27:06 Genius advice. If your songwriting is strong it can weather any performance. Randy is a monster guitar player, camouflaged in every song. You don't notice him like other guitar heroes because he never showboated, his parts were always supporting the song. He and Cummings have a huge influence on my songwriting. Thanks for the clip!

I came to the DC area in 1998,, ;due to military orders, and not sure what year it was as I’m still here. I heard on the radio BTO was playing in DC. Didn’t know where I was going, but found them playing on a truck bed in the street. What a show, I’ll never forget it. So when it said that Randy gives all, well any band that plays off a truck bed and you find it as good a show as the DC arena pays tribute to a real musician and showman. Thanks for all the great songs, and forever sown into my fabrics of life! Bravo!

We loved the great songs that Randy was involved in, in the late 60's/70's and think that Bachman's guitar riffs had a great deal to do with the songs and their great success. They were pretty sophisticated for the time in rock and stood out. Looks like he learned the guitar through a (paint-by-number) book or two and doesn't mention even having had a teacher(?). There is still hope for the rest of us.

What an excellent interview! BTO was such a great band, with many hits in the 1970s But IMO the best BTO album was their first one. The jazzy Blue Collar and hard rocking Gimmie Your Money Please are great tunes. I looked for the CD for many years, but it was always out of print. Then one day back in 2000 I stopped at a little mini mart and there in a small CD display on the counter, there it was!

I too started here in Edmonton on a Sears and Roebuck sold Silvertone . Kinda looked like an oversized strat. I always had the idea that the "get-on" to the main riff in Cream's "I Feel Free" was the inspiration for the main riff to "American Woman". Nice to have Mr. Bachman confirm it himself. Randy's a great songwriter and player, thanks for sharing this.
@dgrantgibson6 жыл бұрын
I saw The Guess Who in Edmonton, Alberta in the early 70's at the Edmonton Gardens. They did a 20+ minute version of American Women that still reverberates today with that guitar riff. Years later I saw Burton Cummings in Dawson Creek, BC as a solo act. Amazing Canadian talent. I live in Vancouver area, not far from where Randy lives on Salt Spring Island. He is spot on when he says many of the song writers with great lyrics did not have a great voice. The audience wants to hear the words to the song more than the strength of the singers voice. A true Canadian craftsman.

It’s funny thatI just ran across your site. The last few years I have really been admiring your solos with BTO and also the Bachman and Turner reunion album. Been a fan for years but listening as a frustrated guitar player. I like that your solos are tasteful, they fit the song, they seem somewhat unpredictable, and also you don’t overplay. In my mind your one of my favorite twenty guitar players. At first it was the heavy riffs but lately I have been enjoying the solo. And yes - the Beatles still rock.
