I like the design, but they fell down on one key aesthetic. While it's true the Gen 4 comes in three colors (silver, rose gold, and black), it appears that the color is only along a thin edge around the unit. The "stem" (between the display and the base) is white (although it may be black if the black color is chosen based on another video I saw). So while the color looks good from the front, the white "stem" detracts from the appearance when viewed from the side.

“Definitely a needed upgrade” that’s an odd thing to say. A lot of thermostats aren’t replaced for 20-30 years because they work absolutely fine

@AdamJohnson0110Ай бұрын
Unfortunately as people need AC upgrades, they'll be more likely to get multi or completely variable speed compressor and fan systems which require communicating thermostats. Nest isn't compatible with those systems' capabilities other than being able to control off/on. My Trane system has a communicating handler, so I had to set dip switches on the handler system to do the fan ramp-up/ramp-down as opposed to just the full off/on speed that Nest will control. It doesn't have the capability to do fully variable compressor control, so if you need a system that does that, you're stuck with the Honeywell or brand-provided tstat that comes recommended by the manufacturer.

It is so EASY to install US thermostats. Here in the UK - you need an extra box to connect to the boiler as well and the wiring is more complicated.

Hi I have the third generation, do you know if I can use the third generation Heat Link?
@michailangelopoulos5602Ай бұрын
No. This is designed for US HVAC installations that use 24V. European heating systems use 230VAC. As a result you need the Heat Link to do the switching. In the EU versions you just need a 2 wire cable from the heatlink to the thermostat for 12VDC power and optional wired comms. An EU model will surely follow, including a Heat Link type box, Opentherm support and hot water control. They could theoretically maintain the same Thread communication (wired and wireless) to the Heat Link, allowing you to replace only the thermostat head, but knowing Google, they will probably push a "new and improved" Heat Link that does the same as the old one, being more expensive, more shiny and stealing your data...

This looks very unappealing, like some kind of weird mushroom, for no practical reason other than "it just looks different". The previous gen 3 Nest looked more elegant. The UI's text also looks small on this new 4th gen version, with some UI elements combined in an unintuitive way. Thanks for saving me money, I'll keep on using 3rd gen Nest thermostats for as long as they'll work and if they'll stop working - I'll probably just go with some non-Google thermostat instead.

I’ve pretty basic ecobee 3s in my house and I pretty much never set the temperature from the device itself, so it isn’t really important how the onscreen controls work. So the main job of these things are to display data and look good. The Nest being reviewed here is certainly pretty. If you keep changing your thermostat you are never going to break even on energy savings.
@saltbae66188 күн бұрын
No need to replace your 2nd gen nest thermostat if it still works... This is clearly a paid video by Nest... Fancy stuff but useless... People use thermostat just to keep the space at the desired temp, that's it...
