Cheers for the video - I've played some casual games with friends and only a few matches of quake live way back (2010 or so) - I realised back then that I didn't know anything about movement, although my aim was pretty decent I suppose. I checked out a few videos about strafe and circle jumping, and haven't really found anything proper, so I expect that it's just a thing that you have to feel, and a video like this will help you get started. I managed to complete the course quite quickly after watching this.

Thanks for the tutorials. I think I got the basics down really fast after watching them. I beat almost all tutorials but the very last jump on the Strafing Jumping course. I hope I can carry what I learned to Quake Champions. I wanted to get into Quake Live aswell, but the community hasn't been the best. Often kicking me just because I'm bad and there are not many servers around. RIP.

Same here. I bought this game hoping to get the same welcoming experience I got with Quake Champions only to basically get bullied off of the game for not being good enough as a literal beginner. Maybe there's a reason no one new wants to play these games.

I was able to complete all practise areas except the right path in this map. Turns out I was doing circle jumps the whole time (picked that up visually from watching Quake) but can't strafe jump.

I had a friend that did the same thing. Very weird. Most people find circle jumping much more harder than strafe jumping, I know I did. Not everyone apparently :-/

Jump whilst pressing spacebar individually and hes on max fps so chances are that you'll need to do some bigger strafes, also for me at least it helps to keep a sertain tension in the strafes this helps me keep them smoothe

+Kaasu That's totally normal. I couldn't do it for the longest time until it finally clicked and I to this day can't tell you what I'm doing differently now. It must have to do with minute changes in the angles that give you the right amount of speed. So the only advice I can give you is to continue practicing and to not give up. I was there, too!

@LephariaGaming
@LephariaGaming 9 жыл бұрын
Not as far as I know. Holding down the button to continuously jump was only introduced recently, though, so most seasoned players have just gotten used to tapping at this point. And just FYI: Most players have jump set to the right mouse button for convenience, but that's personal preference.
@kaasuthekiller

LephariaGaming It definately affects something. Just tried with tapping and with holding it down, went faster with tapping. And Well I can tap it no problem I've used to use scroll wheel to bunnyhop for years on counter-strike but on this game it's easy with just tapping space. Thanks for this guide by the way, I can now do this jump really often, not every time but often

Really nice tutorial! Can you also show how to beat opponents in duel matchs? I play Quake relatively well, my aim and reaction are both good, but the things I miss is that map control, item control and moving. Can you also make a video on how to control all the things on the map?

+Dolphin3007 The key is to get the feel of how fast to turn your mouse. Too fast and you don't get any momentum - too slow and you'll be pulled off center and end up not jumping straight. Too too slow and nothing happens. Watch the video and get a feel for how fast he turns his mouse and when he actually presses jump.

Any chance you could do one of these tutorials on usage of weapons? I always seem to be choosing the wrong weapon for the kind of situation I'm in and end up getting fragged, so a run down of the range, ammo, reach, etc and the best ways to use them would be hella useful.

I wouldn't call what you're doing circle jumping exactly because you immediately begin strafing once you leave the ground. I've always understood circle jumping to be jumping while moving your mouse smoothly right or left and pressing forward the entire time (no strafe). You accelerate at an angle roughly 45 degrees from your cross hair opposite the direction your mouse is turning. You should be able to make that bridge jump to rail just circle jumping rather than strafe jumping (it's much harder for me personally to do it this way, but it's possible).
@LephariaGaming
@LephariaGaming 9 жыл бұрын
+PseudoAccurate I'd like to see that. All pro gamers that I've seen doing that jump use the circle/strafe combination. I can't fathom how you'd get enough speed otherwise.
@PseudoAccurate

+LephariaGaming I'll see if I can hit it and post a video. I checked out another circle jumping video by Zoot and he described circle jumping exactly as you did so maybe a different term should be used - we always called it circle jumping in Quake2. I made basically the same comment to Zoot and he didn't know what I was talking about either. I figured he would know everything related to Quake and I'm really surprised it's not common knowledge. It can be really useful because it allows you to accelerate sideways so you can make jumps while aiming in a different direction - basically 45-90 degrees off the direction of the jump. I should correct myself and say that it SHOULD be possible to make that jump. I haven't done it yet, but I've only been playing Quake Live a few weeks. I can make the jump strafe jumping and I can almost make it circle jumping (as I describe it), and since I'm not that proficient at circle jumping I figure getting that close means it's possible. I'll post a vid if I do.

