Zeus' horns are in reference to his symbolic connection to bulls (bulls and eagels being beasts associated with him). Jewish figures being depicted with horns, however, is... a translation error, which has persisted to this day as some people genuinely believe that Jews have horns.

Another Polites jump scare! Fun fact! Calypso doesn't realise it, but she triggers him like... three times. The open arms is the most obvious, but she also echos Eurylocus by calling him "Ody," and his mother by telling him that he'll always be in his heart. Further context. In the original Odyssey, their relationship is inherently sexual - non-consensual at that. Calypso wants Odysseus to be her husband and refuses to accept "No" for an answer, though she never succeeded. In EPIC, it's a bit different. There's no confirmation that she was anything but pushy and persistent in trying to be in a relationship with him. However, there's the added element that Calypso is also a prisoner on that island who has been stuck there for a *very* long time in total isolation (which explains why she latched onto Odysseus: he was the first and only person she had seen in centuries).
@kittycatzuka7 сағат бұрын
Yep, she assaults him every night, and he spends the daytime crying on the beach. Some later myths also have Calypso and Odysseus have twin sons as a result, Nausithous and Nausinous. But after Ody leaves the island, Calypso turns the boys into stone because she can't bring herself to love them anymore.
@advenaphillips88726 сағат бұрын
One later myth has them as the children of Calypso. Another has Latinus, but, as far as the Odyssey is concerned, no children were born of their union. Much preferred the later traditions which had Calypso kill herself or at least spend her eternity alone sobbing on the beach. I mean, in EPIC goddesses cannot die - how do you think she found that out, while being abandoned on an island since she was young?

The gods of the greek pantheon were never meant to be models of virtue. They were refelections of what was true and observed in others. So the gods can be (and often were) greedy, selfish, prideful, and arrogant. We assume they were paragons simply because of a pop culture understanding of christianity that says god = good guy.
@QofyReacts17 сағат бұрын
Yeah Its interesting how modern culture associate the term God with Good. Its never been the understanding of the cultures which formed these ideas. Even followers of Yahweh, a god among the pantheon Gods of El-Elion in Canaanite History, had the understanding that their patron God, Yahweh had the ability to be cruel sometimes and feared him cus of it. But now we have sweet baby Jesus so God = Good guy 😂

@icemagiciangh5 сағат бұрын
Your reaction to Calypso… yeah. Seven years of her pushing him to be with her on _her island._ A goddess pushing him, no less. His final call, Odysseus’ Hail Mary is to a once friend he had a massive falling out with ten years ago. He didn’t even know if she’d answer because of that. It was a pure scream of desperation, or he’d jump. With Calypso saying back everything his dead loved ones have said- “open arms”, “I’ll stay in your heart”, and it being established earlier that he talks in his sleep, there is a fan theory that he had said those things while unconscious, and that she was using all of that to get him away from the edge. That song is absolute pain.

Athena’s redemption arc is everything I wanted since My Goodbye. I didn’t think we’d get it, but we did, and I cannot express how happy that made me. Also, that was Telemachus she was holding. She was with Odysseus and Warrior of the Mind was playing. As soon as she held Telemachus, the tune changed to Legendary. She remembered who she was fighting for. It’s so cute. I’m also excited that you watched the version I recommend! One thing I deeply appreciate that Anni put into her animatic is Hephaestus lacking a leg. Even in mythology, he’s disabled and I adore getting to see it. We love representation 🧡 Also, I don’t know if you noticed, but as she was fighting her way to Zeus _he melted away her shield._ That’s how extra pissed he was at her using his infidelity to win Hera’s vote (“You dare to make me feel shame?!” that’s what he meant).

What’s fun about god games is that the gods she needs to convince were all on the Trojan side of the war-even Zeus. This is the same war Odysseus just fought in. Now, about Apollo and his connection to the sun: I have both a technical and a historical answer. Technical Answer: Helios is the physical embodiment of the sun-a Titan who sided with Zeus. Zeus’s son Apollo guides Helios across the sky in his chariot. Historical Answer: Religions change over time, and historians studying ancient Greek religion noted that Apollo’s name doesn’t appear in the Mycenaean Greek language. This suggests that he was most likely an imported god who became popular in Greece. His cult grew, and he began to gain more domains and influence. When the Romans conquered Greece, they adopted Apollo into their pantheon. This process is called syncretism. It describes what happens when multiple religions coexist in the same region, merging aspects of each. Over time, people worshiped gods from different pantheons, and sometimes these gods even blended into hybrid deities. This is what happened with Apollo and Helios, eventually synchronizing their identities and later in the roman era he would further sychronize with Sol invictus.

