There are over 17,500 islands in the Indonesian archipelago but in the 21st century only the island of Bali continues to have kings.
Bali comprises 8 regencies that correspond to the old Balinese kingdoms, the 9th kingdom of Mengwi existed till the end of the 19th century when it was divided between the neighboring kingdoms of Tabanan and Badung.
Each regency has a king or raja, larger provinces within the regency have a king, and each village has its own king. For example, the regency of Gianyar has a king, the province of Ubud has a king, and the village of Manuaba has a king, named Anak Agung Gde Raka.
The people of Manuaba usually address him as Gung Lingsir, the oldest one. The king resides in a palace or puri in Manuaba and it is within the grounds of his palace that he granted us an audience, allowing us to ask him about his vision for the future of Manuaba.
As one of the local and royal family members I welcome changes to Manuaba but I hope that we will not forget our traditional customs inherited from long ago.
The King goes on to say he hopes that advancement and development in their village should not change or damage what exists now in their society.
Their traditions as worshippers of the gods, 'melasti', and worshippers of the Barong need to stay everlasting as these are the beliefs they have held for hundreds of years, and any changes should only be to improve them for the better.