I should attempt to make a video on it again. If you can 180 on your mouse back and forth to center a few times your mouse is set to attempt this. Also try to mouse 360 to center. You are doing 45° turns sometimes at 22 1/2° from standing still. So if you jump in pie you will get covered in pie. Plasma pies. Something like that. Its hard to splain.

Hello. Congrats for the tutorial, it's very simple to understand. But as a QW player, I have a question. Is it possible to do "curves" while in the air in QL? In QW it's possible and vital to keep the speed. This old video shows what I'd like to do in QL: Quake 1: Guide to bunny hop
@LephariaGaming
@LephariaGaming 10 жыл бұрын
I'd say you have a lot more inertia in QL than in the video you've linked. So sharp turns like that are a bit harder to do. I normally stop and do a quick circle jump in such situations. You lose a bit of speed, but it's normally feasible enough. In general QL is a bit slower than older Quake games from what I've seen.

LephariaGaming Well, ok on second thought after playing it again it's not a HELL of a lot slower, only slightly like you said. It's actually a pretty sweet game, and does feel like it stays faithful enough to the original Quake gameplay, while updating it with certain elements. Kind of like Unreal Tournament and Quake combined.

I had played Q3 in 2000 during my studies.I had a 350MHz PC with 8MB Graphics Ram (people from germany know very well the so called ALDI PC)...I could play it only on the lowest graphic settings and thought always that this kind of jump is only possible with the right equipment...Maybe that was good at that time for me because thats maybe the reason that I could end my studies successfully :)...its funny but most of the good Quake Players which were at the same university did not made it as they have played all the nights....Just a short flashback 😁 You are explaining it very good and Im getting a nice feeling to install Q3 again on my PC after 20years :). Great Video, nice job man! Is there any possibility to capture also your mouse movements? I know we see the cross however it would be helpful to see how big and fast the mouse movements must be.

This is pretty cool... I'm trying to learn the movement in some detail here. I was wondering if you can quote any sources on why 90 degrees is the best for a circle jump? I'm looking at this (link below) and it seems to indicate much greater than that (maybe 120 degrees) is even better in the sense greater max speed but is it different for QL? www.funender.com/quake/articles/cj_theory.html In fact I'm also building a tutorial series of similar nature and I think you may have forgotten to mention a few things here explicitly: namely the initial +forwards acceleration that you are of course doing. In any case I'd love to be in touch with you to share information and whatnot.
@LephariaGaming
@LephariaGaming 10 жыл бұрын
Actually I can't. Might be that you get more speed up with another angle, I'm not 100% sure about the physics behind it. I try not to overdo the math and theory on such tutorials (even more so when they're aimed at completely new players) and focus on a more hands-on approach. I'd say if you can consistently do the bridge-to-rail jump on DM6 your Circle Jump is good enough for most purposes. But of course you can contact me, preferably via Steam (either personally or through my group steamcommunity.com/groups/lephariagaming) or via email (in my channel description)

Still feels pretty dumb that literally every jump technique in QL doesn't work unless you're holding w. Takes a lot of the skill and Quake feel out of it. In Fortress Forever however as an example, the auto bhopping is still there, but you actually DO bunnyhop the original way, rather than it being limited to just strafe jumps.
@PseudoAccurate
@PseudoAccurate 9 жыл бұрын
+Cr4z3d How does the original way work? I assume you don't literally mean "w" (ie, forward) since you can strafe or circle jump backwards (just replace "w" with "s").
@Cr4z3d
@Cr4z3d 9 жыл бұрын
+PseudoAccurate The "original way" works by STARTING with w or s, but you don't hold it down the entire time, you only use the strafe/jump keys and the mouse, basically riding the momentum of the first jump and continuing to build speed with each zig-zag motion if done correctly.

+Autistic Weeaboo Lolicon I see, the thing is I never actually played the original version of Quake 3. I'm talking about original quake/qw, in which you bhopping IS a thing. bhop originated in Quake 1, half-life came after, though hl is basically a modified version of the Quake 2 engine.

+Autistic Weeaboo Lolicon Ok, I just honestly didn't realize. What kind of dumb changes may I ask? I don't really play it much at all so. Only one I can think of is the switch to paid for new players.

@Cr4z3d 9 жыл бұрын
+Autistic Weeaboo Lolicon Ah right, I was actually around for some of those changes as I was a Steam player to begin with, lol, back when it was still free, which I think it was an extremely stupid move to switch it FROM free to paid. It's like the opposite of what happened with TF2, though ironically enough F2P was pretty much the only way I was able to play TF2 in the 1st place. I was overjoyed when I saw that news and immediately picked up Steam XD and that's where it all started...
