My dad grew up old order Mennonite. When he was young he had a horse hat would stand on his hind legs at his command while harnessed to the buggy. We have a picture. It was from the days when a picture wasn't a easy thing to take. The first time he ploughed he ran the cultivator over the rows because he was embarrassed on how crooked the furrows were. He has been gone now for 35 years. It's very interesting listening to a good horse guy. Jim is a smart guy.

My Father in law used to breed and work Shires in England and I had five or six light horses, I can't remember now I'm in my eighties, but he and I had lots of discussion about horses and how they are worked, so that video was a step back in time and gave me lots of laughs, thank you guys for taking me back to the eighties and nineties it was most enjoyable.

Lol! Had to chuckle at Jim's point that older horses are more sensible and his daughter added "like people!" When I first started farming I needed some help in the summer so thought about hiring a couple of boys for a few weeks. My Dad said to me: "Jim, remember this- when you hire one boy you've got half a man but when you hire two boys you ain't got nothin!"

In www1 the normal words for left & right were hek & gee. My great uncle knew that. So when he bought his new horse from the army he thought he was ok. Off he started but when he pulled on the reins and said woe the faster and faster it went until he was doing full gallop down the road. It would not stop. Then he had a bright idea, this was a battle hardened horse. It had been trained to ignore any yelling of woe or pulling on the reins. He yelled SQUAD HALT. The horse stopped immediately. This turned out to be one of the best horses he ever had. Family history.

So kind of you to welcome us into your home 🏡. The Q&A was very informative and interesting. Many years ago I became a rest equine farm for carriage horses from Boston, MA. The owners would rest them for a couple weeks then swap them for another pair. During this time I learned to harness and drive the team's. Once I went to Boston and spent the day and evening driving the horses around the city, it was exhilarating and exhausting.

There is sage wisdom for sure in what Jim said. I am not joking either or poking fun at him for saying it. “They get more sensible as they get older”. Generally true for people as well as horses. At least I feel more sensible at 64. My wife may argue the point on some occasions, although she may mistake hard headedness for not being very sensible. Really enjoy the channel.

Jim regarding what you say to your horses like careful step. Makes me think of when I was plowing in plowing matches. The teams were pretty close together. With that said I always have thought my horses when I ask them to go I say (Step Up ) this was a real advantage when at competition plowing matches as my team would never move when the fellow beside me said to his horse git up ect . I offten had comments how great my different commands was so helpful.

I would like to second Jim's opinion on people getting started should consider Haflingers. I have three. They eat much less than a full sized draft and are easier to harness. They are surprisingly strong for their size. I've personally seen four ponies out pull a HUGE draft team in a competition. Really impressive what ponies can do work wise!

Very informative! I agree fully with Jim's philosophy on keeping horses in shape. Most people dont know that the average horse doesnt fully mature until around 7-8 years old. I would work my trail horses 6 days a week whether or not they were on the trail. Trail riding for me didnt mean a casual easy going flower picking ride. It meant cross country over no trails. I believe in 6 days work and 1 day off for the horses. A horse enjoys working. Think about that. The horse will thank you. And,, much less vet bills keeping your horses in shape.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim yes Yosemite is the most beautiful place on earth. Both lower Yosemite and upper each offer different kinds of beauty. I was about ten years old my first trip. Now I am 78. Lol. But i made many many trips to yosemite over the years. I have both fond and heart breaking memories of Yosemite. i even wrote a book of the heartache. The book sits in the Yosemite library. A non fiction personal story involving twi of my horses. My lead quarter horse mare and her lover Bert., a quarter horse gelding. She knew how to pick them eh!! LOL.

An old cowboy once told me 'A Horse is Worth what the buyer will pay.' That covers it pretty precisely; that explains why you hear of some unproven horses going for 6-digit figures whilst proven (oughta be worth a Million-dollar) babysitter horses can end up being shipped across the border for doggie food. It's the available Buyer who makes or breaks the monetary value of a horse. Too bad it takes so many years (and so many horses) for innocent Buyers to build and understand 'perspective' and to finally learn what IS the Real value of 'a Horse.' But THAT is part of the Wisdom incurred from working with and living amongst Horses. Thanks for the great conversation. My favorite subject matter and I couldn't agree more with any of your words! God Bless you all!

Nice video. We have Dunkards here in Darke county Ohio, but they use horses only to hitch to buggys, but not to work in the field. They have tractors for most chores and yes even for most transportation. The horse and buggy is used when they go to church services. I believe the Suffolk Punch originated in Suffolk county England, and was used mostly for pulling beer wagons for delivery of kegs of beer to pubs.

In regards to showing any problems You are having with the horses such as what each horses is like or how they act or when teaching the colts. Also when admitting about having mites . One reason why I consistently watch your videos is because I like Jim's attitude of life in general he doesn't mince words and he doesn't intend to hurt or insult but in nowadays vernacular and culture you can hardly not communicate without hurting somebody's feelings and I really appreciate the fact that he holds his ground like when the question of the prices of the horses and he bluntly says it's nobody's business he's absolutely right. I and my other friends that watch this video respect that. that's like being lost in our culture. It's almost like Truth hurts sometimes, it's that simple. Like the vid will be anxiously waiting for the next time.

That is so true it isn’t anyones business what someone pays for something, you earned your money so it’s no one else’s business what you spend on something, I hate when someone ask me what I gave for something, it’s not their business, I didn’t ask them for the money.

I had a riding horse as a teenager and as an adult trained show horses for the public for several years. When trying to teach a novice rider to give commands to the horse, I realized that HOW the words were spoken was almost as important as the chosen words themselves. From my experience, I believe horses can hear the nervousness in the spoken words; if the rider is nervous and excited, the horses react the same. I notice that your commands are strong and confident. In an earlier video in which Brenda was in the woods and driving the horses, which became slightly unruly, her commands were excited and nervous sounding. As soon as you gave a more confident command, they instantly responded. Just a thought. Love your videos! I love the fact that your daughter is a teacher. As a result of having taught high school history for twenty-eight years, I know just how difficult the job is.

That was really interesting! I would be one to ask “How did you both meet?” We’re you married a short time when you moved to NY? Great idea to answer questions!
