would eat it and enjoy it! I sometimes recommend dipping a strawberry or raspberry into granular xylitol (these are some of the fruits that naturally contain xylitol) and simply eat this as a tooth- beneficial ending at the end of a meal.

This great. I am a scientist so I’ve not been able to fully get behind Ellie’s educational material (don’t get me wrong I’m using Xylitol because Ellie’s logic and motivation alone are quite convincing) but now the two of you are going through the research and I’m hearing a lot of similar trails and tribulations to what’s happening in the medical community. I follow Peter Attia MD closely and think if his research team could pick up on this and he gave a podcast on the Drive then I think you could see a very wide audience reached. He has had one podcast on oral health care and while it recognizes the issue of inflammation it was down the lines of scrap and floss.

How many Zellie mints after a meal? How many gums? Thanks
@SunrayStar
@SunrayStar 2 ай бұрын
1 gram of xylitol per dose - check your label, but usually that's either 1 piece of gum or 2 mints (some are different). Take at least 6-7 grams total per day, spread throughout the day in small 1 gram doses. Use Xylitol after every meal, snack or drink of liquid, and then do not eat or drink anything else for at least 1 hour or more. Right before bed is an excellent time to take it, too.
@Peleski

Xylitol is a frequent sweetener in sugar free gums. I'm a bit concerned that Dr Heff has a line of "remarkable mints". It seems like a conflict of interest to providing impartial information. To wit, I'm really hopeful about this easy "miracle sugar" but I hope it doesn't become another echinacea.

There are a number of good ways to clean retainers, but one way Dr. Ellie has mentioned is to brush them with a little Crest toothpaste with a separate toothbrush that you don't use in your mouth. It's fine to use a cheap generic toothbrush for brushing retainers.
@SunrayStar

Dr Phillips, I started your dental Care Program three weeks ago. It is my understanding that Xylitol controls damaging bacteria by controlling the pH in the mouth. I started testing the pH in my mouth a week ago. The only time it becomes acid is when I drink beer and if I swish normal pH water from the tap for a little while, after drinking beer, my saliva returns to normal pH. The rest of the day, I can test my mouth and it is always between 6.5 and 7 pH. I did this testing on days when I ate no Xylitol and on days when I did. There seemed to be little, if any, difference that I could tell. So, my question is, since my saliva is almost always normal pH, do I really need to take xylitol?

Xylitol comes in mints, gum, powder and granules/crystals. No matter which kind it is, you put it in the mouth in small doses (1 gram each time) numerous times throughout the day, for a total of at least 6-7 grams per day. Always use it right after every meal, snack or drink of liquid (even water), and then do not eat or drink anything else for at least 1 hour or more. When you use it, allow a mint to dissolve, chew a piece of gum for 2-5 minutes and then spit out, or swish with 1/4 teaspoon of loose granules/crystals. The other ways you mentioned, just simply eating it, using xylitol toothpaste or mouthwash, or drinking it in water, will not really help your oral health very much at all.

Recent studies suggest erythritol is more effective than xylitol. Whats your take on that ??
@dr.elliephillips
@dr.elliephillips Жыл бұрын
Cargill is a wealthy company and it owns the supply of erythritol, which is why they have funded a number of studies - often omitting important facts ( you may have to dig to find the financial links with Cargill but they are usually somewhere - often at the end of a long study). I also wonder if Cargill have any associations with the ADA. Xylitol has over 100 years of clinical use and safety - in Finland xylitol has been a Public Health measure for over 60 years. Xylitol is expensive, is a known prebiotic, and has been shown to improve digestive health by increasing the production of butyrate in the gut. Erythritol, on the other hand, is relatively inexpensive, but it has been linked with increases in belly fat, and other potentially negative side effects. I do not recommend erythritol and my experiences with xylitol make me confident that xylitol is the ideal product, used appropriately, for oral health. Here is a link to a recent article from the Cleveland Clinic about the negative effects of erythritol: newsroom.clevelandclinic.org/2023/02/27/cleveland-clinic-study-finds-common-artificial-sweetener-linked-to-higher-rates-of-heart-attack-and-stroke/

Dr. Ellie, I drink about 10 cups of tea and 4 coffees daily with normal sugar. I have lots of bad teeth. Thanks for letting people know that sugar is bad for our teeth. So instead of sugar would it be good to drink tea while biting on a date? Can the sweet taste in dates, apples, grapes and plums damage the teeth as well?

