You could look into Pendrakens 10mm they have a good AWI range. I play Age of Eagles which is meant for 15mm in 10 and just keep roughly the same base sizes.

Thanks for asking and answering my question... the main reason I asked about other conflicts is because I'm interested in the War of Spanish Succession, you mention that both Confederates and Union troops wore pretty much the same, well the WSS is practically the same.

@@warlordgames Also Pike & Shotte English Civil War / 30 Years War figures would work well as the majority of troops looked very much the same... just throwing ideas around for a "single sprue for both sides" kind of thing... don't think Napoleonic's could work at this scale... I have Perry's Travel Battle and those mini's are small enough to get away with any paint job to represent different factions (done mine as Austrian's and French) but larger scales would be too different... i'll admit the War of Spanish Succession isn't a popular period, but its colourful and lots of troops wearing virtually the same uniform, even Regiments on opposing sides wearing similar coloured clothing fighting one another... but alas lets see how this ACW goes first yeah :)

I wonder if the individual infantry stand will use 5 or 10 figures, as there seem to be photos showing both. If stands were 10 wide, how would you handle columns and formation changes? But let's be clear, this could be a real game changer in the hobby - making decent figures affordable again. It could also be a godsend for some producers given the growing reality that constant improvements in home printers will eventually also be another reality in the hobby. Finally, as others have noted, it does take me back to the 60s and affordable plastics from Airfix.

Infantry regiments are formed up as 5 bases of two strips, each strip with 10 men. The other variations, the zouaves, the skirmishers, and the like, are all in resin. Your unit columns will simply be 1 base wide and 5 deep. I'd not be surprised, at all, to see historical individuals sold as metals, such as Longstreet, Jackson, and the like.

Very strange that no one complains about the inaccuracies of these models : rebels all wearing sack-coats? Cannons wheels with 8 spokes instead of 14? Artillery men with cartridges box belts? Etc, etc..

The product looks very interesting. I like the ten figure close order strips. One thing I don't understand is the epic scale unit size. I have heard some discussion on other sites that one of the advantages of the small scale is that it allows people to play on smaller tables. Yet, it appears the average regiment is five bases with a 60mm frontage (per base). This is a 300mm unit frontage in line, which is larger than the standard 200-250mm frontage of 28mm units. In essence, the new scale either requires a larger table or less units (if using Black Powder rules). If I am correct about the unit size, it seems to me a three base unit (regiment) would have made more sense, allowing people to play on smaller tables.

Great new product and an interesting video. Always good to see the ideas and how they come to fruition. I have a lot of 15mm ACW, but I can see how this new initiative could work well for Warlord. Very easy to paint (in rows, so no fiddly individual models), they look effective on the table and the detail is excellent. Lots of Warlord customers come into the hobby from a GW background so this will possibly be their first experience of anything smaller than 28mm. I can see how some older hobbyists would consider ACW a 'saturated' market, but how many newer, less experienced customers would consider making the jump from Bolt Action to buying Essex 15mm ACW for instance? I'd say this is a pretty good move both for the hobby (and attracting new players to different scales) and for Warlord as a business.

I typed this out so you don't have too. The original idea was based on the old ads at the back of comic books in the 60's for 1000's of ACW troops in a foot locker. They did this scale to fit lots of troops on one frame, uniforms on both sides are the same, you can fit a lot on one frame. Special figures like Zouvers, Iron Brigade, Horse handlers and wagons will be in resin. Iron Brigade is coming. Cavalry will be armed with Sabre/Revolver/carbine. A Napoleonic version would be great but one game at a time. The rules in the box is a stripped down Black Powder book with extra rules from Glory Hallelujah (not including the background and scenario's).

Good luck to Warlord with this venture. Ok it may not suit everyone, but I feel they are to be congratulated on another contribution to the hobby. They could just rest on their laurels,but that's not their style. It's this sort of idea that jeeps the hobby alive. We should also not forget that this represents a significant commercial risk for the company too. All the best to all at Warlord for this and the New Year.

