Q on TNG: recurring menace who toys with the crew and has morale repartee with Picard. Q on DS9: shows up once, gets punched in face by Sisko, never appeared again Q on VOY: caring and considerate, on friendly terms with Janeway.

@@DefSquadFan Why? Picard refused to be civil with Q, which usually is what drove Q (at least after their first encounter) to screw with them. Janeway didn't tolerate Q easily at first, but she was far more civil towards him than Picard, and he responded in kind. If Picard had acted better towards Q, Q would have acted better towards him. Almost everything Q did towards Picard, even including the first episode, ended up helping Picard and the crew in some way... they just hated to acknowledge it.

Q on Lower decks: He wished to test the captain in a similar way to Picard but was far more of a dick about it in the short scene we see. He then tries to do the same to Mariner who shoots him down. Responding with basically “Oh come on pal Picard is so boring now that he’s retired.” I love how differently he reacts to every character he meets.

I honestly love this dynamic. Picard always saw Q as nothing more than a nuisance, he never could see the humour in his antics. But Janeway can see him as a friend, she can get along with him and can actually see some of the fun that he sees. It's a really sweet thing.

Doesn't Janeway mention the first time she meets Q that the Federation basically had Picard's interactions with him documented, so that other captains could interact with him in a way that doesn't end with the captain, ship, and/or crew receiving the same treatment that Picard got?

I always wondered if Q giving Janeway the PADD was not just him being kind by shaving a few years off their journey but making sure Voyager actually had a chance of getting home. Who knows, the route they were taking could have lead to another 'Year of Hell' or any other possible numbers of phenomena ending with Voyagers destruction.

I have always believed he WAS sending them home. He just made them do the work. He sent them on the path of the Transwarp Hub. To him time is nothing, so he could see that Janeway would go back in time to make sure they could get home. It's very possible they wouldn't have been near it if it wasn't for him. It's not a coincidence it's so close to the end of the series.

@@wiiviewer Oooh nice catch! He practically did send them all the way home since they're only half a year out, except for needing to go through like 10 more monsters of the week and then a major confrontation with the Borg. When I saw the video title (never watched Voyager in full) I assumed knowing Star Trek it would involve him *offering* to send them all the way and Janeway finding some bizarre excuse to refuse and doom her crew to decades longer in the Delta Quadrant, just so the show wouldn't end. It's nice to see that they found a way that allowed him to actually send them home but at the same time made the ending feel earned.

It's not canon but there's a book in which it's heavily implied that during Q's participation in a rebellion against the Continuum he deflected a meteor thrown at him into the Earth... the one that killed the dinosaurs. One of Q's punishments upon surrendering and re-entering the continuum is that he was tasked in safeguarding the lifeforms of that planet, rather than just undoing his actions, as a reminder of the horrors and devastation that can be inflicted upon other beings through nothing more than a Q's carelessness. This is why (among other things) Q warns Picard about the Borg, because they are an existential threat to the Federation and Earth in particular (as evidenced by the First Contact movie).

@DoremiFasolatido1979 6 ай бұрын
Yeah...he's only great BECAUSE of Picard not getting along with him. Though...they did mostly sort that out across the franchise in an "Odd Couple" kind of way. Picard is the one who taught Q mostly not to be a dick. He was always the rebel of the Continuum. Where they were dicks, but reserved and uptight about it...he was always out looking to have a good time "fulfilling his obligations" to the universe. And he caused a shitload of havoc because of it. Picard slowly broke him of that, got him to actually understand what he was doing, eventually. Then he encountered Sisko and realized how boring and pointless it all was to be the "imp" again, and moved on with his existence. Pretty much all Sisko had going for him...he managed to finally bore a Q. Q thought Sisko being stupid enough to punch him would mean more fun manipulating him. But the reality is, messing with someone that's easy to trigger isn't fun at all. Low-hanging fruit. So by the time he got to Janeway, he was largely a decent guy. Bit of a pain in the ass, but not malicious or cruel, or spiteful (mostly). Janeway got it easy with him. I'm sure she'd have been just as frustrated if she'd had to deal with him at the beginning.