Dr. Phillips, I've just discovered you on KZbin and made an order on Amazon for the products (not living in the States at this time). I didn't realize you had created a xylitol product (Zellies) which I am happy to buy! Anyway, I looked for Xylitol in general. There are many, I chose one. I am hoping it will work (PUR). It appears this protocol works on chemistry, building healthy oral microbiome and eliminating unhealthy bacteria, if I understand correctly, we are to use each product in order without rinsing in between so that the ingredients work together. Xylitol chewed after meals and snacks for 5 minutes. It will be a week before I receive everything. My dentist consistently tells me my oral care is great, but I feel my longstanding gum recession is getting worse. Especially lately...I've been trying to add apple cider vinegar to my diet (with a straw) and I feel it in the teeth recession areas, Did you suggest perhaps a bit of cheese to counter the acidity? Thanks for helping us, I am praying to reverse the gum recession!

When and how often should you have Xylitol Dr Ellie? After brushing teeth in the morning should you have xylitol straight away or leave it a few hours?
@dr.elliephillips
@dr.elliephillips Жыл бұрын
Xylitol stimulates conditions in your mouth that allow natural healing. You can have a Zellies mint anytime - but the ideal time is directly after meals. Then do not eat or drink for an hour - to allow the xylitol to do its work. In the morning, when you wake, it is not necessary to clean your teeth or have xylitol, unless you want to. Yes, it is vital to clean your teeth right before going to bed at night - and after this, to not to eat or drink anything. This allows the benefits of your oral care routine to work all night long. (I promote my specific Complete Mouth Care System). In the morning, try to find a good time when you will be able to enjoy an extended period of not eating or drinking after you clean your teeth. Often, if you clean your teeth on waking, you will wash away the benefits as you go to have breakfast or coffee. Maybe rethink the timing of your morning tooth cleaning for maximum benefit. Thanks so much for a great question. For more information about timing, and my Complete Mouth Care System - you may like to visit the oral health bootcamp on my website. Here is a link: drellie.com/

Anyone like me with Sjogren's Syndrome has a losing battle to fight here and add to that multiple medications especially at night which can dry us out anymore which may be unavoidable, what is your advice for people like me to preserve our teeth especially when our mucosa burn so easily from so many mouth products? I use Ultradex to keep away sulfur producing bacteri, i use highly fluoridated toothpaste Duraphat, i use pilocerpine medication to stimulate salivary glands but it wears off within a couple of hours sleep.

I would always try to reverse a cavity - even if you are told it will not reverse. Even making the enamel harder with your efforts will make the final restoration better, easier for the dentist and less likely to upset the nerves inside your tooth. I suggest an easy to use strategy for at home care - and usually it can reverse a cavity within 6 months. It would be worth a try - providing you do not experience pain from this tooth at the moment. Here is a link for a free downloadable booklet about this strategy: drellie.com/

Hi Dr. Ellie. I tried Xylitol but it makes me feel nauseous. I have been sucrose free for so long (over 20 years) that the sweetness of Xylitol is overpowering to my system. I do like cheese, so I now finish a meal with a small piece of cheese. I am also using your complete mouthcare system (less the Zellies) can I expect the same results without the Xylitol?

Root canals are needed when teeth die. Nothing I know can bring a dead tooth back to life. On the other hand, it is never too late to improve and turn oral health around so that cavities and dead teeth never happen again. Here is a link to my website where you can down load a booklet and learn more: drellie.com/ Good luck on your journey.

Yes you can, you need 6 grams a teaspoon’s worth spread over 5-6 times a day. Say 1 gram at a time at the end of a meal or a drink, so you finish your meals and drinks off with 1 gram xylitol. Hope it helps.