Always a pleasure to hear John Stallard wax lyrical. (Bet he remembers American Civil War 'chewing gum' cards too. Gosh, they were 'R Rated', harrowing stuff!) With regard to the new venture, well, in terms of detail, these are as good or better than early 15mm stuff like Peter Laing et al. The grouped plastic castings are crisp enough to display facial hair, belts, equipment and even metal furniture on the muskets. Crucially, they look fairly easy to paint. ACW is a good choice as, as John points out, the difference between Johnny Reb and Billy Yank is largely one of colour schemes. Obviously, ACW as a historical gamed period is up there with Napoleonics and is bound to be popular with the massive American market. Funny that so many people are asking about similar 'epic' projects in Napoleonic, Ancient, AWI and ECW periods! (The snag there is that 'generic' figures in those periods don't really apply in the main, opposing armies looking quite dissimilar, English Civil War/TYW being a notable (possible???) exception. However, ECW doesn't quite have the mass appeal that other periods do, so, despite being ideally suited to a similar approach as these new ACW creations, one wonders if sales would reward the considerable outlay?) All that said, the huge success of Flames Of War (albeit in the hugely popular WWII period) has proved that the market is quite prepared to accept and embrace a comparatively new product/scale/system if the quality of miniatures/support/backup allows the gamer to expand and further explore the system. I rather think that this latest venture by Warlord Games will prove quite a success. In terms of pricedetail, I think they've struck a perfect balance. xx SF

Can you please explain to us all why wave two and particularly wave three releases for this game are so expensive? The skirmishes are the same price as a comparable box of twenty eight mil figures from Perry. I bought all my cavalry,skirmishes ,zouaves and limbers from Kallistra for far less than your models so that I could fully enjoy this game.

Thanks John, one question, if 5 bases of the Epic system make a regiment, doesn't that give the unit a wider footprint than the 240mm of a standard 28mm regiment? i.e. is this still big table gaming? The painted units look lovely.

If each side uses the same sized bases, or close enough, variances in figure heights matter less to playing a game. Of course, 28mm vs 6mm on similar bases would look awful, but in the 12mm to15mm-ish sizes, they'd not look all that bad. I've played in plenty of large games, upwards of 4000 miniatures on the table, from various manufacturers, and none of us who were playing had a care about it.

There’s no such thing as 15mm, it’s a myth. Essex, AB, Old glory, Bluemoon, etc, all are different in height and style and don’t work well together.

@@richardbradley2335 blue moon are 15/18mm, they are technically true 15mm as they are 15mm to the eyes. AB are about the same height so I included them, but are sold as 18mm. It’s mainly because they are on the large size of the 15mm market which tends towards 13-14 mm to the eyes. I’d rather they did the larger side too though, particularly for the more detailed periods of history (ie. everything before it). I don’t own ACW yet, so I can buy afresh with out worrying about scale creep, zoaves aren’t exactly detailed either and they are the most colourful troops of the period so painting should be fairly straight forward. It is more of an issue for Napoleonics for me, as I have mainly bluemoon and a few regiments of AB. My essex never saw light of day as they are tiny beside the BM and AB. Ultimately if it’s mainly plastic ACW then I’m happy and willing to accept the smaller size.

I applaud the price point and accessibility of the range, but why oh why go for such a restrictive scale? I get you want to ‘own’ a scale but surely you could have accommodated established ACW gamers with a scale that fits better with other ranges. You say that there are lots of scale variations out there and that’s true, but these are so much smaller that 15mm they look stupid together. Also you have limited anyone wanting to play other rules other than Black Powder. Seems a poor business decision to limit your target audience so much

Sorry if criticism affects your sensibilities but it remains a free world to comment how we like, and of course choose to buy or not buy. Perry 25mm largely fit other ranges, not an issue, kallistra.... well that’s a niche company not like Warlord.

@@jasontemple6140 So looking at that sprue I can see no reason why it could not have been made in 15mm scale. This appears to be a way to lock players in to this, and only this, range of models. Very much a GW mentality, and not something that some will find welcome in historical gaming. At the moment I see Warlord pumping out a lot of stuff in the hopes that some of it will stick, and the rest will just wither on the vine. Much like GW.

He also said that they gave a lot of thought and engineering into fitting the figures on the sprue frame. This dovetails with John's desire for a mass of troops as per his childhood vision. So, while you may not be satisfied with his answers, he did answer the question.

I've no problem with Mr Stollard? personally and I think the set's great. If I wasn't already committed to 20mm I'd be all over it. But he didn't definitively say why they chose this size of figure.