@@felixhenson9926I mean he is A sun god, just not THE sun god.
@wideputinjr865613 сағат бұрын
One thing I find really interesting about the Romans adopting Greek mythology is that they didn’t like Odysseus because of his tricks instead of facing things head on. They pretty much had Ares view in this song (along with other things) and that’s why the Romans liked Ares a lot more than Athena since Ares has a more forward approach compared to Athena who is the god of wisdom and strategy.
@kennylam989512 сағат бұрын
@@Kirachan3 @felixhenson9926 I think this is more of a timeline question. Since Apollo was a relatively late addition to the Greek pantheon, Apollo and Helios were distinct gods at first, as we see in the Iliad and Odyssey, where both are mentioned separately. However, by the time of the Romans, Apollo had become established as the sun god. You can see this in Cicero’s Nature of the Gods from 45 BCE. So, eventually, Apollo takes on the sun god role, but the key question here isn’t really about his domain-it’s about the specific time period we're talking about.

The cool thing with the hellenic pantheon is that many gods share domains, and the sun is one of them that has many gods beyond Helios and Apollo(n). And I love the sketch someone did of the obvious that Telemachus as Prince has the right to throw people out for breaking Xenia, hospitality for the guest/stranger Edit: Greek men were famous for being unfaithful to their wives, and the animals we see them turn into (the owl and snake for Athena, and the eagle and bull for Zeus) are their sacred animals they were worshipped with. Zeus and Hera having horns is just a callback to their most identified mammal being the bull/cow

41:05 ok, its a little complicated. There are 12 olympians: Zeus, Hera, Demeter, Poseidon, Hestia, Athena, Ares, Hermes, Apollo, Artemis, Hepheastus, Aphrodite/ the first 5 + Hades are siblings But there are other gods on olympus(but are not olympian gods): Hebe, Herakles, Psyce, Eros, Iris, Morpheus, Phanasus, Phobetor, Eras, Phobos, Deimos, the Muses, the Fates(sometimes), and some others Then there are Hades and Persephone(rulers of the underworld)or Thanatos god of death, and a lot more minor gods(gods of the sea(Triton)/of lakes/of rivers/of mountains/and nature spirits which are sometimes also gods) Also the primorial gods(Gaia, Nyx, Uranus, Pontus,...) and Titans(Chronus, Selene, Helios, Prometeus, Atlas,...) PS: some gods like Artemis and Apollo take over the "job" of other gods like Selene and Helios as god of the moon and sun/take the place of a different god like Hestia being replaced by Dionysus as the 12th olympian

The reason that The Suitors dont just seize the throne is because Penelope is still the queen, and they are in her house so they have to abide by the laws of hospitality, which were a huge deal Mycanean Greece, basically they couldnt do anything directly to Penelope for fear of her kicking them out (she *is* still the queen and they still *are* loyal citizens of Ithica) and they also dont want to start a civil war for fear of the other citizens of Ithica. There is only 108 of them and enough other Ithicans for a 600 men army to be not devastating to the island. In Love in Paradise the beginning is not an outside source looking on and judging Odyssesus' actions, though i love that thought, its Athena looking back at what shes missed while she wasnt paying attention to Ody. Also when you say the 'god heads' i think youre referring to the *big 6* children of Kronos, Hestia Hades Demeter Posideon Hera and Zeus. Also many others have pointed out the difference of Apollo and Helios, so i wont say it again but yeah Apollo is a god and Helios is a titan with Apollo not being the god of the sun till the Romans basically rebranded and recreated him.
@felixhenson992617 сағат бұрын
The figure you thought was 'Judgement' was just Athena. The 'god head' is just Zeus. Helios wasn't present at God Games. Do you maybe mean the Olympians by god head? Apollo became a god of light later on when there was more Roman influence, music, archery and prophecy are his primary domains. Helios is the sun god. Hephaestus is the god of the forge, he's Vulcan in Roman mythology. He did like inventing things hence the robot i think. Also Hera was the wife of Zeus, serial rapist and constant cheater and also the goddess of marriage and the family. So yeah, that's why that argument landed lol. Also the flashback when Athena was being attacked by Zeus was Athena being introduced to Telemachus by Odysseus. You can hear the melody change from the Warrior of the Mind one to Legendary