@@The_Gallowglass I see Q more as a parental unit illustrating to their 13 year-old why they don't know as much as they think they do when he sent them to delta quadrant and then encountered the Borg. Picard was full of hubris, even if he didn't boast about it publicly, prior to that episode. By the end of the episode just prior to Q saving them from complete destruction/assimilation did Picard finally admit he/The Federation wasn't The Sh*t and that there were unexplored/unknown dangers that could break them in a mere instant if they weren't careful. I think Picard saw Q as reckless for putting his ship/crew in such danger "on a whim" at that time, so future encounters between the two gradually toned down from downright combative, to irritation, nuisance, then somewhat bothersome depending upon captain's mood and Q's level of sarcasm that day. Q did respect Picard for sure, but he knew there was damage done at the beginning of their relationship that would make it very difficult for something remotely close to a Janeway relationship. But, Janeway wasn't nearly as tight personality wise as Picard and her ability to give sh*t back as much or more than receiving it was more amenable to Q's personality, which definitely helps with the relationship.

In one of the books that Q is in, he mentions why he didn't send Voyager back home to Earth despite appearing on the ship several times (in one case they even saved his life and he STILL didn't do it). It was because without Voyager "distracting" the Borg & Species 8472 in the Delta Quadrant, the Borg would've launched an assault on Earth the likes of which the Federation has never seen. I do believe in 1 episode, the Borg were planning to use some sort-of "assimilation virus" on Earth's population. Janeway stopped it. In another episode, Species 8472 was planning to infiltrate Starfleet Headquarters. Janeway stopped it. So basically, Q purposely kept them there to stop these threats to the Federation because Starfleet would have no knowledge of them considering they're coming from the other side of the galaxy. As far as him handing her the PADD, yes, he indirectly put the ship on a direct course to one of the Borg transwarp hubs knowing full-well Admiral Janeway from the future was going to give them the assist to get home AND provide Starfleet with future technology to defend itself against the Borg. Remember.....Picard himself even said that Q "seems to have a curiosity in humanity" and has "more than just a passing interest in what happens to us." Not all of it is parlor tricks and "tests."

Yes he did. Of course noone remembers it. You see after that incident, he set things up so that eventually Picard would run into a quantum singularity that would swallow the whole of the galaxy. Of course being so throughly out of his mind by then he only made things worse. He shot the engineer who was trying to cancel the effect thinking they were a cardassian agent, and hit the panel making the calculations. Of course it exploded, fusing circuits and causing the wrong equations to be sent. The main deflector l sent out an inverse axion pulse straight at the heart of the phenomenon, causing it to swallow all of reality and resetting time and space to where they should have been. The Prime Timeline. All of the Kelvin nonsense ceased to be. Q looked at this, with a satisfied smirk of amusement. His son has grown indeed.

An expanded version of this episode should have been the finale, with Q Junior sending Voyager back home with a snap of the finger at the end. Imagine, Q Junior whispers something in his father's ear and the older Q replies "Now son, what have we learned about setting off chains of events with cosmic impact?" followed by a brief pause, a wry smile and "...but I suppose we can make an exception for Aunt Kathy....just this once."

That's just wishful thinking by fans. The finale was a mess and put together in haste based on the competing wishes of several different people in the production. It's very unlikely when they wrote this episode the finale had been written, or even the plot they went with storyboarded. The line about Q saying "what kind of example would I be setting?" was just a lazy plot device to explain why the series didn't end right there and then - even though it would almost certainly have been a better ending than what they actually shipped out.

I cant speak of his appearance(s?) on DS9, but I felt Q always returned some of the emotions the captains showed him: Picard was distant, cold, confident bordering on arrogant, and often impatient. Q in return mirrored those emotions. Janeway however is far more patient, understanding, and not as confident as Picard is due to her situation. Q in a way mirrors those emotions too (as far as a Q can I suppose). His character made both shows worth watching, and they used him as sparingly as they should have at moments that mattered.

This is one of those ideas that sound good at first, but really aren't. You either end up with no serious threats and a boring show, or a show that constantly has to introduce ridiculously strong adversaries, thus burning out very quickly. Alternatively, you place so many restrictions on the Q character that it defeats the original idea. Using the Q sparsely as they did, and never as part of the crew, was done for a reason and it was the right thing to do. The only viable option is to have a "fallen Q" that has been forever banished by the continuum and slowly learns to adjust to mortal life throughout the show. Even then, you'd still have to make that character distinct from John de Lancie's Q as well as characters with similar arcs like Odo, Seven of Nine, Data, the EMH, and so on.
