Hi Paul. I love this video and having a system to know which verbs use which prepositions. One question. In the sentence, “Juan se dedica a enseñar a niños a tocar el piano,” isn’t a “les” (enseñarles”) needed as “niños” is the indirect object. Juan is teaching “to play the piano” to the niños. I really appreciate your videos. They are very well thought out, concise and useful. Jim
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Niños is the indirect object but the redundant LES is not needed here. It might help to put the phrase "se dedica a enseñar" in quotes in Google so you can see examples from Spanish speaking sites. I took the liberty of doing it for you. Check it out: tinyurl.com/yc384fnc

Paul, Thank you. I did and understand it better. I learned Spanish back in 1970, and somewhere I remember the indirect object always needs the redundant “le.” However, I see now that is not the case. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Hi Paul, just in case you are interested. In spanish "Venir a infinitive" has got another meaning apart from the literal one (movement sense). With verbs such as "decir", "sugerir", "dejar caer" (hint) it is ambiguous semantically . Take this sentence for example "Vino a decirme que estaba interesado en la compra". Without a context it can mean two things: 1) He came to tell me he was interested in the purchase. 2) Subtext (Although he did not say it explicitly) I understood he was interested in the purchase. 1st rate lessons! Keep up the good work!

Hola Paul, Tengo una pregunta. De vez en cuando escucho el uso de la preposición “a” usado asi en esta frase: “Le voy a comprar un carro a mi novia” Español no es mi primer idioma y esta construcción me suena raro. Could you explain why “a” is used instead of “para” here? Thanks! I love your videos, I am really learning a lot.
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 11 ай бұрын
"Le voy a comprar un carro a mi novia” can be a confusing construction because it can have two meanings: I'm going to buy my girlfriend a car. I'm going to buy a car from my girlfriend. To be clearer, you can say: Voy a comprar un carro para mi novia. In Spanish, the LE normally means "to someone, something" but sometimes it can mean from, like in that second example. But that wasn't your question. The reason it is A mi novia is because she is affected by buying the car. It is like a gift that you give TO someone. This video may clear it up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZTWgWawfddpr5I

Hi, thanks for another great lesson. I'm not clear about the verb 'atender' ....does it get paired with the preposition 'a'? I tried putting a few examples into DeepL. Some of the examples used 'a', and some didn't. Or it came back with another verb such as 'ocuparse',
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it is paired with a and sometimes it is not. When we are talking about attending to people, the "a" can be interpreted as a personal a. When attending to matters, you sometimes see the a. Personally, I don't use this for attending to things, I prefer ocuparse de.

@@josedelnegro46German mother tongue here: Whatever your mother tongue is first of all get ready to be really fluent in German for being able and getting used to reading German books. Until this point you’ll be forced to do it in latin letters as already by order of 1941 the use of old German script (Sütterlinschrift, Kurrentschrift) had been changed to latin. Therefore there’s nothing available on the market anymore to learn German otherwise. After you might be lucky to find some old books printed before that date on flea markets in Germany to read. The German population born after WW II wouldn’t be able to read (not to speak of writing!) those books anymore. Myself still had the opportunity to learn the old German script voluntarily at school in the mid sixties growing up with old books available at home to practice reading. I chose to learn for being able to read my heritage like old family letters and books. Don’t know what’s on your mind now 🤷‍♀️