Friend your reactions always bring a smile to my face. I love watching you enjoy something I hold so dear. The end of Love in Paradise never fails to get me to tear up, the raw anguish and despair gets me everytime. God Games is a whole beast, I love both the animatics that you chose to react to. Love LOVE the depiction of Ares in Neil's, how he fights WITH Aphrodite and how we can see his and Athena's sibling energy. The ending in both where Zeus seems to understand he overreacted and Athena pleads as his daughter is sooo good. Athena is his favourite daughter, some suggest she only had to convince him (which he mentions in the initial statement for the "game" - "or Me"). For musical trivia tidbits, in We'll be Fine, Athena keeps repeating Odysseus' runs from the chorus of Warrior of the Mind (which she had stop doing since My Goodbye, which also shows us, beyond her words, how she changed her mind since the Cyclops saga), and you see Telemachus using them as he sings in that song, like father like son.

Athena was like, Just met the Grandkid time to check out how my son is doing, meanwhile Ody about to have a mental breakdown, and then she is like, He needs me also no Apollo is not the sun god, thats Helios, who had the cows, he would have been in the song if he still had a grievance with Odyssius, but since Zeus already had punished Ody, he is chill now, also Poseidon don't appear cause he didn't file a complaint with Zeus, so he is not needed to let Ody leave

Basic Epic timeline, Ody went to war for 10 years, then various awfulness for 3 years then stuck on the island with Kalypso for 7 years, total of 20 to this point in the musical. Love in Paradise is a flashback created by Athena to see what happened to Ody.

I would 100% look at the livestream animatics on Jorge's channel on the livestreams. They're more closely worked through with hum personally and are much more true to his vision of events. They aren't straight through animatics like these usually, but are canon to the story so it's easier to see what Jorge envisioned. ALSO!! I AM SO HAPPY ACTUALLY YOU WATCHED GOD GAMES TWICE, SPECIFICALLY FOR THE "IF HES WORTH THE RISK OF GOING UNDER" LINE. Most people assume Zeus kinda just lost his temper bc Athena humiliated him by winning. I've had this theory that he planned to "kill" her all along as part of his own "test", considering he names himself as one of the gods she has to convince. As much as it would be in character for Zeus to just lose it when she wins, that line really seems to indicate that intention. Also you did pick the two best god games animatics 🥰 I personally am part of the minority (?) who prefers Anniflamma's, simply because the ENDING is so much better emotionally and also logistically (Neal's depiction of the fights against the other gods is absolutely amazing, but his final fight against Zeus is slightly confusing imo, I couldn't really tell what exactly is happening in a lot of the frames.) Anniflamma sticks really close to the canon visuals which for this part are simply incredible. One can really see the power difference between Athena and Zeus much clearer and her hanging on his arm at the end for some reason hits even harder than the hug. Either way yeah uh, no one really knows where Athena is now or when/if she will reappear. Which is fun... No one tell odysseus that the one confidant who hadn't died on his watch yet also died(?) now because he called out to her and she saved him...

Helios was in this previously (in Mutiny), I believe Helios was still considered the god of the sun at this time, but he's more of a titan than an Olympian I think? As in, he essentially *is* the sun. But Apollo, while sun adjacent at this point in mythology, is more primarily music

To help you on the matter of what gods are of what, here comes what i humbly known: The olympians are 12, at times 13. They are: Zeus (god of judgement, the sky, lightning and the heavens) Poseidon (god of ocean, earthquakes, horses and storms) Hades (god of dead, riches under the soil and underworld) Hera (goddess of Family, fertility, loyalty and tradition I think) Athena (goddess of Wisdom and Battle Strategy) Hermes (god of thieves, travelers, messangers and cunning/mischievousness) Hephaestus (god of fire and forges, made Zeus' bolt) Apollo (god of the sun, medicine, archery, poetry & music, and prophecy) Arthemis (goddess of the moon and hunt, twin to apollo) Ares (god of war and bloodshed) Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) Dionisius (god of wine, madness and religius fervor) And, at times either part of them or formerly: Hestia (goddess of home, hearth, and hospitality)
